>>
It might as well be with as much use as it gets.
>>

Witcher does it pretty good.
Press it and the menu comes up. Press it longer and you go straight to the inventory.
Swipe upwards and you open the world map directly.
>>
>>377590709
why not just press left, right, and bottom instead of holding and swiping

it can tell where you press it and count as multiple buttons
>>
>>377590936
Get with the times anon
>>
>replaces Select, which was just a single standard button
>can be touch input, several different buttons and swipes on top of that
It's a net positive.

And I'm sure I'll get ridiculed for saying this, but I'm fairly sure it's not intended to be used by every game or be some central gimmick to sell the system on, it's just there as an optional input for developers who want to use it. It simply adds more input options for devs to work with.
>>
Kojimbo made it work pretty well, makes me think it was him that asked for it.

It's fucking annoying is what it is. Also I wish they would fuck off with the touch pad since that's the main reason why the battery life is complete horseshit
>>
>>377591320
Start was literally just renamed Options, which makes far more sense for what it actually does. The Start button was used for pausing games and bringing up options menus. Options is a far better word for it.

>Share is useless and no one uses it
I mean that's demonstrably incorrect, but even beyond that I use it constantly because I like taking screenshots. Screenshot buttons being adopted industry wide is awesome IMO, and if you don't use it yourself they should be easy to ignore.
>>
>>377591320
>I'm pretty sure no one uses it
You're pretty wrong on that account I'm sure. Just look at all the uploaded screenshots on the PSN. Plus, /v/irgins use it so they can post screenshots here.
>>
>>377591386
it presses well from bottom too

and the console can tell from where you're pressing it, so it could technically be as many buttons as you want

but most won't do more than left/right since it'd become hard to tell the boundaries, bottom/center is simple enough though
>>
>>377591431
>since that's the main reason why the battery life is complete horseshit
Isn't it more because there's a huge light in the back though ?
honestly the light is even more annoying than the touch pad, especially when you're playing in the dark, it's too bright
I wish we could turn it off
>>
>>377591546
lot of people disconnected the light completely and it didn't help the battery life in any noticeable way

that light hardly use anything at all

Ah well my bad then, truth is I don't use it at all and when they announced it it kinda felt like they cared to all the streaming and social network thing, but I guess they just adapt to the way people play

Oh yeah I even forgot START was renamed OPTIONS. It does make more sense but OPTIONS feels too... serious ? I don't know, it sounds more like a computer button, START felt like something more linked to video games
>>
>>377590669
Its an oversized button that can theoretically be used as a touchpad and allows sony to drive up the price of the controller to the consume with less backlash.

Have you heard of "HD Rumble"?
>>
>>377591735
>start
>since the beginning of consoles, it has always been used as a.. pause button
it only ever made sense on the title screen "hurr durr, insert coin to.. I mean press start to begin"
>>
I hear that it is pretty good at simulating mouse input in pc. Anyone have any experiences with that? Was thinking of buying a ds4 to use on pc.
>>
>>377591742
But the DS4 costs the exact same as the DS 3.
>>
>>377591842
I wouldn't say it's good at it compared to good touchpads, but it's still handy when you don't want to switch between mouse and controller for mudane things like a bit of menu browsing

especially nice when you're playing on the couch without a mouse anywhere near
>>
>>377591668

fuck yourself anon mhfu and p3rd was fun
>>
>>377591251
It would have had way more use as a screen. I thought it was a screen back when the DS4 was shown and I was utterly disappointed that it was a fucking touchpad.
>>
>>377591948
Great then. Was going to use it while steam home streaming on my pc. Thanks anon for confirming my need to spend 40 bucks i dont have
>>
>>377591842

It works pretty well, I bought my ds4 on its release for pc, still going strong.
I miss the touchpad as now I'm using drivers that let me connect both DS4s and DS3s at once and it doesn't support it...
>>
>>377592069
I hate screens on controllers, I never EVER fucking look at the controller, nor want to

often I even keep it under covers while playing comfy
>>
>>377592115

FYI steam has big screen so its one of the things where you don't really need the touchpad.
>>
>>377591835
No but I completely agree that it's stupid to name it START, but it feels like a video game tradition
Not that I care about traditions, ultimately I don't give a shit about the name of a button
Thing is the PlayStation controllers have pretty remained the same since the PS1, the DS4 is pretty different all of a sudden
Overall I like the DS4, my only "problem" with it is that it's way less visually pleasing than the previous DS.
But what it lost in design it gained in comfort so I don't mind

I still haven't figured it out to this day.
>>
>>377592303
>it's way less visually pleasing than the previous DS

I think it looks way better, ds3 next to it looks like some chunky russian toy.
My biggest problem with it is that I could not find sticks with the original rubber coating, the one that kept rubbing off for people, it was so good I'd rather just replace it every year, than use this current hard plastic one.
>>
Yeah but I'd rather have devs not giving a fuck about the touch features than forcing you to use them.
>>
>>377591546
The light is just an LED. It consumes virtually no power compared to the touchpad and constant bluetooth connectivity.
>>
>>377591546

I have put a silicone case on mine which lets me slide a paper between the controller and the skin that blocks the light.

And then I got the new controller which brings the light through the touchpad for some dumb god forsaken stupid reason.
Thank god you actually can turn it off on PC atleast
>>
>>377592580
? The controller that came with my console today has rubber sticks still
>>
>>377593026

Soft rubber? Does it have the light on the touchpad?
>>
>>377593064
The touchpad and light are separate, I can see the light shine through the touchpad though.
I can squish it a bit on the sides of the stick, it overall feels sticky and a bit dirty
>>
>>377593137

Huh, well lucky you. I bought a ps4 a few months ago and it came with the hard rubber with barely any grip, and the led shining through the touchpad.

The soft rubber gripped my finger perfectly, it was the best stick I ever used.
Now I bought some replacement ones and its the exact same stuff as on the new controller.
>>
>>377591431
>>377591604
Honest question. I'm new to the PS4 and so far my controller has amazing battery life. I've played pretty much every evening this week, plus yesterday almost all day and its still on one bar. And charging it is really quick as well. One hour max until I have three bars again.
So are you guys referring to the older version of the controller or whats going on?
>>
>>377593247

My controller is the new one 3 months old and I doubt it lasts 6 hours on a charge, pretty disappointing.
>>
>>377591882
On the initial purchase, yes. However the touch pad burns through the battery really quickly forcing you to constantly recharge the DS4. My DS3 lasts around a week with 12 hours of daily use while the DS4 dies after about 5-6 hours of use tops.
So its upkeep cost (variable cost) is much higher than that of the DS3. Don't fall for this stupid "it costs the same" meme. Be a smart consumer and don't let Sony fuck you in the ass.
>>
Xbox One has the best controller this gen.
>>
>>377593314
I pretty much given up on using it wireless myself, ended up buying a long silky smooth cable

it used to last about 6 hours too (which already wasn't enough) but now it's down to 3 hours
>>
>>377593608

I heard you can easily buy better batteries for it now. Though I never bothered, as you say - a cable is fine too, both at my PC and using it on my bed easily lets me use a cable as well.
>>
>>377593608
>tfw your ancient as fuck DS3 still last like 24 hours wireless with its original battery

Takes up a lot of space, costs a lot of money, cannot be charged by default and so far there haven't been a controller that has those and works from a simple cable too.

Don't you have a second controller? Just swap with that, nothing is easier than that and it doesn't make you waste money on batteries.

nigga what, I use and charge those damned batteries everyday over the course of years before I need to replace and they didn't even cost much

as for space, people typically complain the controllers are too small anyway -- so there's plenty of room for batteries
>>
>>377594613

Makes the DS4 a better controller for the PC than it is for the PS4.

>>377594665

>its good to charge batteries

Yeah, stupid as shit.
And no there isn't. People complain about the size of the controller where you grip it, just because you like 360 controller tier tumours that go against the ergonomy doesn't mean others do too.
Think of how stupid you are the next time you want to change batteries and you forgot to charge them.
>>
>>377590669
About as useless as the screen on a wiiu gamepad.
>>
>>377594784

and as a bonus you have hte option to take them out and put them in your own charger
>>
>>377594605
It does from what I remember. It just has a delayed notification.
>>
>>377594839
and it's especially nice when it comes to replacing since you don't need some obscure battery, and go opening the controller risking to mess things up

Only the notification is delayed. The screenshot is taken instantly. Its only a matter of if you have your setting on "hold" or simply "press" the button.
I take a ton of screenshots and not a single one has been delayed.

The notification also comes, after the screenshot is taken obviously.

I do and I know what instant means. Look at the screenshot I posted. If that was taken delayed, you'd just see a corpse lying on the ground.
I've no idea what the problem on your end is, but the screenshots aren't delayed for me.
>>
>>377595239

Well as I said, maybe its game dependant, I sure as fuck couldn't take a properly timed shot in Nier the last time I tried. Or possibly even pro-related.
In the end its pointless, the controller has its own screenshot button and its slow, has a delay at atleast in some games, and is an absolute bitch to move them from the console to a computer. for a dedicated function, its inferior to literally any form of it on PC.
>>
>>377595350
>its inferior to literally any form of it on PC.
That's just consoles altogether.
>>
>>377595350
Have you got it set to save as png? Because that adds a delay.
>>
>>377595350
>for a dedicated function, its inferior to literally any form of it on PC.
Well its there, so people can share screenshots in the playstation network. For that it actually works perfectly fine as a dedicated function.
I also wouldn't say its an absolute bitch to move them, since all you have to do is to insert a random usb medium and you can just select all of them and copy them over.
Sure, being able to use the home network would be a nice feature, but its not really necessary.
>>
>>377595439

True, but one would think this is something they could handle better, considering how on PC, before the advent of stuff like shadowplay which can dump shots/videos directly from the GPU you always had to use 3rd party options for it.
And yet they are still better.

>>377595478

Don't know, my console is just gathering dust for months now.

>>377595516

Having to physically move them is about as much of a bitch thing as it can be. Having to use fucking social media accounts for any non-physical option is ridiculous, atleast let you mail them or upload to a drive if I have to log onto somewhere anyway.

I now you deeply enjoy being a contrarian cocksucker right now, but I'm right in all possible ways, its 2017, you can send directly, through the internet, upload to a cloud, and all of this is one click on both machines. At this point the screenshots could be made available on a PC/Phone the moment you took them on your ps4 - THAT is what convenient is.

>>
>>377596530

I think the plastic is fine, the touchpad is okay especially for PC use, it most certainly is not taking "space" from a bigger battery, if you ever took yours apart, the defect is already fixed.

The light I absolutely agree on, the DS3's lights were perfectly fine, the update they made to it just made it way worse.

The way to actually fix these things is to make two versions - because trying to make a single controller fit ergonomically in the hands of 160cm tiny tiny japanese hands, as well as 190cm western big hands at the same time is just IMPOSSIBLE.
Mage a slim controller for the small handed and a big ass controller for the west.

Theres a massive mouse market on PC because everyone's hands are different and something that is a comfortable fit for one guy, may not be for the other. Meanwhile 1 controller "fits all" with controllers, kek.

>>
>>377594981
Of course it "works" mechanically, the problem is that the touchpad is so inconveniently shaped, sized, and located (because it has to fit onto an otherwise normal controller) that it's completely impractical to actually do anything with it. Especially so once you consider most games only like controller inputs or keyboard inputs at one time, so you can only bind it to the incredibly limited scope of inputs that are already on the controller. It's a complete boondoggle at best.
