For me Subnautica was like a stick of Juicy Froot chewing gum.

For a very short time when you've just started it, it's amazing. Very quickly it turns dull though.

I'd say the progression is a little more meaningful in the sense that you now get most building templates by exploring and going further and going further gets you more fun toys to get you further, There is still that grind however to get materials.

No, it's more like some of those artsy sea-exploration games but on an alien world and with some light plot.
It's not extremely plot heavy or survival-heavy but has both elements.
Those who most enjoy the game seem to enjoy it as just fucking around looking at the cool shit.
It's not horror at all but some people find parts scary just from the fear that comes from sea stuff, deep dark waters, open exposed expanses, the necessity of air.

The real gameplay and experience is the exploration. You are driven to explore so you can craft new shit and build a base and follow the vague plot. But it's all exploration at the end of the day.
The world is fun to explore because it's not randomly generated, and things are designed and placed meaningfully. It unfortunately shoots the kneecaps right off replayability, however.

It's the closest thing you can describe it too. Minecraft was the earliest and most popular crafting, base building type game. There was probably shit before it, but you can't deny it's the most well known.

Subnautica is definitely it's own thing, but there's a lot of base building involved.

In general just jumping into the game fresh you shouldn't be annoyed. But a lot of the pop in is caused by the voxel shit for terraforming. And they've planned to get rid of that for a long time to help optimize the game. But they haven't done it yet and it's been like a year since they said they would.

Their idea for improving gameplay over the last year or so has been to put boring but necessary base and survival features further and further behind gates. There's basically no reason to come back with each update unless you like redoing that same ten hour grind just so you can harass the new fish with the new gimmicky gadget.

When it finally releases sometime early 2018 it's going to be one and done flavour of the month.

It's not a funny bug or a bug that means you have to restart the game occasionally to fix. I could deal with that and it's what I expected. The disappearing items in lockers and other bugs didn't bother me.

But the pop-ins are constant and make vehicles unusable and ruins exploration. You can fucking crash into shit because you can't see plants until they're two feet in front of you.

I'm doubtful this will ever be fixed even after release.
