Probably, fuck knows. I got it 2nd hand from a guy who was a friend of a friend of mine. We ended up becoming friends because of the whole fiasco. The laptop's model number was a number between 2 of their other major models in the series, so I think it might've been some test model or something. It's sound hardware was totally incompatible with every driver on the internet, even Windows Sound Device and Soundblaster 16 which back then usually worked on everythin.

No idea what your problem could be. Only AOE not working sounds weird because its pretty much the same game and even gets installed into the same folder.
In your position i would think about clearing the registry or a complete new system reboot.
