Games that make you feel retarded

Don't worry, there's a learning curve to every game. Check your tax rates on cities, you can affect them even without a governor. Focus on taking over the British Isles, maybe bully the Iberian civs for a bigger tax base. I always pillage cities I take as well.

For combat, make sure to flank the enemy whenever you can because that ruins the morale of whoever gets attacked from behind. England has some of the best heavy infantry and heavy cavalry around as well as the best foot archers, so later it might get easier as you get to them.

M2 is probably the hardest TW game so don't beat yourself up about it.

Remember to always ask for map info and trade treaties, send your diplomats everywhere. Crusades are a gold mine, send your most retarded general with the minimum amount of peasants, because once he joins you can fill out his army with mercenaries for next to nothing (remember to disband them after it ends though). If you act quickly and send them by ship you'll take Jerusalem and your general will gain stacks of perks. Merchants make more money the farther they are away from your capital, so either send the far away or pack a few when you crusade.

The AI literally pulls armies out of its ass, which is why you need to send agents to their cities, they wont spawn insta armies if you can see them.

Also, don't try to hold onto Jerusalem if you take it at the start of the game, because its muslim and that makes the public order go down if you are catholic. If you want to conquer muslim/orthodox cities, send a priest there as well, they'll increase the percentage of Catholics and level them up, making them more likely to be made cardinals and increase the chances of a friendly pope.

M2 is the hardest because it's the most clunky. You would expect your units to charge and move if you tell them to, but not in M2 where your pikemen drop their pikes in melee or only the front line fo your unit charge while the rest just hangs back doing nothing.

It's not grand strategy, but yeah. Takes time and you'll get it. But the AI will literally never stop pulling armies out of its ass. Ever. That's a staple of the series.

In terms of the tactical battles I can understand why units don't respond immediately and uniformly, I can actually deal with that, it's the fucking recruitment and city construction parts of it I can't stand. You have a thousand different expensive buildings that do hardly anything for you and it takes about 50 turns to make an army that isn't just a full stack of boring peasant shitters thanks to the way recruitment works.

Shogun 2 would probably be a better place to actually be introduced to the series.
