>beating P4 let alone Nocturne
FFVII is the obvious choice. Nocturne is babby's first "I pretend to beat it just to gloat about it" jrpg.

since when smt was relevant?
Pokemon
Nocturne. Mainline SMT is the only JRPG series that actually rewards player skill in any way at all. All other JRPGs can be easily beaten through just grinding or have cheap, unfair secret bosses. I know you want to get into the JRPG genre, but most of it is rife with bad game design that creates artificial game length and is pretty braindead in mechanics despite appearing "deep" (aka it's for children) outside of SMT.

A lot of Bosses in nocturne can cancel buffs though

Compared to most jrpgs that is skill, they're usually press x to win
Final Fantasy VII for story sans the movie and spin-offs.
Nocturne for combat and fusion system.
