The only reason that people hate him is because he shows up, acts like a dick for a little bit, and then never has any sort of relevance again. Nintendo honestly really fucked up with Breath of the Wild's story and characters. They had the potential to be the absolute best yet, but they squandered it really hard, and the bad voice actors for characters like Mipha and Zelda were the icing on the cake.

I think that he clearly has a good side to him that was never really shown to the player. The characters are honestly nothing short of lazily done I would say. I'm not trying to nitpick, but it would have been nice to do a bit more with them. Best/worst example is Teba, how you meet him in the mountains, so a minigame, and then go fight Medoh with him, only for him to fuck off back to the mountains forever with his son.

It's not directly stated anywhere, but strongly implied that Revali was hard on Link because he thought Link was gifted a position he didn't earn. Basically, Link found and earned the Master Sword quite easily. King Rhoam, who is stated to be quite pious, wanted to follow the Ganon prophecy to the letter, so he forced Zelda to abandon her scholarly pursuits in favor of praying to unlock her birthright sealing powers, and promoted Link and made him important.

Link basically went from a nobody to a celebrity, the overnight chosen one. Revali was skeptical of his skills, and as a trained Rito warrior and the best of his people, Revali might have seen himself as having earned what Link just got on a silver platter. Revali's mean and cocky, but he also talks to Link with an occasional air of authority. He might see himself as being Link's superior in terms of skill.

There's also the fact that he sympathises with Zelda. That one line at the end of the 'you beat Windblight Ganon' cutscene hints at this, and would be another reason for him wanting to whip Link into shape.
