In general that's a very uncommon trope for gay characters in media, the few times I've seen something like that portrayed in a story is justified by some kind of past trauma that the character must overcome, but that is something that takes a long time to develop and not the kind of thing you can put in a mainstream game such as this, because the game is definitely not about the sexual orientation or romance of any of its specific characters.
You can pretty much only do that in story driven games with some focus on romance, more easily on yuri VN, but the trope you call is uncommon.

With Overwatch there's such a huge disconnect between the game itself and the """lore""" that Blizzard makes for it that they don't even fee related. In game all you hear are the static characters spouting the same handful of lines over and over again with no mention of anything personal. It just feels like a shallow is shooter game, and that's exactly what it is.

A good example of in-game characterization in a multiplayer game is in League of Legends, of all places. Champions have all of their personality right there in game as you play them. The game itself IS the source material for all the lore, not some terribly made fa fiction tier comic that only a small fraction of the player base has ever read.

It was a single panel in a supplementary comic and probably won't ever be mentioned in the actual game. Overwatch started out mostly begin a Burger King's Kid's Club oppression Olympics sort of game. This and the amazing brown mech pilot/hacker/sniper mom just drive the point home further.

I stopped playing before the first new character was added because I was tired of pretending that every country around the world would have super high levels of tech in the future and not drive themselves back into the dark ages (looking at you, Egypt).

Plus, the gameplay got fucking boring. Games that exist solely to be PvP lack originality. Even the concept of specific, named, unique characters that go into battle without regard for alliances and just keep respawning whenever they die is completely counter intuitive to story telling and makes me wonder why they bothered making human characters to begin with.
