So how is it?
>>
Utterly forgettable.
>>
I'll tell you in a bit, haven't started it yet. Also I'm waiting to finish prey cause almost done. Reviews said it had a few surprises in store that they wouldn't ruin so I'm going to see for myself.
>>
>>377544721
Worth it on sale at least?
>>
>>377544771

Heh, I'm looking at The Surge because my game of Prey broke and I'm waiting, hoping a patch will fix my broken 30 hours in saves.

I think it's pretty great

Combat is a lot of fun.
World is very connected like DS1, but all the areas look kinda similar.
Not that much weapon variety, kinda like BB.
Crafting stuff is good.
Implants are good and actually let you make up "builds" on the fly.
Enemies deal a ton of damage, every trash mob can fuck you up if you dont watch out, which can be annoying after a while.
Game actually has a story that kept me playing, because I wanted to know wtf happened.
Game looks pretty good, crashed once in 25 hours of play.
If you like soulsgames, this one will be fun for you.
People who say its like Lords of the Fallen, or even worse, are out of their fuckin mind.
>>

>>
>>377544636
Eh I'm enjoying it, most times I have no idea where I'm supposed to go or supposed to do. Almost couldn't find it, thought Prey was the American title for a second
>>
Why does blocking continually drain stamina?
How does standing there with your guard up and not getting hit tire you out?
>>
If you dont like games that have apparent flaws dont play it, other that that there is fun and challenge to be had here, but they went a bit overboard with some enemy placements and hp and damage
>>
You know, it's not terrible. It's pretty decent.
I thought it was awful because I kept playing it like a Souls game, but once I just played it as its own thing. It was pretty enjoyable.

If you're going play it, just throw out anything Souls related out of your head.
>>
>>377548729
shame it's marketed as a souls-like
>>
>>377548886
>marketed

No, you mean idiots on the internet that have to compare everything to other games
>>
This game is aggressively subpar. The combat is fucking terrible, and the bosses are fucking awful. The only vaguely decent thing about this game is a few of the songs and a really good job on sound work, and that's about it. The level design is garbage, the amount of copypaste hallways is actually a seriously counterproductive feature, and the vast majority of enemies in the game are brainless hoverbots and other assholes in power armor. The only boss that was actually good was the 5th boss, and considering the game ends in probably the lamest way I have ever seen a video game end in history, I can safely say this is not worth a full purchase by any metric. If you can find it sub-$30, it's worth a consideration. $20 is the highest I would ever pay for this dreck again.
>>
>>377549039
it's the game's fault for presenting itself as a souls-like

not to mention their previous game was also a souls-like that sucked

There's a skeleton of a great game to be found in The Surge, but it's just that: a framework with unrealized potential. I could see a sequel becoming a genuinely good title, but only if they really work on giving it some real substance and tinkering with some some shit. I really disagree with how they made armor values effectively useless compared to just straight boosting health, and I hate how all of the exoskeletons have massive gaping structural vulnerabilities.

>>
>>377549406
I actually liked Nioh quite a bit.
>>
I wanted to enjoy this shitty game, but the enemies and bosses ruined it for me. It's not necessarily that the main combat is genuinely bad as much as there is nothing worthy of mastery in the entire game. Everything has comically slow telegraphed attacks, or ridiculously fast attacks you need to look in the future to know when to block or dodge. Enemies in the map are either piss easy and not even worthy of fighting, or they are so fucking fast that it's pretty much pointless to do anything but constantly dodge and eventually slip in smaller weapon attacks to chip them out. The game clearly wasn't tested at length, and if it was, the testers are retarded.
>>
>>377549468
so did i but i wont play it again in the next 5 years
whereas i finish bb once every a couple of months
>>
I liked it but then it seemed kinda boring with time
its not worth the effort since u only have 1 base and u respawn there everytime u die
>>
>>377544636

It's honestly pretty good if you like challenging games. Every enemy does shittons of damage, so you've gotta git gud at blocking/dodging or you'll get your shit wrecked very easily.

That said, it is buggy. People have reported progression killing bugs (unable to grab some items), and I personally got a bug literally right before the last boss that is forcing me to restart the whole game as the door to him simply will not open. But that isn't the first game to do this to me, but neither should it be excused for that.

Overall though, I'm having a lot of fun with it, and am using this 2nd playthrough to get the 2.0 boss weapons, which I missed out on except for the axe.
>>
There's a quick save and quick load under F5 and F8, respectively, and it seems like it's a feature that's left out from beta testing cause every time you quick load, it respawns all enemies. Take that as you will.
>>
>>377551209
>2.0 boss weapons

>>
>>377551378
I'm not surprised to hear that, like I said, it's a clear overlook.
>>
Worth pirating. Not paying for.

Thanks Codex
>>
>>377551209

Oh, and it plays more like Bloodborne than Dark Souls. It's faster, isn't filled with a thousand useless weapons, and definitely rewards aggression over trying to sit back and turtle it up. There still are shitty weapons yeah, but generally you're going to find some good ones pretty quick, and the upgrade system is mercifully easy to use.
>>
>>377551353

If you kill the bosses in specific ways-For example, killing the first boss ONLY by knocking him over by smacking his legs, never once letting his own missiles knock him over-You get more powerful versions of the boss weapons with a 2.0 moniker attached to them (ie: PAX 2.0, etc). These boss weapons sometimes have special effects, like the 2nd bosses weapon shooting fire blasts or making rings of fire around you, or the 4th bosses weapon shooting big arcs of electricity from certain attacks.
>>
>>377544636
All the fun of the Souls series with zero depth.

So its shit.
>>
>>377551830
Ok ok.
>>
>>377551830
>>377551951

And fuck, they have different damage values too. The 2.0 versions do more damage, and sometimes the types of damage are different too.

The game is a solid 7.5 or 8/10 or so. It's not perfect, but it's challenging and it's a solid game, progression destroying bugs not withstanding anyway. Hopefully it gets patched soon.
>>
>>377551883

The Quick Look I saw made it seem like it was a sci-fi Lords of the Fallen
>>

it's an exo skeleton, not power armor
>>
>>377552825
It is.

Except in Lords of the Fallen you could actually choose builds. You don't really choose builds, you just pump core power which unlocks implants, which are tied to literally everything, including your healing items.

Core power is a shit mechanic. If you're wearing heavy armor, you can't use all your implants without sacrificing them for auxillary power cores.

Combat is insanely repetitive. Same 4-5 enemy types throughout the whole game, same fighting style no matter what - except you hit slightly faster or slower.
Level design is the biggest fucking dogshit I've seen in the past 10 years. Just terrible.
Protagonist has zero personality or charisma.
NPCs and quests are shallow as fuck.
Story is generic.
No replayability.

It's not good at all. At least the hitboxes are better than Lords of the Fallen, but pretty much nothing else is. However if you care about social issues and inclusivity and all that you'll be happy because this thing has more brown people in it than your nearest mosque.

Twin-rigged only. I've been using the Firebug ever since I got it. Slapped on a shitton of stamina implants, put on the Gorgon set and wail on fuckers. Are there any good staffs in the game? Twin rigged gets some brutal weapons, and single rigged gets the PAX 2.0 right off the first boss as basically the best single rigged weapon in the game.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmR1ehmmwkc
>>
>>377558642
The Spitfire Rod you get off of Big Sister is pretty great, I eventually switched to Codename: Carmina since I didn't get the 2.0 version of the spitfire.

Speaking of which, does the Spitfire 2.0 do anything cool like the Firebug?
>>
>>377558642
What's even the point of staffs? They don't seem to have longer reach, at least not significant enough to make a difference and they're only slightly faster than single rigged weapons. What's their specialty?
>>
>>377558974
AoE, they got spin2win.
>>
>>377559121
But it's rare as fuck to be swarmed by enemies.
>>
like all new western games, it's garbage
>>
>>377558974

Variety I guess. They don't seem to be bad weapons.

Honestly which weapon you use seems to matter more than the type. The PAX 2.0, Firebug 2.0, hell, all the 2.0 boss weapons seem pretty good.

Also, does the PAX 2.0 do anything special? I know the firebug has it's fire kamehameha's and the axe has it's energy waves, but whats the PAX do? Same with the other 2.0 boss weapons, whats their special gimmick if any?
>>
>>377558974
Single-rigged felt too slow for me, and Staffs do have a bit more reach, especially with their strong and fast as fuck forward step attack.
>>
>>377559946

Single rigged I noticed usually starts with a slow ass swing but transitions into a fast as fuck elbow.

>>377557662

>>
so how the fuck do you kill robots in this game. I'm at the second area now and both the arc welder bots and the tripod fuckers absolutely fuck my shit

mob damage is fucking insane and needs a rebalance, armor doesn't matter for shit in this game which is retarded
>>
>>377560964
Armor does matter for stability at least, compare Lynx and Rhino - the second will let you truck through hits without being staggered where the other gets knocked out of animations all day erry day.
>>
>>377560964

Depends on the robot. The big welder ones with the torches though, you damage their front leg, then go around and wail on the back leg for massive damage.

The dog robot fuckers though, I have no fucking clue. They're fast and hit like a fucking truck.

As for armor, it matters, but you NEED TO SLOT STATBOOSTS INTO YOUR FUCKING SLOTS. I think thats an issue people are having, is they just don't slot in +HP and shit. Do that. Put +HP in there, you'll find your survivability goes through the fucking roof with extra HP.

Also upgrade your armor values, it actually does a lot of good. You'll take big damage, but not so much it isn't manageable if you fuck up, VS being nearly 1 shot by everything.
>>
>>377560964
With tripods, break off the "tail" leg and they get a lot less dangerous. Their lunge is the biggest problem so don't give them space.

Welders, learn to leap and duck their sweep attacks and then counter, you can stun them then hit the rear leg for actual decent damage.
>>
>>377560964
The game wants you to use the jump/duck dodge to avoid and counter the arc welder bot's sweeps. I just circle around until it goes for an attack then smack it in it's weak rear leg.

>>377561235
>The dog robot fuckers though, I have no fucking clue. They're fast and hit like a fucking truck.

They make a specific noise when going for their leap attack. Dodge it and use a slide attack to catch up and hit them. You can break their front legs to disable the jump or cut the tail off for a free ancillary core.

Their quick tail swipe is blockable and can be countered, too. I haven't had much success with that though.
>>
>>377561372
their lunge is the easiest attack to bait and punish
>>
>>377561235
Is it supposed to stagger them? I beat on their ass all day but they never give an opening to get the back leg and they eventually just wreck me
I have all the +HP boosts I've gotten slotted in too and it's not really helping.
>>
How do you guys deal with those crystal fuckers in the Nucleus? Every fight I have with them just feels like desperate flailing.

>>
>>377561235
>The dog robot fuckers though
Did you know they stagger? I use the Bloodhound (Mk III) on them. I usually wait till they lunge and then side dash twice. Three hits to top tail usually do the trick, 3-4 hits to the front legs finishes them. Then again I have 3 Mk III stamina and 1 Mk V stamina ups and use the lynx to abuse the twirl.

The game is solid. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's not a piece of shit either. It's worth playing, but for what price that is up to you. It is difficult though, and despite everyone calling it "hurr durr Dark Souls", it plays more like Bloodborne than DS.

I'd personally clock it around a high 70's game. You know, 78-ish or so. It has some bugs that do need patching, because they can completely null your playthrough by preventing progression.

The blob things are what wreck me every time. I really can't figure out what to do besides "keep moving, stay the hell away and land a dash attack whenever they show an opening".
>>
>>377562062

Those guys are sort of like Black Knights when you encounter them-They're tougher and hit harder than the other enemies the first time you get into that area, and their armor is meant for higher leveled characters.
>>
>>377562062
Those become super common late game and are entirely optional early on, they aren't guarding anything. But if you can get one of their staffs they are pretty good early on. Gorgon is also the best armor in the game too if you ask me so it's worth trying to get all the pieces early if you feel lucky. They don't respawn either so be aware of that.
>>
>>377562224
It's honestly not worth fighting the blobs. Avoidance is the best option if you ask me. They hit too hard, have tons of health, require a special execution to take down and don't even give comparably good scrap.
>>
>>377562294

I don't know if Gorgon is the best. You can just slot the implant that cuts 25% off dodging stamina costs and it basically means you have infinite stamina due to that alone. Faster regen at that point is kind of moot, and other sets have some pretty nice effects.

How are those heavy armored fucks so fast. They swing those heavy weapons like it's nothing.
>>
>>377562410
It's not about the evasion stamina, it's being able to swing away forever with minimal downtime, that regen is great. Only gorgon and lynx are any good honestly. Everything else is mediocre or garbage.

for the tripods you gotta dodge a lot.
bait close attacks from the tail, dodge out, dodge in for attack, then dodge out.

if the tripod does the flip and backs away, you gotta dodge away, then either dodge in twice and attack, then dodge out..
OR, move laterally while waiting for the jump, then dodge just as it leaves the ground, dodge in attack, dodge out.
>>
>>377553158
Compared to dark souls it has better combat and level design, like i know where a shortcut should be based on the layout. Each weapon is fun to use and has like 20 different attacks you can use. Really highlights how simplistic dark souls combat is.Blocking works but youre encouraged to go more bloodborne style with it. So far i can actually figure out the bossess strategies on the first go, and the #1 strategy isnt "hit their ass until they die". No character creation but i never really used that. They did a cool spin on upgrading system where in story youre upgrading youre exo suit, not just becoming smarter by 2 points. They dont really flesh out on your character and why he would go through all of it. You get a drone that works like spells but you build mana by doing damage and timing attacks better

Proteus is ok, but the healing is too slow. Nice that they give a slight attack speed boost but the drone power increase sucks hard. Gorgon, a couple health injectors, a power to health, and some implanted electrodes beats out proteus set(and everything else) imo. Its just the perfect blend of defense and utility. -50% drone cost, crazy good stamina regen, not super high power cost.

Only the kinetic shield drone is any worth on bosses but it's fucking amazing to have for them because sometimes you didn't dodge far enough or in the right direction. Flamethrower drone is better for dealing damage than the laser but I've never tried it on a boss honestly.

>>
>>377565540
Pax2.0 does a ground slam if you hold rt rather than a stab like the regular one. It also deals more damage becoming the best single rigged weapon in the game considering it's got 70% energy gain. It also looks like it has a bit of an aoe on the slam but I can't tell.

Black Serbs is easier to dodge than the standard security troop.he's trivial already. Also if you get the PAX he summons, to hit the white cannister it stops him from spawning more pax's (so you only need to fight 1) and it also gives you the entire black cerberus set upon killing him.

I think one minor thing that could make the game better is changing the lock on system to cycle, rather than purely direction. Or at least the option to. And I don't think it autotarhets the chest when you lock on. Noticed on the firebug and pax switching the lock on to another appendage had a delay too. I don't like that.

I don't think dying resets your mult either, so what you could do is leave one guy near ops alive then clear out the level, then go back to the guy you left, let him kill you, so when you respawn your fat stack is nearby so you can grab it, go bank it and then repeat while not losing your multiplier

The level of the materials is determined by the armor they're wearing.

Lynx/Rhino gives Mk1 parts.
Scarab/Liquidator gives Mk2.
Elite Hazard/Proteus/Gorgon gives Mk3.
Bloody Proteus/Cerberus/Chrysalis gives Mk4.

There's lore precedent for it. Essentially "honor your wargear but if the mission demands it, do whatever necessary." Dudes have literally scavenged gear off Chaos Marines when their own wargear failed - probably get chewed out for it later but whatevs.

I am pleasantly surprised with this game. Lords of the Fallen was boring trash while this game manages to be more satisfying in literally every way. Even the story, as generic and standard it is, is miles better than LotF storytelling. It's pretty Souls-inspired, but in a way like how Castlevania and Metroid are both similar. It's becoming more of its own thing which is great and keeps it fresh.

Level design is honestly really good and the combat is pretty smooth. Some clunkiness here and there, but overall it feels pretty satisfying. I think a lot of the enemies deal too much damage, but at least the dodge system is good enough.

Will I get shot if I say that I'm enjoying this as much as DS2-3?

>>377571661

>>
>>377576836

Twin Rigged probably end up the strongest. The firebug weapon pretty much is a rape train once you get some levels in twin profs, and the weapon from the last boss, the double claws, is probably outright broken.
>>
>>377576618

Which is silly since one handed and twin-rigged are just insane.

>>
>>377577346

People make the rookie mistake of a lot of games of "bigger number=obviously more damage" without considering other factors such as range, number of hits over any given time span, the actual attack and defense mechanics of a game, etc.

That said, the PAX is pretty damn good. You can run the whole game with it, but it's still a big, slow as shit weapon which will make you look like a shit player because if you don't time things right you'll get your shit wrecked.
>>
>>377577274
Il shill for the pax v2 being the best all day. But it is seriously hard to compete with the logic that since the most broken weapon in the game is dual rigged you should probibly go with dual rig from the start for levels. And yeah, firebug is good and also fun.

You know what's weird about The Surge?

The enemies on NG+ and more on NG++ actually use the proper movesets and are far more aggressive.

I find it odd because in NG i was unimpressed with how the enemy humanoids use ~2-3 moves each total. On NG+ you start meeting (once in awhile) more humanoids that use sprinting attacks, dodge spam, actually play like phantoms from Souls.

On NG++ it picks up even steeper, and more enemies start spamming dodges, slide attacks, jump/ducks on your swings, etc.

Why this is all so strange is because why wouldn't they implement this curve through the main NG cycle? It's so much more engaging to get jumped by 3 guys with 3 different weapons and who use them properly than 1 by 1 the same enemies with the same pipe or staff who can't use more than 2 moves.
>>
>>377579238

Also,

I started out using the Astir Vibroblade basic one-handed sword for most of my NG playthrough, I tried some of the heavy weapons and never liked their lack of damage output...

But then I got the Judge 2.0 and i've never used anything since, outside of trying out movesets. The Judge 2.0 + Bloodied Proteus Set is my staple.

I'm on NG+++, with my Judge 2.0 XV
>>
>>377579238
>Why this is all so strange is because why wouldn't they implement this curve through the main NG cycle?

Bloodied Proteus is actually the best set in the game, by the way. Better overall defense than proteus, and the healing increase is +33%; it makes the Healkit v5 heal for 400, which is easily socketed towards the end of NG/early NG+.

I sit at 500 HP with 400 per heal, 9x heals, generally; bloodied proteus and a Judge 2.0. it's a good life in CREO.

Not so, unfortunately. The security guys are as affected by the Surge as everyone else; notice that Irina gets corrupted and eventually turned 'into' Security as the game goes on if you interact with her and fulfill her requests. Black Cerberus also retains some measure of self.

I think it's more that everyone/everything in the complex is under some measure of control, Warren included. The audio tapes from the girl in the vents indicated she's working for Sally / the Process as well, and eventually betrays the Process and all her rig/fixes/medical treatments simply stop working.

I think it's that the Process is looking for potentates to reach the Board to 'yesvote' the Utopia launch? But as you get there, the last vote dies and you're left in a dystopian situation where the outcome can't be what the process wants, and it's mixed up with the birth of the nanite-being (process?). So it's kind of confusing.

Shrug.
>>
>>377581365

She's not actually; she's being reprogrammed or fucked up in the head into being security. Just like everyone else in CREO is being slowly warped into the conscious thought-form of the apotheosis of nanite-thing coming to life.

She's an engineer.
>>
>>377582006

Where do you get bloodied proteus?

Also wait, I missed something. What is Sally? I thought she was a person.
>>
>>377582063
M8...

I left the room after I killed her, and when I came back there was a robutt skeleton on the floor.
>>
>>377582186

Yeah, her burning up and turning into a robot skellington was a real "what the fuck" moment. This game has a lot of unexpected horror moments in it thanks to the shit towards the latter half.
>>
>>377582006
I just finished the boardroom, and it seems like Sally was trying to stop Utopia. Like, why would your big dramatic moment be "We already had them 4-3, but we needed 5-3 for reasons."
>>
>>377583012
You're correct. Imo they really fucked up the Sally thing, one moment you try to get to her, the next she's trying to resuscitate a dude for him to vote no. Where's the exposition, where is she, why is she doing this, how is she doing this. It just comes out of nowhere.
>>
Literally just finished the game and I have no idea what the fuck is going on. I understand as much about what Project Resolve is and how Utopia is a lazy, fast-tracked version of it. But what the fuck was going on in the end? What the shit is even that end boss? Just some nanites that gained sentience or something?

Also, I'm gonna head right back into it for another playthrough. Anyone know all the unique shit to do with the bosses to get them to drop the bonus loot?
>>
>>377583436
Wiki has all the info senpai.
>>
>>377583012
I think it was more due to the vote still being pending. There was still the chance for the vote to go 4-4 and the machine can't break that protocol.
>>

Why resuscitate then, when you can just kill him.
Pointless.
>>
>>377583610

From what I gathered, and correct me if I'm wrong

>CREO is trying to revitalize the Earth because humanity fucked it up
>makes a project for it, Resolve
>Resolve is going well, but fuckhead CEO's of CREO want results NOW NOW NOW
>they decide to make another project
>this project also will revitalize the Earth...By killing 99% of all life on it and letting it just regrow from there, while putting the CEO's brains into robot bodies because fuck dying, right?
>to kill all life they decide to use NANOMACHINES, SON
>nanomachines
>when some of their other AI's have already begun exhibiting deviant behaviors
>also they're gonna hook it into their big neural network thingy that all of the guys in the game have
>nanomachines develop sentience due to shitty programming, and the nanomachines decide "lol fuck everyone"
>everything goes to shit, nanomachines fuck up everyones (or almost everyones) brains
tl;dr Everyone got Kojima'd.

its weird. quick load didnt respawn enemies on me in the first two areas. but in area three, the biolab, it does now. and now im fucked because i was relying on that to enjoy the game, as its barely decent when things are going my way; but when im dying and shit, i just want to quit because the game isnt good enough to warrant my time.

i was willing to work for that shit in bloodborne and dark souls, but this game isnt as good or fun.
>>
>>377584190
Sounds about right, one guy even tried to fix the nanomachine code but failed in the end.

Also a nitpick- resolve itself was toxic, despite fixing the atmosphere.
>>
>>377584525
Just goes to show that the devs can't even play their own game without using quick save/load. Ultimately, it's a single player game and if you just want to finish the story then cheat engine is always an option.
>>
>>377582183

Bloodied proteus is from the one guy you fight just before Dr. Douchebag in the Restricted Labs of R&D.

The special semi-boss nanohominid guy just before the area is over. His set is "Bloodied Proteus", as compared to the normal Proteus sets.

You gotta kill him over and over. He also drops one tier of resource higher than everything else in the area; so you can farm him to upgrade your weapon to Mark IV before you normally would have it. (Or armor. Or everything).
>>
>>377584543

But they also had fixed versions of it that didn't give people...Whatever Resolve gave them. Cancer or whatever, I dunno, not sure if they ever said. Pretty sure some of the breakables in the biolabs for Resolve didn't release gas, for example, indicating there were safe versions of it.
>>
>>377584525

>>377584643

When you've got to fight a boss 30 times in a day to test its behavior, those are necessary.
>>
>>377584686

>>
>>377584696
In the end resolve was canned anyway wasn't it? Made that female scientist pretty salty, she was pretty close to the fix.
>>
>>377584831

Well, when you get to the board room you can plainly see they were voting on whether to can it, since the whole issue there was the AI seemed unable to progress with saturating the world with itself until the vote was over. The one board member hanging on by a thread for like 3 fuckin' days was stalling the whole process and deadlocked it because he hadn't voted by the time the AI shat up the whole network and brainfucked almost everyone at CREO.
>>
>>377577902
>>377577993

wrong. its my main weapon. it has medium in all three stats. impact, scaling, and speed. all medium. right down the middle. and i love it. the 30% energy gain isnt bad either
>>
>>377584953
You're confusing resolve with utopia.
Two entirely different things, they were voting on utopia launch while resolve has been canned for a long time.
>>
>>377585419

It is kind of late, yeah. I could've sworn it wasn't entirely canned, but again, it's almost 4AM. Fuck yeah insomnia I guess.

Either way the whole process was gummed up by the vote-The AI needed it to launch to get on with the whole "Killing all of the planet except maybe Kojima because he's a pretty cool guy" thing.
>>
It's mediocre. It's got no online components, tries to be dark souls but doesn't come close in atmosphere (everything's an almost identical sci-fi generic all the way through), the combat is cool with body targeting, but that doesn't really effect combat or how you move or strike, you just do more or less damage. It will say it's nice for not needing to pray you get random drops, but it's annoying because you now have to grind one enemy for one specific part and hope your executes go through.

It's missing a ton of actual fun variety in it's gameplay, everything's melee with you shitting out energy "techs" that are 100% always better spent on executions and heals.

It's basically like lords of the fallen, go big slow heavy hitter or go home.
>>
>>377585557
And then some chum fucked up the nanomachine code in the rocket before hacking it apart.

RIP nanomachine-god dreams.
>>
>>377585730

I gotta admit, I do like that they also put in a lot of possible red herrings as to what exactly the fuck was going on. Usually games try one misdirect and then do some dramatic midgame reveal.

>>377585702

Just about every weapon type is effective, all you need is a good weapon for that type. Problem is they just hand you the PAX in like the first hour of the game, so you get the idea single rigged weapons are the best because you see "Ooh big damage number" when the damage number isn't actually too reflective of how much damage you'll really be doing.
>>
>>377585702
>It's basically like lords of the fallen, go big slow heavy hitter or go home.
Except dual rig is 100% better.

They should patch out the PAX before all these soulsfags miss out on the real game.
>>
>>377585948
>first time trying out Firebug plus full Lynx gear
Christ, I was not ready for how fast that shit is.
>>
>>377585948

I really do blame the streamers for everyone thinking the game is slow. Just about every fucking one of them is using the PAX. Which, ok, it is a good weapon. However, it's a slow, weighty hunk of metal. But fuck, you get a lot of good weapons pretty early on.

>>377586026

Getting the 2.0 version is pure fucking suffering. That asshole boss would not let me get to his legs for like 10 fucking tries, he would always do anything that would keep me away. I'm fine with them being OP as shit because of the annoyance of getting those fucking things.
>>
>>377586091
>tfw got the Firebug 2.0 by accident
I thought legging the guy was how you had to to di.
>>
>souls, bloodborne, or souls-like game
>heavy armor is either overpowered or fucking worthless
>defense in general either does nothing (at most giving you 1 extra hit before death) or allows you to tank everything

Does a single game developer know how to balance this shit?
>>
>>377586335

The bland truth of heavy armor sucking in these games is a simple one: If heavy armor was effective, the game would be too easy. If it actually made tanking possible (ie: just sitting there and taking hits the face), it would be OP and people would bitch the game is too easy because they can take giant swords to the face and keep right on slugging, not even having to dodge outside of occasional 1HKO's some games do.

Thats why light shit is always the best, because they by default always make heavy armor kind of meh. That said, Scarab armor is pretty good in this for a large chunk of the game because having more HP in this game is always a good thing, and it allows you to get the most HP the earliest.

I don't really like having to devote slots to shit like HP (even though it's a really good idea to do so).

>>377586778

The amount of testing that would be needed to get that sort of balance "right" is insane compared to the amount that is practical, especially on the budgets that these sort of games have.
>>

Pretty much this.
Gathering and Crafting feels pretty good.
Small Enemies can be very annoying and kill you in an instant. Especially in the second level. When they start hitting you with Combos.
Performance wise it works very very well, but you do need a good machine. The 770GTX brings out most of the details with a solid framerate.
Leveling gives you nothing but a bigger fitting pool for Implants, which in return, makes your Character grow.
The Abilities so far are kinda forgettable. There are some neat Healing abilities in combat.
The overall speed of the combat is somewhat between BB and DarkSouls. So it's faster than most of the Souls.
You gain Bossweapons in 2 different Versions depending on how you defeat the boss.
For the First Boss: If you kill PAX without him hurting himself with his rockets you gain a better version of his Weapon
For the Second Boss: Kill him after you broke all of his arms
Bosses can be very tricky to beat when you focus on getting the better weapon variants.
Overall: This is by far better than Lords of the Fallen and you should try it if you like Souls games.

>>
>>377599972
pretty sure it was explained on a crate in the second zone along with the ducking and jumping over of attacks
>>
>>377600029
Half the attacks in the game go straight through it, that's how, and there's no indication which will or won't. The only way to tell is to literally trial-and-error with every single enemy to figure out which of their attacks can be blocked and which can't. Add to the fact combat speed is pretty fucking fast, the block is absurdly sluggish, and getting hit even once from almost anything is guaranteed 20-30% off your lifebar, it always makes more sense to dodge.
>>
>>377600215
Most attacks have to be frame perfect guarded, just holding block and waiting for the attack to hit is basically as good as not blocking at all

>>
>>377600060
All of them. For example the player's dual attack combo from the weapon he gets from the second boss, are the same from Lords of the Fallen's Dual Knives and Claws.

The forward jump attack some enemies do in The Surge are 1:1 the same animation Vanguards do in Lords of the Fallen.

The greatsword animations are very similiar to the heavy weapon in the surge, including the executions.

Just to name the prominent ones. I think the only animation that looks vaguely modified is the running animation.

How the fuck do i beat Black Cerberus anon?

This area just fucks me up, 3 guards and then the floating box, you can skipp all ofthem, but it's a pain to do it every time you die to the boss.

I've tried changing to the gorgon rig and had to remove a bunch of chips. but the armor is doing fucking nothing and the stamina bonus doesn't seem that great and i'm out of healing items and when the PAX spawns it refuses to fucking drop. Jesus, this is just frustrating.

Pretty good. The environments (area 2 especially) and enemies are a bit uninspired but it does a very solid job with its sci fi souls premise overall.

I can see Surge 2 being really good if they build on the foundations of this one.

Honest actual review coming through here.

The combat is engaging and interesting, enemies do way too much damage so you are always under the constant threat of being killed instantly due to one wrong move. Theres a lot of weight to every action you decide to take and the game gives you a lot of leeway into letting you play however you want. If I was to rank the combat system alone, it's definitely more engaging then darksouls combat, but definitely not as smooth or interesting as nioh's combat.
However, the combat has one giant flaw. The way the lock on system works in this game makes fighting more than one enemy at a time an absolute nightmare, it's a seriously annoying process to lock on to one enemy, completely drop the lock on, then hope it locks onto the right enemy, then focus on his weakspot, the entire action of doing that can take several seconds. The way the game deals with this is rarely ever forcing you to fight more than one enemy at a time, and making all the enemies very similar. It's no lie to say that 80% of the enemies you fight are functionally identical with different armor. Theres some robot enemies, but they are never frequent or interesting enough to break up the monotony of the actual 50th human enemy in a row.

Grinding is literally required. Gears come in levels, and in order to complete an area you basically need the gear level of that area. If you were already doing no-weapon fatroll only challenge runs in darksouls, maybe this won't bother you, but if you want to enjoy the game, you are expected to do a fair bit of grinding for grinding sake.

More to come.

Everything is unpolished, it feels like nobody playtested the game, or they tested everything in isolation and then were like "it works." and never tested how it works in each situation. Enemies frequently get stuck on objects, unable to move or attack. Enemies frequently hit weird bumps in the map and start uncontrollably vibrating. Whenever you enter an elevator if you walk in too fast the elevator wont register that you are in it, so you need to leave the elevator and walk back into it. Whenever you approach a terminal to use it, there is for some reason a small area in which it'll tell you that the button is a button instead of using the button. (seriously) So you'll have to walk a bit closer and try again. The Drone companion misses far too often for a mechanic you have absolutely no control over. (When you take out your drone it'll wait a bit then do it's attack which you can't aim or effect after you take it out, if the enemy is at a brisk walking pace it'll often miss.)

This list goes on and on. Nothing works just as it should, everything is just a little bit buggy for the entire duration of the game.

The areas are all on giant factory, and look nearly identical to eachother, no one area stands out as a particularly well designed or different experience. Often the direction the game wants you to go is completely hidden in a web of identical hallways. You'll go far far too long without reaching a shortcut, and the shortcut is always free of enemies for the most part. Often a single short cut will force you to wait through three to four psudo loading screens. (wait for the elevator, wait for the exolift)

Final post about this.

The game is 6 areas long, theres 6 bosses, the game did literally laughably so theres almost no chance of it getting DLC/Expansion/sequel. Which is too bad because theres just not enough content in t his game. The souls-like difficulty, the loss of tech scraps don't feel like a fun or planned mechanic (Even thoughthey were) they feel like padding to keep you playing a hilariously short game for longer so they could say it's 20 hours long instead of admitting it's got 8 hours of content.

The bosses are the best the game has to offer, enemies that are completely unique and different, and... they kinda suck. It's really too bad. There's absolutely no indication of how exactly you are supposed to deal with any boss when you first meet it. In most games, even the hardest of games, your healthbar is forgiving enough or the bosses give you enough room that you can scout out the situation, get a feeling for what the boss is going to do, or what moves it has, where it's weakpoints are, and when it'll let you hit them. IF they have a pattern, or whatever.

In the surge, you walk into the first boss area, and it has two bars, one is it's health, and the other is it's legs current damage. You need to slap it's legs till it falls over and lets you hit it's head. Except... whenever you get it's legs to max damage, it jumps away and fires missiles at you, then you have to run under it so the missile hits itself. This is a fairly in depth sequence of events, and if you get hit twice at any point you'll just die because it does a billion damage, the missiles will just kill you. Theres no indication that you should use the missiles to help you, and theres no real way to dodge them. You'll just die several times with no warning. All the bosses have these specific sequence you need to do, and all of them kill you in one or two hits. Some bosses even have multiple phases of specific sequences.

5/10 It BARELY justifies continuing to play to the end.

Everything about the Gameplay/combat, environments, setting, aesthetics/art style are 10/10

Enemy design gets repetitive, only 5 bosses but each boss is pretty fun and different than the last. Most of the games difficulty comes from mobs and ambushs. Armor design is a bit cookie cutter most robo suits look mostly the same with different colors or bulkyness. The weapons on the other hand are all fun to use, theres not many types like bloodborne but each weapon offers their own variety of fun and techniques in combat.

Overall id give it a 8.5/10 had alot of good stuff going for it, but its a bit short and only 5 bosses as swell as enemy designs and armor being a bit boring.

Unique boss weapons that you gain if you defeat bosses in specific ways.

PAX (First Boss): you get it by beating him without getting him to target himself with his rockets, the trick to this is waiting between his legs without locking on until he does his leg stomp then attack the other leg, he will fall over same as if he was hit with rockets.

Fire Bug (Second Boss): you start the fight by cutting off three legs then the boss will change his attack patterns and expose a weak point under him, at this stage instead of targeting the weak point like you normally do keep cutting off his legs. if you cut all of them before beating him you get the special version of his weapon.

I don't know about the other 3, cause I haven't reached them yet.
