well shit. Looking at the steam stats for it and it's not looking great. 1400 player all time peak is ridiculous. But it seems to be somewhat stable. Still, only a few more players than RO2 and that's because most RO2 players are probably playing RS2.

It's not noticeable most the time since long range combat is who shoots first wins. But if you do close range engagements you can see how bad it can be at times.

Also the kill feed is broken to hell. Multiple times I didn't realize I had gotten kills cause they never showed up but when I checked the scoreboard it showed I got them.

I might be but in roughly 2k hours playing RO games, I don't think I've ever been in a situation where I wanted to place an inaccurate marker ~30m away from me without peeking my head out and then turn and walk away. Maybe it could be okay when retreating from a cap point but there aren't currently any territory maps where the US is on defense. Even then it's still easier to just press F+right mouse.

The majority of the RO1 community moved to RO2 years ago. It's a bit of a shame since there were a lot of great RO1 mods that will never be played again. You'll find some Russians playing Ostfront (vanilla) and there's still people playing Darkest Hour (most popular RO1 mod) but the only populated server is run by the 29th fucking asshole division.

I imagine most RO2 players will migrate to RS2. You can play it if you want, there's always at least one active NA or EU server and it's more polished and offers more content than RS2 does currently.

RO1 is really old, people mostly stopped playing it 15 years ago to play a mod an even more hardcore mod called "Darkest Hour".

RO2 is ok. RS1 is probably the most active but don't expect 64 player servers like RS2.

Game is pretty sick
It's definitely frustrating to die repeatedly though, particularly if you die, spawn on a squad leader and die again instantly. Beyond things like that happening, it's pretty fun.

There are lots of whiners in the game. Can't wait for full release so they are all gone. Very fun when you have competent people in the roles of commander, squad leader and pilot.

My biggest gripe is just how shit the UI is. To access things like muting people, it's very poorly implemented.

I'm top fragging with a shotgun nearly every game. Snipers aren't op in the slightest. Infact I don't think I've ever been killed from over 100 metres away.
Most maps have lots of cover and areas for you to sneak behind the enemy. I've managed to get a shotty kill at 102 metres, which so far is my proudest achievement.

I honestly think Rising Storm 1 is in a much more refined and fun state than Rising Storm 2 (contrary to what I've heard people say during RS2 matches). I don't really like the way people can just be arbitrarily made SLs. There's plenty of shitty SLs in RO2 but at the very least they made a conscious decision to become one.

I think there should be a system where if you're doing well as a leader (i.e. spawning lots and dying little) more spots can open up in your squad. It's kind of lame trying to play as a dedicated spawner when you only have 5 guys to spawn

The single most helpful thing I can recommend is to rebind your map key to something easily accessible and check it constantly. Your map makes it very easy to see where artillery is, where your teammates are concentrated, where the enemy is when the UAV is online, etc. Try to stay with your teammates but also beware of flanks, if your team is light on the flank go and reinforce it. Don't push ahead by yourself, wait until there are a bunch of teammates going into the objective and go with them.

Getting gud in Red Orchestra is entirely about positioning and situational awareness imo and the map makes that a lot easier.

In RO2, it eventually got a good amount of maps, but only after several years of both dev made maps being made and a few custom maps being added to the base game. Which is a shame, since the game really should stand up on its own two feet rather than rely on user content.

The way I see it, US SLs actually have to hang back and stay alive if they want to be a useful SL. If they get killed, any utility they could have offered, either for marking targets or respawning their team, is lost until they can get back into position. With tunnels, you just plop that shit down and forget its even there. You can put it down on a flank or behind enemy lines and you don't have to worry so much about staying alive.

The Japanese actually had a similar mechanic in early builds of RS1. Japs actually had several tunnel spawn points on the flanks of the map that Americans could destroy with charges. They were removed because it made the game laughably lopsided in favor of the Japs.

The Northern grunts can still choose a folding stock AK by default while the American grunt doesn't have a folder or sidearm, so the North would still have the advantage in most tunnel fights.

The idea that I can use a Mosin Nagant in a tunnel but they can't use an M3 is pretty silly.

The tunnels are pretty poorly done anyways, and the lighting maps are complete ass. The designed rooms are aight, but it's very clear that the tunnels are just copy pasted meshes that connect together with an unnatural smoothness. There is a method to use if you want a class. Spawn on the opposite faction. That way you have no load times when switching sides and can get your class.
