I love BG2 but it's hardly even an RPG, unless you define "RPG" as a thing with stats and levels. Most quests boil down to going on location and killing a thing, your character is set with almost no wiggle room to roleplay, your companions get one obligatory personal quest and thats it. Plus, the whole Biowarish "press 1 to do a really good and moral thing, or press 2 to be a fucking cunt" feature that made it's way in all their games since. Gothic 2 completely shits all over it when it comes to roleplaying.

How is the roleplaying in Gothic? I never understood what kind of game it is.

I played one Gothic clone, I think it was Risen. I liked the first part a little bit, but once the world opened up, it just became a shitty action game.

I want most of what I do to be talking and exploring and stuff.

I'm not going to insult you, because that way you'd never give it another chance. Try to power through the beginning, after a few hours the controls work. They worked back then, no reason for them not to work today.
What you miss is one of the only few good open world games ever made. There is almost no filler content, lots of interesting locations and actual discoveries to be made.
Lot of meaningful interaction and pretty much the best factions a game has ever had.

Gothic 2 then proceeds to iron out most of the flaws the original Gothic had and going from Gothic to Gothic 2 is absolutely amazing.

You literally have to be underage to think that. The game came out in 2002, animations were still wonky and never really a focus at the time, and this was a fuckhuge, handcrafted game that was enormously ambitious for its time. There were and still are tons of bugs in the game, animations were the least of their concerns.

Plus, it isn't a fucking action RPG like retards that complain about it think it is. It rolls dice in the background, the first person, real-time perspective is just for immersion. And it was fucking amazing at the time.

Gothic 2 has heaps of non-combat related context. I don't know, I've gotten to the first city multiple times but I always end up dropping it in there. The game is just so poorly paced and a nightmare to control, like haven't the devs ever seen a mouse? It baffles me how it came to be.

Nothing really interesting happened in the first few hours except talking to ridiculously poorly voice-acted NPCs and completing fetch quests so I had no hook to continue forwards.

About the fetch quests: They are part of the charme, your guy starts out as the lowest shitter but slowly climbs up to be fucking awesome.

BG1 is bland, but knows what it wants to be and handles its story and characters well. BG2 was a setting-hopping, mood-flipping retardotron of a campaign where you chase a cringy emo wizard in order to stop him from killing people who are such complete assholes and imbeciles that they all actually deserve it, and their gods too. Also you can eventually turn into a hydralisk but then have to give money to a church in order to fix your reputation. Because the map wasn't geographically connected and everything after you rescue Imoen is just a straight run to the end, adding nothing to the game after except 3 small, mostly empty filler areas. Athkatla wasn't geographically connected either. Half the shit you have to do is in Athkatla so the other areas only have 1 major quest

It was pretty cool to lure that Mages Guild teleporter girl from Balmora to my manor. Had shit conjuration skill but I cast enough fortify speed spells on her to get there in the duration of a single domination scroll. Imo old camp first and then new camp is pretty canon in g1. Then militia in g2 because it's the most convenient choice (fits the hero), and then Xardas because in the end you're effectively the champion of Adanos more than Innos or Beliar anyway.

I like that part. You can absolutely fuck a lot of things up, but you don't actually need a guide to figure out what you were doing wrong. The next time around you'll know not to make those mistake and you'll be fine. A lot of people restart their first palythrough because they fuck almost everything up. Then their second playthrough is much easier decisionwise.

Gorn is the only important character with the mercs, and their faction is the least straightforward one to join and the least likely from a roleplaying perspective to actually bring you to Hagen. I mean they have fucking Lee at the helm, it's a guarantee of nothing getting done, people getting restless, and the fool getting kicked the fuck out.
On the other hand joining the militia is easy and brings you straight to Hagen.
Hell if you went mage in g1 even monastery makes more sense than mercs.

The game lets you draw your own conclusion whether you like this or not, but considering that the actual objectively real Gods in this game wanted the NH to have that thing makes the paladins and the mages cunts. They were standing in the way of the Gods's will and ignoring their prophecy.

Yeah, but they don't fucking know it. Which is actually a reason why the monastery can be argued as a logical path: they're the most likely to recognize the NH's role in the war of the gods. A shitty merc opposing the king's (who is also a chosen of Innos, mind you, so the mercs are literally Beliar's unwitting servants just like the swamp camp) servants is a bit hard to recognize as a prophecised hero by comparison.

Nah anon, Xardas can't send you to the monastery directly, you need some level of validation from someone else. Serpentes or whatever his name is already suspicious of you after you become a full mage, nevermind if you just come straight down the mountain from the demon built tower.

I loved Gothic 1, but I don't know what I'm supposed to do in Gothic 2. I get 1-2 shot by everything with the best armor I can get. I finally got through the portal, which I assume is the DLC, but I had to kite one of the guys from the farm to the golem thing. I don't know if you're supposed to let the farmers kill it or what. The other two I had help from Lares and one was taken by the paladins. Kind of strange design. It feels like I'm playing the game wrong because I can't tell what is NotR and what isn't.

Looks really good with mods, though.

I can't believe I never actually realized Xardas is blind.

For all Gothic lover, the closest thing to Gothic i can recommend is SureAI's mor for Skyrim Enderal or mod for Oblivion Nehrim.

I mean looks ofthe world and engine mechanics are same of the base game, but leveling system, story, music and not to forget disable level scalling enemies, make it a good game or mod tehnically.

This is comming from someone who finished Enderal, and currently playing Nehrim, while later comes before the first, you will not lose much on the story. Though you should give NEhrim a try first, if you manage to revert back from Skyrim to Oblivion engine, i promise you it's a blasts.

The X-box port of it was very awful and it gave the game a lot of bad reviews. It was the first console port of the devs and they fucked it up completely. They got better with Risen 2 and 3 though. Hopefully they'll do a decent one with Elex too.

I should have mentioned that you would start skilling up bow eventually. He wanted a fast way to get strong and going for a fast 30% 1h skill with dex weapons is a good way to do it. Just equip strength rings/belt and you can kill a lot of things in chapter one. Especially if you use all strength increasing items as you get them and save the dex/bow ones for later.
