It really does feel like that. It has so many marks of an amateur production. Just look at the reuse of the same basic enemy squad through the whole thing. So much of it feels like it's designed around the engine too. Like, there are so many details on the walls which you can actually jump on and interact with, but they just seem to be there for no real reason and there's no clear sense of whether they are deliberately there to allow you to navigate in alternate ways or if the level designers just didn't care.

The most interesting thing that happened to me while playing was no realizing that you could aim, and so i ended up finding weird alternate ways of doing tasks in the first world that I assumed were what you were supposed to do. Everything after was far more straightforward and the game barely has much sense of progression.

Yooka and Laylee needed something else to differentiate themselves from other mascot characters. Honestly just giving Yooka a Hawaiian shirt and Laylee something like an eyepatch would've gone a long way to making them more fun to look at and not boring.

The worlds were way too massive and not fun to traverse. The ability meter is fucking retarded and should've been done away with the second that somebody on the dev team was playing, ran out of power, and stopped having fun. You can get everywhere in the game using these ultra long jumps but none of it feels satisfying. Also combat is shit and is just you twirling around and avoiding all damage.

Why are all the cutscenes unskippable? This was something that was included with Banjo Tooie, an N64 platformer, there is no reason not to include it in current year.

Entire pacing was fucked by it's false nonlinearity. You -could- do the levels and expansions in any order, but you're only punishing yourself if you don't rush through all the worlds collecting the bare minimum to get the moves first (prime offender: getting all the way through the iceometric palace only to find you need invisibility). You then have to show some self-restraint and avoid breaking the game wide open with flight but I found it difficult to give a shit at that point.

I've not finished yet but I've been enjoying it so far but there's definitely some flaws. The levels are a bit to large at times and it makes them tedious to navigate sometimes. Also, the quizzes. Fuck the quizzes. Who thought that was a good idea

It feels like they first designed the maps to look good, then tried to create puzzles around then, and not the other way around.

Nothing went wrong. It's a nice semi open world platformer made by people who've been in the business for decades, which definitely shows. Playing it right now and really liking it.
