SFV is an early access rushed scam that sucks in almost every department minus arguably animations;
GGXrd is good-ish but has terrible animations for 2017 standards and the online playerbase is almost non-existent;
KI is whatever;
MKX and I2 are NRS games, which means good netcode and single player content but wack-ish gameplay and terrible animations;
T7 isn't out yet but I still think T6 ruined the franchise.

This current generation of fighting games is ass. I still occasionally boot up some older games and have genuine fun with them, but I find really hard to have fun with the newer ones. Because they're trash.

I love the genre, but them making it more accessible is bad.

Of course I want more people to enjoy playing, but when you literally remove things that make a fighting game what it is so that it's basically just a hack n slash, it makes it less fun for both sides.

What I personally find fun in fighting games is that starting from the bottom aspect. Where you're new to a certain game's mechanics and get stomped online, but getting stomped is just a learning experience. And you build a strategy against theirs and grow as a player. Share tips with the community, watch top players and copy one or two things they do, it feels like a real progression. But with the (sadly) most popular FG on the market, Street Fighter V, the way the characters are balanced feels more like a MOBA than a fighting game. It's all simplified combos and matchups are pretty much law. This character counters this one. So almost no amount of training you put in can help you against every character. Sure there can be bad matchups, but working around them and thinking in new perspectives to win is fun for me. Not this rock paper scizzors game.

So I still like Fighting Games, just not Capcom's trash. MVCI will have the same issues. If you want an easy to get into Fighting Game, play Guilty Gear, KOF, something else. Because SFV is accessible in all the wrong ways.

There are not a lot of dynamic elements in a fighting game. There's nuance in spacing, timing, a large variety of moves, etc, but that stuff is for the most part irrelevant when your ability to employ tactics based on that sort of knowledge is more up to chance than choice. More importantly, fighting games suck online. The speed, connection stability and amount of information they need to transmit in order to maintain a smooth game is beyond what most households actually have from their service providers. There is no magical "netcode" that will solve this fundamental problem, no synchronization, no GGPO, nothing. Until the infrastructure for internet connectivity has everyone in the world with a beam of light, fighting games will suffer.

Fighting games will never gain the sort of traction that other genres like FPS or MOBAs or MMORPGs have because those other games can work with far less bandwidth and still offer a smooth experience. Any other kind of game can work with approximations and limited updates per second, interpolating it all together with client-server checks and individual rollbacks so that even a Brazilian furry with 300 ping is no more or less advantaged than his opponent Bulgarian cigarette seller with 5 ping.

What exactly is different about SFV that makes it uniquely bad? I don't see it.

Every fighting game suffers from exactly that thing of X character having a poor matchup against Y character. If anything, SFV is one of the more balanced of the lot, only a few characters lacking options will suffer against those with everything; most other fighting games have a select few characters so far above the rest that it's absurd. The only fighters that can truly overcome this issue are the ones with teams like KOF or Skullgirls where you can make a well rounded or specialist team.

Every fighting game is about guessing which move is going to break through their guard / guarding against the next attack you think is coming. Every fighting game is going to give each character a few good normals that link into their best combos that they repeat endlessly for a win.

Speaking of few good normals, would a 6-button fighter like Street Fighter suffer at all if the number of buttons was decreased to 4 (CAPvsSNK did it, seemed to be just fine) or even 3? For the most part, you'd do no more than cut out some of the redundant, shitty normals in favor of ones that were worth using.
