Usually the opposite way around for me, if /v/ has a strong response to a game then it either means that game has a very niche fanbase or its a very popular game and people just want their opinions to be known by being extra loud. People have huge responses to the Souls games. Objectively, they are all at the very least pretty alright games which will either appeal or not appeal to your personal tastes. But they aren't bad by any means. However form the way /v/ talks about them, they might as well be Atari's E.T.

If /v/ has pretty middling opinions about something, then it's usually actually great or just horrible. These are usually just passing opinions about games that actually clicked with someone so sometimes an anon will say they enjoyed some trashy weeb game that is clearly a 3/10 or they will praise some indie game like Hollow Knight that gets like a 50 or 60 reply thread before dying out.

I used to trust it quite a lot. Despite a lot of shit being thrown around, it used to be that /v/'s taste could have been relied on: it used to be pretty good, in majority. In rec. threads, you'd see 90% of good, good recommendations. When something bigger (or even smaller) came out, there usually was a little bit of bullshit bubbling around it, but unless it was one of those really big AAA titles that got some "/v/ culture" bullshit tacked on, you'd still see in majority reasonable and reliable judgements around.

Not anymore though. Rec. threads almost don't exist anymore, and if they appear they die after a couple of posts. And the most common and general judgements thrown around, the majority of them are shit. Too much weird game-unrelated bitterness, too much parroting angry shit somebody made up because "fuck games, am I right?" Too much political shit and platform shit (seriously, platform shit is becoming an increasing issue around here. It's not like consolewars were not a thing, but the actual impact and effect it has on opinions being thrown around here is growing. More and more people seem to judge games by platform loyalty standards with complete seriousness).

Between the "board culture bitterness" and the just utter, complete lack of interest in games from any other standpoint than an identity one:
