You need a degree in Physics to be able to play it, can't even get to the Mun.

I really like this game but the developers are huge pieces of shit that deserve no money

Gimmie a second to pull an up to date copy from a private tracker and make a magnet out of it.

Getting to Mun is easy, just get to a (non-retrograde) low Kerbin orbit, and start your Munar transfer burn when the Mun appears over the horizon.
Make sure you use the map view to keep from overshooting. Minimus is actually easier to get to and from.

Launch windows for targets farther out are a little more tricky but are usually just view from above, launch when Kerbin and the target are separated at these angles.
>>
>>377501376
>Minimus is actually easier to get to and from.

Only if you're aware to launch at a different inclination which I think a decent few people don't know about and end up having to correct their inclination at a later point leading to some deltaV loss.

Landing on the mun is always the worst when you get used to ez minmus landings.
>>
>>377501217
>but the developers are huge pieces of shit that deserve no money
Why though?
>>
>>377501376
Eh I can get to Mun and Minmus but I can never return or land on them, I always run into fuel issues and the wiki is shit tier when it comes to rocket design

Actually piloting the rocket is simple enough, I just can't make a rocket that can either land on or return from Mun/Minmus

Eh unfortunately I uninstalled the game in my anger

But I didn't even have a lander, it was a Mk1 Capsule, with a T800 fuel tank+reliant engine, and to the T800 tank I coupled 8 T800+Mainsail engine stacks
>>
so what's more effective for return missions from other planets, using a lightweight disposable lander and the actual RV stay's in orbit or sending a heavy lander with onboard mining and fuel converter?
>>
>>377501728
Doing things the Apollo way is easier. Practice doing orbital intercepts in low Kerbin orbit. Do two launches if you need to.
>>
>>377501976
>But I didn't even have a lander
well, that's your issue there
the more powerful rockets have a lot of mass to them, it's much more efficient to not land them if you're set on using them and instead use a lightweight lander and later redock with your rocket
>>
>>377501976

Everything can be a lander. You just need some imagination when building your shit.
>>377501983
Depends on what you prefer or what you're doing but lightweight stuff is better .you just need to good at intercepts.
>>377502097
He does not need a lander. That's actually my least priority to research when starting a fresh game.

There's a lot about this game that I don't understand, but getting to Mun isn't that hard. It's been awhile since I played but basically you want to build a staged rocket that's all fuel. The tri-adapter is good. I think you can do something like: command module -> small fuel -> small booster -> separator -> fuel -> fuel -> fuel -> booster -> separator -> tri-adapter -> 3x (fuel -> fuel -> fuel -> booster). Burn straight up, and when you run out of fuel keep coasting upwards. As soon as you're about to fall, jettison stage 1 and burn until you're reaching the apogee of your orbit (the apex). At that point, turn the rocket parallel to the planet and burn to expand the orbit around the planet. The UI will tell you which way to burn (you're looking for anterograde). Now you have a rocket in orbit. Keep burning until the orbit intersects with Mun, then do an orbital transfer by burning retrograde to shrink the orbit around Mun.

At some point you probably have to jettison stage 2. If memory serves you will need to jettison stage 2 before transferring to Mun's orbit. If you want to land on Mun, use the exact same design but put another stage separator and movement thrusters on the command module. You will want to shrink the orbit around Mun while moving parallel to the surface. To come in for a landing, just burn thrusters in the opposite direction to slow your descent.

From there you can experiment with landing rovers on Mun or landing a relaunchable lander, then launching from the surface of Mun and rendezvousing with the orbiting rocket before returning to the Kerbal launch pad.

if you are too stupido to get shit right just follow these ez steps
>don't play career you cuntvag
>play science on easy like a bitch
>get KerbalEngineer mod, it shows you your DeltaV
>deltaV is not speed you fuck, it's your maximum potential change in speed
>space travel is fucking different you wankstain
>use https://13375.de/KSPDeltaVMap/
>basic math, add the deltaV from surface of kerbin to surface of whatever, then surface of whatever to kerbin low orbit
>add some more deltaV because you're not optimal, idiot
>don't go over 300m/s in atmosphere you mongoloid, you're wasting fuel
>learn the optimal trajectory and speed
>actually just ignore that and get MechJeb and use autopilot so the game plays itself
>save you idiot, F5 is for "quicksave", F9 is for "oh mama i have fucked up"
>use the manouver editor, jesus fuck
>save before landing on mun, crash into mun - now you know how high the ground is
>land that bitch
>fap
>get a sub-orbit
>aim for the earth
>youre now buring in the atmosphere you idiot you were supposed to slow down before entering
>try again idiot
>?????
>PROFIT
>>
The worst part of this game is how badly optimized it is. Does it still have random crashes?
>>
>>377505231
Only if you install shitloads of mods which is the only way to play so yes
Also, it's made in unity so they literally cannot do anything to optimize it since Unity doesn't support C++ pointers

Performance is still limited by PhysX only allowing one physics thread per craft, but the 64-bit version works now, so there's no more memory limit crashes anymore.
The original devs have all left, but the new crew has done a pretty good job polishing it. Crashes are pretty rare unless they're caused by some janky mod you're using.

>>
>>377500849
Now you know where the term 'rocket scientist' comes from
>>
>>377500849
1. Install Kerbal Engineer Redux
2. Build a rocket with about 8000 Delta-V and a thrust-to-weight ratio of at least 0.3(on Kerbin) for the stages that will be landing/taking off from the Mun.
3. Launch into equatorial low Kerbin orbit.
4. Wait until you see the Mun rising on the horizon.
5. Burn pro-grade until your apoapsis touches the Mun's orbit.
6. Coast until you enter the Mun's gravity well

Watch this to learn the lingo and basic concepts.

Is it really that hard? I spent a few hours playing it. Seemed simple enough getting the staging and tubing right such that you can have staggered rocket stage ejection and then pointing the nose spinward to get into orbit.

My actual physics degree didn't help with much else that I tried. The hardest part was getting the rockets flyable such that the nose wouldn't drift in the wrong direction and cause the whole rocket to start spinning.

That is contracting work in general: do you job, and get out.

Half the problem with modern software development is technical wizards with the business acumen of a lemming.
Not trying to blame the victim here, but it when it comes to being a contractor or dealing with work of that nature:
1) Have to know the people you're getting into bed with.
2) Have to know when to walk away
That isn't to say the people behind KSP shouldn't get fucked for this, they can and should.

All you need is a big engine, a load of fuel and capacity to make something aerodynamic. If you want to start minmaxing you gonna have to start doing some simple equations though. But even there's probably tools online which basically do that for you.

He only uses cheats and save states to save time when making videos.

After you've played so many hours, the basic gameplay of waiting for launch windows, getting to orbit, and doing hohmann transfers is no longer challenging.
Building wacky/complex stuff is still fun though, so you spend your time designing stuff and then just cheat it to your destination to see how it performs.
