Yes, Vesperia has broken shit like that too (fast cast Rita, infinite buff duration Estelle, Yuri infinite combos with "forced downed enemies to stand" bullshit thrown in) but you have to get to basically the end of the game to use it

Additionally, playing Beseria optimally involves A LOT of menu time, swapping gear to learn now passives, managing your inventory because of random item abilities, disassembling and upgrading gear, managing expeditions, creating new combos every fucking boss fight so you can abuse weekness chains.
They even knew there was a ton of menuing because they gave Velvet a fucking title for time in the menu, it's absurd.

CC doesn't fight against you. You will have all the resources in each fight at your disposal. With TP you might have 0. CC also makes for a natural combo progression so you don't need hard combo limits like in Zestiria and Berseria.

I do agree that the start of Graces can be a pain but only on your first playtrough and if you don't use the DLC items that increase your CC. Next playtroughs are much better.

I think Zestiria, did a much better job of subversion of character tropes. In fact, I'd even go as far as saying that he created a better party of "anti-Heroes" than the anti-heroes in Berseria(Exaggerating a bit but you get my point) In Zestiria, Sorey was somewhat of an inverted trope of the "do all good" hero. His code was to save all from Malevolence, yet ended up failing in the end. Not only that, we see that the Villain of the story, despite being more or less "same-y" as the rest of the villains in JRPGs, was the product of the HERO Micheal due to his own suffering and anger. Zestiria might have lacked in certain departments of villains but I think the writers did a decent job in thematic subversion and expectations. Heldalf was just a passive villain who didn't want to live anymore but couldn't die due to the Micheal's curse on him.

I feel the two are interchangeable at times, but I think Hearts R's gameplay edges out Abyss' just because of how much fucking fun it is. Hearts R also has one of the most entertaining party members in the series, both in banter and interactions and playability. Frankly no. ToB isn't a monument of subversion with an incredibly original hero. Velvet has an incredibly safe character arc (Betrayed with a thrist for revenge, do bad things at first but learn that it's bad after bonding with other people). Past 5 hours, the "i'll do anything to get my revenge" doesn't even apply her decision and she does what any random protag would do.
Even her supposed edgyness is really low key.
Sorey on the other end is much more of a twist on the chosen one archetype, by making him a recognized public position, and having to deal with this new fame.

This is how you can tell someone is a fujo. Everything you said is wrong.

Velvet isn't original but she's far from safe, especially compared to Sorey. You say she does bad things but learns it's bad after bonding, but what actually happens is that she knows it's bad but just doesn't care. As she starts to recover from her revenge spell a bit, she becomes more aware of it but is still set on her goal. She never quite does what any random protag would do, even near the end, in part because of Berseria's more gray morality and there being no ideal solution.

Her 'edgyness' becoming more low key actually separates her from your standard edgelord. It fits with her gradual recovery from the time spent in the pit.

Sorey isn't really a twist at all. Yes he has a public position but he's still ultimately your standard nice guy and as much of a moralfag as allowed to be. The only real twist on him (because you're talking about his position, not his personality) is that he's gay.

And no, Berseria is just better than Zestira in general. Period. Not saying Berseria is perfect but it never dips as low as, say, dancing around the story to justify Rose.

I have been on this exact line of thought for a long time since the release of Berseria. I had assumed that they would possibly not delve into the typical "They are fighting people worse than us" but sadly, Bamco didn't capitalize on the unique potential of Berseria's story. It wasn't disappointing, just a realization that they played safe(which I expected).

Despite me having the critical feelings on Berseria's story, I cannot be too angered because(again) of the in-depth, potent and poetic Zestiria intertwining. Arthur may have been all evil, but when looking at his story, you see that he faces the same struggles that all Shepards face. Berseria's story had a few interesting themes and story points, but ultimately went safe on it, Just like the entirety of this game, removing Zestiria's unique additions like seamless transitions and open world for a more standard design.

I'm not sure they can reproduce good chemistry between the characters just because one comes back again.

Admitedly, Berseria had a lot of positive reception over in Japan, so chances are, the next game, whatever it may be, will likely sell a bit better. Berseria would have sold worse regardless of setting because of Zestiria's crappyness and people losing trust in the franchise as a whole, even if it took place in a new setting.

Now they just need to make sure the next game doesn't suck, and has a good cast and story like Berseria, alongside all the other good stuff it did compared to that game.
