No. Considering Twisted Metal, Road Rash, a fuckton of shitty MK clones, nonsense shovelware and vaporware titles took place in the 90's that consisted of the most violent Era, it's a joke to even consider by any stretch that games nowadays even come close to how bad they used to be.

MK is a parody of itself twice over (too silly and over-the-top to be taken seriously anymore) and Kratos is a caricature of absurdity in his own story past the first game so badly that Asura in Asura's Wrath pretty much did Kratos better while being more over-the-top without needing to swing an m-rating around.

A more accurate description would be that Gen x developers realized subtlety and nuance go further than blatant and blunt "awesome extreme to the max" when handled properly.

This is why you're struggling to hold back tears in the walking dead game at a certain point and not so much when Sindel single-handedly slaughters almost all of earthrealm defenders in Mortal Kombat 9.
