Well, the "strict" definition of a difference between a wyvern and a dragon (which kinda started this whole trend) actually comes from English Heraldry rules. Where strict and explicit definitions were a necessity.

It is of course silly when it comes to fantastic genre fiction.

Could we try to make one for it then? Why not standardize a word for these lizard-like fantasy creatures with four legs and with two legs? Dark Souls did it too.

I mean who gives a fuck, go ahead and reverse drake & dragon then, I'm not that serious about this discussion, but I find it extremely baffling that people are somehow "against" coming up and maintaining definitions for things, be it fantasy or not. It's fucking stupid and ironic considering you're able to talk with other people on the internet exactly thanks to that because of languages and letters.
>>
>>377494697
The small, yet relevant difference between describing a dog and defining a dragon is that dogs exist, and therefor relatively objective description can be done.
Dragons don't exist (outside of secondary-use name application such as Comodo Dragons), there for there is no such thing as a precise description of one.
>>
The norse never had such restrictive definitions of dragons.

>>377494356

>>377494815

>>
>>377494741
No, it's a dragon.
>>
>>377494776
>Why not standardize a word for these lizard-like fantasy creatures with four legs and with two legs?
Why would you do that, since there is no need in precision in descriptions of what are surreal symbolic representations of human fears and dreams? These definitions do not add anything, they aren't useful to anything, all they do is further restrict imagination in a genre that is already creatively exhausted and overly restricted by genre clichés and tropes.
>>

And why should I put their definitions above the rest?
Whenever someone tells me that a wyvern isn't a dragon I just tell them to fuck off. I don't care if the English don't consider them dragons. You didn't invent dragons.
>>
>>377494303

You're right of course. For instance, my dog just happens to have a scaly hide imbued with primordial magic energies that makes it impervious to all weapons of man, as well as a tendency to occasionally belch searing hot flame.

He's a labrador.

>>377494437
Specifically, you spectacularly failed to make yourself understood because your grasp of the English language is downright pitiful.
>>
>>377495136
>And why should I put their definitions above the rest?
I'm not saying you should. I'm explaining how such differenciations come into existence in the first place. It was for pragmatic reasons: accurate image-to-text transcription of heraldic symbols, which does require precision since confusing it may lead to all kinds of administrative issues.

I also posted this: >>377494904

Real souls dragons have multiple sets of wings.
>>
>>377495472
>Why does the idea of Wyverns being Dragons bother some people so much?
People trying to find a sense of superiority in their knowledge, regardless of how impractical it is. "Knowing" (that is: insisting) that dragon and a wyvern are two different things makes them feel like they are "Experts" on something, and conflating the two things invalidates the knowledge they are already invested in. That makes them uncomfortable, calls their interests and the effort they spent on learning shit like this into question.

Some semi-autistic people also just really, really like their rules, because rules imply predictability and security, and being an autist basically being consistently assaulted by the world that seems threatening them. It's why they tend to cling to arbitrary rules.
>>
I thought the big difference between wyverns and dragons was that only dragons breathed fire.

I remember there were some huge debate in Sweden about this recently. Some army squad or something had a crest with a lion with a dick and balls on and feminists wanted to castrate it. However in heraldry, giving someone a banner with a lion without a dick and balls were to imply that they were turncoats/traitors/cowards/etc.

sure, in it's own universe one can have it's own definition of what a dragon is, but in universes that clearly use euromedieval mythology as their bases the most obvious thing is to call the 4 legged one a dragon, the 2 legged one a wyvern, the wingless a drake and the limbless a serpent

And you forgot the the explicit definition is PURELY for the purpose of clarity in heraldry, and has no other function, and was not really imposed or used anywhere else. As for mythological image, that does not specify jack shit.

Forcing this strict distinction into genre fiction, even if its based in European folklore, makes absolutely no sense. No actual european folklore or mythology provides such strict distinctions.
>>
>>377496898
Norse myths tells of dragons that do not fit British heraldry.
Asian myths does the same.

Actually. Even heraldry isn't definitive. There are other instances of [symbol of generic thing] and [symbol of subset of generic thing], and then they make distinctions between them because such distinctions are required for heraldry. But it doesn't really change anything else.

If the heraldry was definitive Asian dragons would have never been called dragons to begin with. You're literally just rewriting history here trying to claim otherwise.

The point is not about things having definitions (even if they are fictional). It's about some parts of the definition being relevant or irrelevant. Yes, Minotaur is being defined by being half-bull half-human.
But a dragon is defined by vaguely lizard or snake-like appearance and great strength, not by the number of legs or wings. It's as simple as that.

No, they just did not. There has never been an "official" definition, there has never been any NEED for anything like an official definition: there has never been any actual body of authority to IMPOSE such definition. Just as there isn't a fucking official definition for an elf, or a drowner, or a spirit, or a specter. Who, when and why would make such fucking things?

I don't give a fuck that YOU need things to be "easier to understand", nobody else does. And making an official definition of a dragon outside of a specific fucking fiction does not make anything easier to understand. Number of legs does not actually change the semiotic value or principles of a dragon. It's still a symbolic image conveying the same amalgamation of very much the same sets of fucking meanings.

Sure. I just brought it up because of the whole hobbit movie adaptation shitfest. With people yelling that Smaug wasn't a dragon in it.
>>
>>377499196
Oh right, my mistake. But that's what I mean.
Its the wings that are more often missing, rather than the wings. So if we are to find what people thought a dragon would be like back then, lets consider the wings as just as important as having either two or four legs.

So from my search results, in terms of accuracy, six limbs dragon (four legs and wings) is still closer to what people thought back then than four limbs; wyvern (two legs and two wings).

>>377499232
Because if you just look for images its rather meaningless. But if people wore the dragons on their banners and armories then its more substantial.
I would trust Europeans to know what a dragon is since even Vlad the Impaler was called the Dragon.
>>
>>377499230

So what makes you think that wyverns and drakes aren't sub species/categories/derivatives of dragons. Also why wouldn't "dragon" also be a term like "feline" or "canine"?
So a drake is still a dragon and a dragon is still a drake.
Also dragons aren't exclusive to britbong or european myths so maybe not every creator bases their fantasy work on these either.

So is that manga just gore focused?

So OP basically fell asleep during the intro video and therefore missed an important aspect of the lore.

What else is new?

The difference is that people all over the world have never called harpies "angels".
But people all over the world throughout the ages, have called wyverns and other large lizards "dragons".

Or you're just a big fag who gets all your misinformation from D&D. You probably believe in fucking studded leather armor too.

Up until the 16th century there was no difference between a two legged dragon and a 4 legged dragon, and wyvern was just a synonym for dragon. Only in the UK in the 16th century did suddenly some autists want to make a distinction, and wyverns were still seen as just a specific type of dragon. In the rest of Europe there was no difference.

Having a poison stinger is entirely a an ignorant fa/tg/uy invention in the 70s.

Did you know a Dragon was the first "boss fight" in video games? Gold Dragon from a1975 DnD videogame guarded a magic orb needed to complete the game. Now isn't that Drag-gone-cool?

They're not fantasy but mythology and as such have a correct and incorrect usage.
>>
>>377512626
All the definitions given within this thread are from heraldry, not mythology. Mythology doesn't state shit about how many limbs a dragon has - not that mythology typically specifically defines things in the first place, shit's fluid as hell.

What games do dragons best?

Will there ever be a good dragon game? One where you actually play a dragon, that isn't spyro, or some shit that falls back on the half-dragon shit that accounts for your MC being human 99% of the game?

Skyrim. The dragon fights are so epic. I can't wait to fight dragons on the go in the definite version of The Elder Scrolls: V - Skyrim, on the Nintendo Switch
