I regularly sit in a college lounge, or desk at my house. Putting the switch on a flat surface seems like it would be comfy, but due to it's shit battery life I'd want to be charging it all the time.

There just aren't enough games for it right now really. I'd wait until the Holiday season or later. I got mine on launch day and it spends a lot of time docked and off. In theory it shouldn't be too hard to have a charging port on the top and a docking port on the bottom. The 3DS had the special contacts specifically for its dock, just nobody bothered using it.
It seems like the inside of the Switch is a lot more densely packed than the 3DS though, so they might struggle to fit an extra port on it.

I already have a Wii U, so that investment is already paid for. I also have a Pro Controller for the Wii U and 3 wii motes + classic pros, so the investment on the controllers is already complete for 4 people to play. So that argument is out.

Ditto for MK8. Is the new battle mode really worth a 300 dollar purchase, plus 3 Pro controllers at 70 dollars per (I've used a single joycon - its shit and I wouldn't subjugate anyone I liked to that), AND 60 bucks for the game itself (570 dollars total)?

As for Splatoon, I didn't pick it up for the Wii U, and I have no interest in it regarding the Switch. I'm not into online shooters, and haven't been since Warhawk for the PS3.

People who were early adopters of the Wii U/bought it halfway through its lifespan (I'm guessing you got yours in 2914 going by the games you bought it for) got burned so badly by what a failure it was in late 2015 (apart from Splatoon and Xenoblade X, great games right there) and last year that they probably won't buy a Switch for year or maybe won't at all.
People who bought it late last year will also feel betrayed if they bought it for Mario Kart, Breath of the Wild, etc so they won't be buying it period.
Their target audience is basically anyone who didn't own a Wii U.
