DMC3 was a soft reboot after DMC2's poor reception, and retconned a number of minor details from DMC1.
Honestly the more confusing thing is Rebellion and Yamato. They're heirlooms, but also stated to be connected to Dante and Vergil's inner power, but also they're Devil Arms, which implies they're the souls of very powerful demons, rather than being forged.

Actually, Rebellion was introduced in DMC 2 and Yamato was in the first game. It is Sparda's sword when you play as him, but the team originally designed it for Vergil (because Kamiya wanted a samurai sword wielding character).

I would think that, if anything, Force Edge might be formed from Sparda's soul, since wielding it Dante's Devil Trigger takes his appearence, just like with Ifrit and Alastor; Yet, Yamato is still considered a Devil Arm in those games.

So, it's likely that a Devil Arm doesn't need to form from a demon' soul. Keep in mind that we never see where Gilgamesh and Lucifer came from in 4. Maybe they could be forged from a part of a demon's body, or something like that?

I read that originally the DMC4 Devil Arms were going to get bosses, which makes sense when you consider the unfinished state.

It's also true that Force Edge/Sparda is also Sparda's wielded sword in addition to being the manifestation of his own power. Which can apparently be stored in the sword separate from his body and sealed away.

So I guess hypothetically, Dante and Vergil can form their own soul-sword Devil Arms, and Rebellion and Yamato are like catalysts for their demonic power?
It's also interesting that in DMC1 and 3, Devil Arms affect Dante's appearance, but in DMC4, they don't, suggesting his inner demon power is growing stronger.

You know, I always felt like the sword wasn't really the most important part, but the amulets themselves kinda grow over the sword since it looks organic.

Also Sparda wields his own sword in the intro, which is kinda weird. Feel like Sparda probably used Yamato though at least.

There's this concept art of a"perfect devil trigger" form in 4, where Dante's weapons would become part of his body - Rebellion would become his tail, for instance.

To me, it sounds like this Devil Trigger would have a entirely different moveset than his regular form. Imagine the kind of crazy shit we would have seen if DMC 4 was actually completed.

There's a submenu for DT upgrades in DMC4, but it was just for the Trigger Heart to make it last longer. Which, again, tells me there's probably special abilities or variants that they didn't have time implement.

I'm pretty sure that's what's been going on here, but rather I think Vergil is already a Devil Arm, and Nero's spook is actually Vergil himself since he needs Yamato to actually use the DT. What exactly about the art book refutes this? I know the son part, but that only gives a reason why Vergil would be helping his son gain power in the first place.

They should have just made 3 brothers. Virgil, Dante, and the one that got captured by Mundus. Making the brother you fight in 1 Virgil means he's dead and can't be used anymore.

Could have worked where Virgil is the most self-serving and least altruistic towards humans, the third brother is pretty much an angel before his corruption, and Dante is in the middle.

Lmao, if the thumbnail was Vergil, this thread would probably have like 300 posts already. DMC1 openings never really get anywhere. Also can confirm, the spookiness of DMC1 is very comfy.

The fact Arkham temporarily gained Sparda's form before it overpowered him suggested to me that with a suitable host Demons can basically reincarnate from the power sealed in a Devil Arm, if the host isn't someone stronger than them who'll just suppress it like Vergil and Dante, but I doubt Capcom will ever do anything with the idea.

I was hoping it would turn out that Vergil was trying to do that with Nero who was a descendant of another Sparda line or some kind of demon hybrid experiment to make a Sparda, but instead they just went with the Vergil's son thing.

Why the hell do people keep saying this? I've never seen a single piece of official info that points to that.

I mean, Lucifer is clearly related to the Faust and Mephisto enemies. You can see the three eyes on the skull of Lucifer, which is pulled from what an ants head looks like. Which is what Fausts and Mephistos are pretty much. And, like, Fausts are silver dudes that throw reddish spikes in the air. Seems pretty clear where the idea came from.

In my dream DMC5, it turns out that Arkham was once a member of a secret society before going rogue. Sometime after his death, they become dedicated to resurrecting Mundus, and following the shitstorm caused in 4, managed to get their hands of loads of Devil Arms and technology from the remains of the Order of the Sword. Most of the cultists themselves would be the man-sized "rival" battle (though some would transform into, or summon, larger and weirder demons), but it would have to end with Mundus facing off against the three heroes.

I like having human occultist villains, but I agree that they need to be taken out of it quicker for a change. Maybe have them all over and done with 15 missions in so that Mundus (or some other cosmic nasty) runs the last 5 all to themselves.

That's more or less the case, it's not exactly stated but he apparently descends from the same bloodline as the sacrifice Sparda used to seal the Temen ni Gru and knows quite a bit about the supernatural so he must have had some status and connections to have gotten to that point.

I'm not sure they'd be too keen on Mundus given they literally sacrificed to cut him off from their world.

Agreed, I'm not sure why the trend stuck. With DMC3 there's at least an attempt to interweave his mortality with his vice and his past with his present actions and future hopes, but with DMC2 and 4 it was just an asshole businessman and religious figure. Their pasts and the like aren't really even hinted at, they're just in a vague position of power loosely related to dark forces and become dicks.

Same. I think though, because the series has become so much more combat focused since 3, that the puzzles and exploration stuff be made semi-optional somehow. There's that bit in 4 where you have to run around Fortuna Castle, smacking gyro blades around, that drags the pace of the game into a quicksand pit.

I think making more technical puzzles or keyhunty ones that require a lot of backtracking should reveal things like secret missions or optional items that you don't have to redo on repeat playthroughs. Main puzzles that block progress should be a bit more direct, maybe have them rely on new abilities you gain throughout the story (like, Dante could learn to fly again in Devil Trigger during a battle, then use it to scale an otherwise impossible drop). I think that'd be more satisfying than just fucking around with keys and puzzles that feel arbitrary, like most of the shit in 4.

You're confusing him with his wife/Lady's mother. He reveals that after the second Vergil fight, which is extra fucked up because it implies that he only married her and had Lady in order to sacrifice her at a later date.

Nah, I think that would just lead to boring, lifeless level design where it only serves as a backdrop.

Although, something else I would like to see is interactive environments where you can destroy or use props during combat. For instance, the first fight with Berial is really interesting when you have all those shacks around to climb on and get a vantage point at his face. It's a shame that his AoE attack almost always blows them up because it gives you an extra element to play with and could otherwise make the battle all the more replayable.

Plus, smashing smaller enemies through walls, launching chairs at them or grabbing a pole to beat them with God Hand style would be a cool new addition to an already nigh-perfect combat system.

I really like the idea of chapter challenge in Razor's Edge. It's all story levels but without any cinematic bullshit - no cutscenes, no cinematic slow walking - just action. I wish other action games adopted such gameplay mode. It should be standard like bloody palace mode.
