AO is dead but the servers are up. You can play for all day without meeting another player. It's a comfy explorer game now.

Guild wars 2 felt that way for me. Unfortunately it does get a tad stale after a while, since the end game is basically the same as the early and mid.

I used to play a game called Phantasy Star Universe and it was really fun talking to people in it. You could even make your own room and customize it pretty heavily, even setting up a shop in it that players could purchase things from. Even the grind in it was fun because the combat was great.
