The Unfallen are my favorites so far. At first I thought the idea of tree people in space was dumb but they really pulled it off nicely. It's also nice to pretty much never have to worry about food or approval.

Amplitude Studios has probably the greatest community management of any gaming studio. The way they let the community design a whole faction and then throwing a party at release where anyone can just come into their offices and talk directly to them is simply amazing.
>>
>>377463721
Theres some really solid writing behind this game, every faction feels like they are supposed to be the main characters.
I'm doing my first run with the Russian Starship Troppers people and i'm having a blast, next i'm going to play a pacifist route with the space Ents, their trailer was really interesting.
>>
>>377463250
This soundtrack is GOAT,the writing is great, but the gameplay falls short
>>
>>377463250
Is this game worth the 40 bucks, or should I just wait for the summer/whenever it goes on sale? It looks cool.

But I have no friends to play it with
>>
>>377463250
Did they change the combat? How does it work now?
I hated the card system in the first one.
>>
>>377465773
Its mostly a you choose beforehand the tactics and some other stuff and you either watch the combat and just auto-result type of deal.
tbqh i liked it more than the one in Endless Legend...
>>
>>377463250
What is this game? Haven't heard of it. Is it finally a good single player space game or another motherfucking space MMO?
>>
>>377466284
so exactly the same trash like before? where you have little to no influence on the result?
And can't win through tactics with inferior forces?
Guess I'll give this a game a skip.
>>
How is this compared to ES 1? I tried to get into the first one but it felt too slow and the ui made me feel like i was playing a mobile game.
>>
>>377466676
> tactics
its a strategy game, getting bogged down microing your combats is not what we want to go for, and it fucks up gamespeed for multiplayer anyway.
>>
>>377466620
>Is it finally a good single player space game or another motherfucking space MMO?

think civ, with nodes instead of tiles, and in space.
>>
>>377466676
It's better than the first one simply because the modules on your ship are way more diverse and important than ever before and depending on that and your battle plan + tactic cards you can defeat forces that are much stronger than you.
>>
>>377466620
It's Civilization in space. Much better than both Master of Orion and Stellaris, albeit different.

>>

At least wait for a sale. Hopefully by then they'll patch up the post-release bugs.

And unless you're really dying for a space 4x, it probably wouldn't hurt to wait longer. Endless Legend didn't get unique AI personalities until a couple dlc packs in.

Do you know how popular Civilization is?
>>
>>377463250
I bought it but i am away from my gaming computer this weekend. Feels bad man.

I have been revisited Endless Legend leading up to the release since I had barely played the DLCs, and damn if the game isn't great with all the extra content. I saw people hating on Tempest because the facilities were apparently broken, but it seems they patched that since then. I think the new sea stuff is my favorite DLC addition to the game.
>>
I enjoyed the first Endless Space, felt like how a Unity engine game should be done. Just bought this.

If there's one thing I really like about all the Endless titles it's how fucking PRETTY everything is.

>The menu clicking noises
>The art
>The moving portraits for the lesser races
>The growth of planets as you see the surface get dotted with air traffic and cities as they grow
>The music
>The sound design in general

Lord, I love it.
>>
Does your leader ever talk ingame or is it like civ where you never actually see your leader after the intro?
>>
I love turn-based games, but I think Stellaris is spoiling me too much lately because I think real time with pause just feels better for 4X. But maybe I just wanted something that felt a lot different than Civ, Endless Legend was quite similar. Stellaris is a bit bare bones though, I'll certainly be playing Endless Space 2 eventually.
>>
>>377468508
I'm with you there, Vaulters have been my favorite in all the older games, at least you can take the United Empire and drag them right down the Mezari path in their questline.

It's not that niche. These three are beating the almighty Skyrim, and you can't use the "Skyrim is old" thing because Civ5 is older.
>>
>>377474215
Actually, I forgot there were two Skyrims now. But both combined still puts it just below Civ5
>>
>>377472392
There's no reason to as Endless Space 2 improves literally everything. If you liked Legends you will very likely like this one too. There's even a chance to find Auriga in your galaxy.

How customizable can you make the civs in this? I remember it was just some traits or something in EL, not really making your own species or anything. I like how it goes into more of a roleplay factor for Stellaris if you want to make your own.

>>
>>377475093
Stellaris is on Humble Monthly right now, so I doubt it

maybe eventually since it's the better game, but not right now
>>
>>377468508
>>377474207
United Empire are Mezari/Vaulters after they leave Auriga
>>
>>377463250
How is this compared to Stellaris? I've spent a ton of hours building my empire in Stellaris back in 1.2, then took a break and tried out the new 1.5 update this week. Didn't like the forced land warfare, new slow ass pop growth rate, and unity mechanics at all and just stopped playing at this point. Anyone know any youtube videos I could watch if it also has a abysmal tutorial as Stellaris?
>>
Does it auto-skip animations if they're not in view? What I mean is, turns took fucking forever in Civ5 because they would be playing animations even if you couldn't see them. You can turn animations off, but then it looks like shit when you do see them. I forgot what EL did, haven't played in a while. I really just kinda like the real time system in GS games and Stellaris just so I don't have to deal with that shit, I'm starting to think the turn-based aspect doesn't actually improve 4X games much. And I kinda like just building shit whenever instead of just having a construction queue always going. I don't know. ES2 is probably a great game and I'm just bitching too much despite having not played it yet.
>>
>>377477205
It's more of a traditional 4X than the Grand Strategy/4X hybrid Stellaris tried to be
>>
>>377477591
Should I just not bother with it if I disliked Civ 6?
>>
>>377477708
Civ 6 isn't the best example of a 4X, but if you disliked the basic gameplay loop, then ES2 isn't for you
>>
>>377463250
The first one was kinda too simple and boring, especially in late game where management goes out of hand and becomes tedious. Is this one any better?
>>
>>377478061
yes
>>
>>377471185
I don't think they ever fixed the watchtower bug though.
>>
>>377476323
Endless Space 2 improves so much stuff it's way better than even Stellaris in my opinion, but keep in mind they're somewhat different games.
>>
>>377477708
Depends. Civ tends to be more board-game like and each turn is like the one before, where Endless usually changes shit up in a way I've bonded with. But I liked Civ decently. If, for example, you don't like turn-based games, nothing in the endless series is gonna change that.
>>
>>377476601
I'm pretty sure the United Empire and the Mezari already existed by the time all that stuff happens on Auriga.
>>
>>377478061
It's one of those sequels that actually improve literally every single aspect of the first game, be it graphics, presentation, music, gameplay or writing.
>>
>>377478739
the Emperor mentions Mezari ancestry or something to that effect
>>
>>377478869
Well yeah, the United Empire are just people that splitted off from the Mezari, they're the same race.
>>
>>377478592
I kinda just like how different Stellaris is. You're not really hopping to different cities/planets and going down the production queue, you're just building shit whenever you want when you have enough minerals. I don't know, feels like a completely different 4X while EL was very similar to Civ and ES2 looks like it is too. But I still liked Civ and EL, and I'm sure Stellaris's format will get boring to me too. It really feels completely different in a 4X than it did in a Grand Strategy. I'm probably just nitpicking too much here, I'm happier than anything there are a good selection of 4X games since I got into the genre a few years ago with Civ5. Beyond Earth's incredible meh factor killed my hype and Civ6 seems like another pile of crap until expansions come out so I'm glad there are some alternatives.
>>
>>377479068
You should really try Civ4 at least once.
>>
>>377473816

Endless Legend is one of those games where using the auto resolve, even if you get a similar outcome, is likely to cause your army to take far more damage than it would have otherwise. This generally annoys people as it makes them feel like they need to control every battle to try and get the best outcome.

And I actually like the battle system, and it can still eat a lot of time even on max speed, which is a fucking godsend on it's own.

Just won my first game as Unfallen on Normal without realizing it. Just thought it would be a good time for some alliances, befriended Sophons and Riftborn, boom next round the game said I won due to Conquest. Any idea what happened there? Does the game get considerably harder on higher difficulties? Kinda bummed out from that, I wanted to continue the story for the Unfallen, was quite invested in that even though it's not that much.

that happened to me only with Economic. I think with Unfallen, you don't need to actually colonize planets to "control" the system, just extend your vines. You vine'd too hard.

I avoided the first game. All it took was watching a single video of ES1's "combat" to nope the fuck away from the game. Which is a shame, because ES1's setting and aesthetics seemed pretty neat. However, a 4X with shitty conquest mechanics is a shitty 4X.

Did they significantly improve the combat, or is it still largely the same shit?

TBS and Paradox-style RT-with-pause are fine, especially if you set the game speed to fast. Strategy gameplay flourishes best in turn-based or slow-paced real-time because you can focus the brunt of your attention and decision-making on actual strategy by the definition of the word, as opposed to tactics and micro. That's not to say that faster-paced RTS games don't have strategy involved, but it really isn't nearly as much as what you'll find in a MP game of EU4, ES2, or Dominions 4

It's Civilization in space. Choose your faction and lead them to victory. It's really quite simple.

>>377466676
The combat is ES2, and in EL and ES1 for that matter, has always been designed to support the economic and game-map control components of the game -- ships are little more than just the actualisation of your industry and science advantage or disadvantage as applied to war. If you want good 4x combat with less of a focus on the empire-building, take a look at AoW3.

Are they, though? I think the problem with 4X games is more along the lines "we made our interns write all this fluff and it's shit". This approach to setting building and stories is more of a Endless thing. Only other 4X game that actually has a good story would be Alpha Centauri.

ES2 is pretty unrelated to them, with it's low opponent limit, more narrative focus, very defined civs, and default turn limit end condition. There's also simply less content.

You're right, that's not the point. The point of 4X games is to explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate. And yet all to often 4X games like ES completely drop the ball on the last one. Combat that is little more than a pretty cinematic hiding a bunch of dice rolls is fine for genres like RPG's, but not for anything that claims to be in any of the strategy genres, of which 4X is included. A little bit of agency and control over my apparently brain-dead ship captains is all I fucking ask.

You have no control. This game isn't for you.

It's glorified auto-resolve but at least you get consistant results unlike other space 4x where you auto-resolve anyway to save time but the results are wildly unpredictable. I understand that it's fun to play a big RTS-style space battle sometime but in most games the only tactic worth mentioning tactic is kiting with missiles. It's not that big of a loss that you can't control your ships since the execution of the battle if you had control require very little decisions or though anyway, just going through the motions.

The cards don't have these weird counters anymore like in ES1. It simply gives you different options as to how to engage the enemy in a general sense with some added bonuses. Together with the new ship mechanics and modules you can dictate at what range your ships will engage, which of your ships will draw enemy fire, what type of weapons against what type of shield/armor, etc.
You basically have complete control as to what will happen once you press the ready to fight button, you just can't influence it after you made your decisions.

There is very little actual tactics during the battle in space games. Once you set up your ship designs it's basically just trying to keep at optimal range, focus fire and that's it. Very little you can do aside from that.

Only exception I can think of now is SotS with full physics based system, inertia and restricted weapon arcs. You could do some cool stuff there but in 95% of games battle is just basic execution with pretty much zero decision making.
>>
>>377494337
Well, it speak for itself.
>>
>>377494028
What they've got is almost passable. It's like an alpha version of a combat system.

What they need to do is just copy an actual card game. Like, even fucking gwent or something. The cards as they are mostly don't matter - it feels nothing like a game of skill. I honestly got the feeling from watching development that the dev team hated the idea of making combat interesting.

If they wanted autoresolve combat so they could put effort into other parts of the game, they should've just done that. Developing a combat system you don't want that isn't even fun to play is like the worst thing you could do. Waste of effort all around.

>>
>>377494227

That...sounds a lot more reasonable. As long as ships behave consistently and don't fuck off into Derpland after I just told them what to do, then I'd be fine with that. The problem is that most games with auto-resolve combat are so inconsistent that it's not even worth bothering most of the time. If ES2 manages to avoid that, then I'll be considerably more interested.
>>
>>377494604
Yeah, exactly. It's completely wasted effort.

Either do the autoresolve with like 2d sprites or some other low effort shit and be done with it, or actually put some effort into your combat system.

The result was that I had no engines on my other ships and could just use my transporters to get my other ships where I needed them. Five transporters usually got me about 24 movement.

There are types of ships that draw enemy fire. If the enemy has a lot of close range weapons you put those on the close range lines as to even further protect the rest of your fleet for example. I don't think it'd work for a 4x game, but for something similar - x-com style for example, yeah it'd be fucking great.

Take a jupiter-like system, 30+ moons who knows how many asteroids, colonies everywhere, multiple factions, the jupiter-like system acts as gatekeeper for intra-solar travel since slingshot manuevers save fuel, introduce multiple factions, and you've got the perfect setting for realistic space combat and can easily have combat actions take 40+ minutes.

It wouldn't be 4x but it'd be fun.

It's what I thought nexus: the jupiter incident was going to be like for the first 3 or so missions before it went full soft scifi.

your opening turn you should send out both probes. You should remodel your scout ship to have x2 probes when you get the chance and get the detection level tech(s). I didn't know how to find tier 2/3 resources for the longest time until I did it and the AI is also really bad at searching their own systems.

Even on Endless difficulty the AI doesn't seem to give a shit about its resources.

It's actually already really fast. I'd say your average game could be wrapped up in 40min - 2 hours, which is pretty typical for tabletop wargames.

It's complicated but they did a lot of work to cut down on math (e.g. using lookup tables and 'shooting' vectors) I played it with some kids and they picked it up pretty quickly when I followed the suggested guide and used chocolates as incentive.

>As i said, 3 weeks ago.
Old version. In 9 months of Early Access I had a total of 8 hours playtime.

Full release was something totally new. I've already gotten 16+ hours across 3 days. It is much improved!

By the way, most quests are spawned by you sending probes to anomalies. If you don't send probes, you don't trigger quests. What I found to work real great is to convert your first hero into a probe machine: equip 3-4 probe launchers with a stock of 2 probes each so that makes 6-8 probes with a reload of 2 turns, you can a explore half of a max size galaxy in the first 20 turns that way.

eh, EL did that pretty good, simultaneous turns and you can manage everything else outside of battlefield while battle is happening, command in multiple battles simultaneously and they are limited to 6 turns. If anything that system was made specifically for multiplayer.

you still have to pick a primary faction trait and a visual theme (which also decides your ship hulls), although you can pick a different option for each now

>assigning well-developed heroes to fleets
>choosing your battles
>choosing tactics and flotilla positioning for that tasty morale bonus
Personally, I'm happy with it. It's small step improvement over ES1. It will get even better with the expansions.

I sure as hell don't want a 4X game to have gookclick gameplay for the combat, like everyone here. Or space simulator combat. Leave those crazy hybrid for Scam Citizen and its backers.

You've got to admit that's a bad naming convention.
>>
>>377499739
But it's not. It's how any fucking software works.
>>
>>377499310
They replaced the tech system halfway through early access, because the community wanted it changed.
Previously they had the ages system from EL, which was easier to navigate and such.
They do need to work on the tech tree UI, I don't think the actual mechanics of the tech tree need as much work, but probably some balancing.
Thankfully Amplitude are quite good at supporting their games with patches.

The tech tree needs more colour and DISTINCT icons. Light gray square, medium gray square, slightly darker gray square, square with a tiny do inside... are not distinct enough when you zoom out the fuckhuge tech tree.

The fact that the tech-tree needs and already has a search function is evidence that even the devs can't find the tech they want visually.

I kinda miss the previous tree. Fuck the community. The same community also designed the retarded Sister of Mercy hero in Endless Legend and several heroes in Dungeon of the Endless, with bonuses which have ZERO use in gameplay.

>>
>>377499972
So? Just because that's how many versions they had, doesn't mean that's how it's done.
Often software can and will get to a 0.10 version, or a 0.11

Consumer is king. It's why the Xbox two had to be called 360. And why Samsung Galaxy Note six had to be called 7...

If devs want to sell in development stuff then they need to adopt intuitive naming conventions. Back in the days when the consumer heard nothing about in development software the devs were free to use whatever bullshit they wished, those days are over.
