It can be pretty p2w, but the vast majority of characters can be obtained in game. Just some have ridiculous grinds (Baze Malbus is one of the good ones that comes to mind)

Are there any tolerable, perhaps even decent, single player RPGs worth checking out? I am mainly looking for something I can play and fuck around in while I lay in bed at night before falling asleep. Seems most stuff is multiplayer gacha bullshit that I quickly lose interest in.

If you haven't played shin megami tensei 1 then I'd really recommend it. I'm pretty sure it's only on ios but you could probably just emulate the snes version if you've got an android or whatever.
