Demons is neither the apex of the series nor unplayable, and should be cheap enough at its age to be not a huge monetary risk should you not like it. Personally I think its still well worth a play.

Demon's Souls is surpassed by every other Souls game that came after it, here is the objective high IQ Soulsborne ranking that nobody can refute:

BB:TOH > DaS3:TFFE > DaS:PTDE > DaS2:SOTFS > DeS

If you have access to a gaming PC, make sure to play Souls trilogy on PC for the best experience, DaS1 needs to be modded, but it is worth it.

I recommend playing all the Dark Souls games first. DS1 is a good start

Demon's Souls is pretty mediocre from a gameplay aspect. There's gender-locked armor, you're expected to farm and bank tons of healing (as opposed to Bloodborne's 20 blood vial limit). The bosses are for the most part easy as fuck, and the runs back to them are obnoxious. Most enemies are pushovers, but some have incredibly inflated HP values and you're expected to R1 spam them to death since no poise exists. The atmosphere of the game is great, but it's really lacking in many areas. I wouldn't buy a console just to play it, but if you have the means to play it already available and it costs like 20 bucks, go for it.

Thats how i would rank them personally, so if it means anything, i think demon's souls is better than dark souls 3 which is the last one to come out and that clearly feels more like bloodborne. The reason i feel like this is as majority would explain, the general feeling the game gives, the level design, just atmosphere. Game is clearly "dated" by the current standards in terms of gameplay but its still so close that you will feel in charge if you have played dark souls 1, so i would go with dark souls 1 and stick to the end as you skipped it and went to bb right away which i would never recommend but hey bb has to be someones first, anyway you might need to get over the fact its not bloodborne. Then you will feel right at home with demon's souls in terms of movement. At least more so than you would have if you jumped from bb to des.

If you already have a PS3 just get it. It goes for like 15 bucks now.

Demon's Souls is very cool. In terms of atmosphere it matches Bloodborne. You can tell it was a project of passion and it all oozes through. In terms of mechanics, yes, Dark Souls and BB are more refined. Yet we're talking about a series of games that were all released within 7 years of each other, so even Demon's Souls' "dated" gameplay is still totally current.

Healing is a bit cheesy (still harder than Dark Souls), item management is annoying, and no plunging attacks, but that's about it. DeS has better connectivity because it uses verticality for shortcuts instead of le open world meme like DaS1. DeS has better enemy variety because each world not only has wildly different enemies, but the enemies match a theme for each world. Speaking of which, DeS is the only game to reach high thematic goals that go beyond simple art design which wildly alter the approach you have to take when defeating each world. DeS is also the only game with completely unique bosses, whereas every DaS boss is basically just a copy of Flamelurker's overly aggressive behavior because memes.

Dark Souls was literally a rushed game, even more than 2. Bamco urged them to release it before it was really complete so that they could compete with Skyrim of all things, and it really shows.
Half of the game sucks while the other half is brilliant and there's lots of odd design choices and un-used content compared to every other game, and the game was an even bigger mess filled with bugs on launch, but people forgave it because the game was ambitious as fuck and had a lot of heart and soul regardless of its many issues. DaS2 was a more consistent experience on launch, though it never reaches the highs that DaS1 achieved.

The reason why Bloodborne is the best souls game is because it has the same ambition, talent and heart that was behind DaS1 while still not being rushed and having Japan Studio's help.

I still think DeS is my favourite out of all the souls games I liked the nexus hub and I liked the atmosphere better than the other games apart from the first half of BB. If your coming from BB to DeS you will find character movement and combat in general to be a lot clunkier and slower but that could be said of any of the souls games due to the heavier armour and weapons etc

Unique doesn't equal good, anon. A lot of the fights in DeS are forgettable and easy (don't pretend you or anybody gives a shit about any of the VoD fights aside from Astraea) and the most memorable fights are the more straightforward ones like Flamefucker, Penetrator, King Allant, etc which is why those style of fights were built up further in later games.

Das3 is the most similar souls game to Bloodborne, gameplay wise. If you use a dagger you can even quickstep.

Having just replayed DeS about a week ago, it's clunkier, slower, and aged than it's successors, but it has it's own merits. Definitely give it a shot.

It was my second souls game and I'd say it's my personal favorite, I think they really nailed the atmosphere. Tower of Latria has got to be my favorite area in a souls game.It'd be perfect in my eyes if it just had some more content and the ability to level up at bonfires.
