I'll be honest, I completely forgot you had to learn spells from Espers, but still the amount of grinding you have to do to be able to beat the game is absolutely minimal. It's the easiest game out of the entire series, and I'm counting XIII in that.

The controls are total shit which fucks over the platforming throughout the game (looking at you, temple trials), the "puzzles" don't require any thought and each puzzle type repeats like 10 types (outrun this thing to get to this spot, control this slig to kill these other sligs, navigate this minefield, use this cover against enemies in the background, recite this password, etc) and the ps3 version at least is buggy as shit: if you control a slig and run either too close to Abe or too far from him, the game softlocks (everything on the screen freezes and you can't do anything except restart). It's happened to me at least 6 times in different parts of the game.

It's just a total slog, and I don't care for it at all

Dude what. The controls are simple as hell. I picked that shit up no problem when I was like 11 and very quickly understood that any platforming fuck ups were on me and me alone. The game just needs pretty precise inputs, especially during the trials.

Play it again. Abe does not handle like a new Mercedes, I'll say that much, and you can feel how the jumping is programmed with the way jumping is animated. It's not hard to learn how it works, but that doesn't make it feel any nicer.
