I realized I can get pretty reliable recommendations by just finding what /v/ hates.

White spots are far from mandatory, you can do them if you wish. Though I do have autist friends who must always do every presented activity in a game even if they hate it so might be a problem for those.

I thought Huey was alright and that's coming from someone who was worried he would be super annoying.

Beyond that I just think the level design and amount of good dialogue were both great. I had way more fun and laughs than with Sticker Star. In terms of humor I think it was even almost up to the first two games but shame about the simplicity of the battles and lack of character variety.
