You can play the game at console quality normally and then have the free option to download the files you need to play at 4k@144fps or whatever you want. Not only would it help decrease file sizes for people who just want to play the game, it would also provide concrete stats for how many people actually give a shit about high-performance graphics even on PC.

Fallout 4 takes 30 gigabytes of space and it's only 1080p. 30.000 / 1080 = 27 megabytes per pixel.
DOOM is 80 gigabytes but it's a 4K game. 80.000 / 4000 = 20 megabytes per pixel.

Megatextures don't just take up more space on your hard drive you dumb niggers. Megatextures allow for a game to utilize more unique texture assets which results in the game containing more textures which results in a larger filesize.

Also the game has generally pretty high poly count and uncompressed audio, plus they kept adding more and more shit to the game's multiplayer. iirc it was like 55gb on launch.
