Nobody registers Zelda as iconic title though. Its just Zelda. The brand is iconic, but no one ever though "oh yeah that one stood out". Its just Zelda.

Just wait for the GOTY awards to roll out. Zelda is a good game but people just make a check in the usual box and move on to games that are actually noteworthy.

Yeah, no. P5 is a good JRPG, but that's all it is. It's just a very well done stock-standard Persona game. That is not enough to be a standout, especially in a year with so many games breaking the mold.

Despite being a near-perfect JRPG it's still a JRPG. It's probably the best one this decade, but it's fighting an uphill battle against Zeldadrones and people justifying their Switch purchase as far as GOTY is concerned.

I played and beat P5, and I don't get the ungodly hype its getting from /v/. The game play is fun of the mill Paper Scissor Rocks RPG formula, and the dungeons are a boring chore. The dating-sim side of things isn't anything special either, since none of the stories have branching paths, or even good writing. Most of the romances is "I'm in trouble, help me, wtf i love you now" with poor pacing a development.

After the first dungeon, the story only moves at the beginning and ending of that particular story arc, with very poor development in the middle, with most conversations and cut-scenes in-between just repeating basic plot points ad nauseum.

The only thing I did enjoy was the Persona collecting. Most Palaces can be beat in a single day, and I usually would go back a second to explore at leisure and making sure I didn't miss a Persona, until 1/3rd into the game, when I realized Mementos basically has all the Personas. That, and fusing them to break the game.

I didn't dislike the game, but it has too many flaws to be getting the praise it gets.

Nier Automata also has awful pacing, Route B felt like a chore until hitting Route C. The gameplay was good, but shallow for both Action and RPG fans, and the story is mostly pseudo-intellectual wankery. People that praise Nier's story sound like freshman taking Philosophy 101.

The best PS4 game of 2017 is Yakuza 0, but the most iconic game of the year is Zelda and anybody with both consoles fucking knows it. Stop trying to fight the wave.

That game had no right being as good as it was. I borrowed it from a friend, and enjoyed everything about it from start to end. Doing my second play-through right now, and I'm surprised at the amount of shit that I missed.

Anyone that talks about existentialism is going to sound like that though.
And "pseudo-intellectual" is purely subjective. The game does not beat around the bush when it comes to philosophy and neither does it pop jokes about it constantly. Even if you think it's at a low level, Yoko Taro at least tried to get the point across in a meaningful way.
