Morgana was in the wrong, but I still like Morgana a lot and always have him in my party.

Very obviously Morgana. He was just being a sensitive bitch. That said, I still love the little bastard. The entire drama with Morgana leaving the team felt like it came out of nowhere. It's like they had to toss in some sort of drama because they realized the team got along a little too well up to that point.

Ryuji. Morgana came at him with the bantz every now and then, he responds by attacking him during an obvious crisis moment by insulting him with the thing he's afraid of.

Childhood is thinking one of them was in the wrong. Adulthood is realizing that Morgana can't fucking take the insults when he dishes them out constantly on Ryuji, being too fixated on changing Okumura's heart not realizing that they're falling into a somewhat obvious trap just to prove his worth to the team due to his insecurities and that Ryuji is a dumb monkey, that while well meaning, is still a loud fuck who can't keep his mouth shut, let fame go to his head and a potential liability to the team post-Madarame.

Ryuji doesn't mean to offend when he just naturally refers to him as a cat, because that's litterally his physical form, but Morgana is the one who can't handle it.
Ryuji is studying, or worried about tests and Morgana just out of nowhere is like 'I BET YOU'RE GONNA GET A BIG OLD F'
Ryuji misses an attack, but Morgana needs to remind him how worthless he is.
Ryuji just wanted to be recognized for his efforts as a hero. Morgana just wanted to be recognized for his skills, but couldn't handle comparing himself to Ryuji as an equal.

Morgana was too proud for his own good and Ryuji wasn't good at realising his joke was actually gonna hurt, but neither of them meant any harm.

Really though, I have to say, Ryuji takes a lot more than he gives, he's a good guy even if he is a bit of a fuckup.

Morgana started having an existential crisis after Futaba joins the team. His position as strategist was already claimed by Makoto, while his navigator skills was bested by Futaba. With a mix of not really knowing what the fuck he really is, his passive aggresive relationship with Ryuji and his frustrations of not being a help to the team as much as he used to be; Morgana was left very vulnerable. When Ryuji playfully calls him useless in an attempt to cheer up Futaba, he took this the wrong way. The final straw was when everyone backed down in attempting to change okumura's heart because it felt wrong. Since he was so fired up in his attempt to show that he wasnt useless, he calls out everyone for backing out of the target. This obviously offended Ryuuji because Morgana was being more of a dick so they fought.

It's not just about that, he goes into more details when he's back.

Everyone in your team has a similar messed up history, they've got goals and objectives, they want revenge or want to stop things like what happened to them from happening again. Even Ryuji and Ann who aren't connected to the overall plot have this, both their lives were turned upside down by fucked up adults and corrupt authority. The Phantom Thieves is in many ways about this rebellion.

We see this anytime a new character joins and they hear about everyone's (particularly Joker's) past. And, as we see when Yusuke joins, Morgana doesn't have any of that. He doesn't have any revenge or any great injustice, he just wants his memory back (Ryuji was the one who comforted him about this at the time).

That's why he tries to pretend that the thieves are his pawns, because that's his justification for what he's doing, that he needs them to get his memories back (to fug Ann).

And then, the more things go on, the more he accepts that it's clearly not true. He loves them and wants to be with them, but he has no justification for being part of their group, be doesn't feel like he's part of them, and all he's doing is pushing his friends into danger for his own selfish reasons.

Then Makoto joins and she's a better healer than him, and she and Joker now do most of their strategies, which was usually him and Joker before.

Then especially Futaba joins and she does all his navigation better, does everything he was doing better and even knows more about Mementos (HIS THING) than him.

So, he has no place as their guide, he doesn't feel like he deserves to be part of their team and what he wants is just selfishly endangering them.

And, of course, the whole time he's stewing about that, he's too proud to talk about it, or admit his issues.

So it boils to a head and he leaves in a moment of hotheaded anger, and then he feels like he can't return.

I like the both of them. Actually I like every party member in 5. Ryuji was constantly giving back banter to Morgana throughout the game, it was more of Futaba than Ryuji that made Morgana leave anyway

I found the fighting a bit cringey and annoying since I'm already past all that stuff in my own life, but Ryuji bothered me more. He said some really unnecessarily shitty things during the fight, and I was pretty relieved when Futaba said he was a douche. Never saw Ryuji the same way after that though.
