With Rean alone removed and/or replaced, the fanbase bitching would be at a minimum and the requirements to filling his role are so low that basically anybody else in the cast could've done it
The dickriding doesn't even necessarily have to come along, because that was only part of being an LN stereotype as a flat, self-insert character, and to make the player feel like they themselves are being sucked off

Can you even imagine what it'd be like if somebody with his same goals and motivation to help others like Towa was the MC instead, including being a giant robot pilot and Osborne's child?
It'd still be a mary-sue with indestructible plot armor that half the players hate, but at least the suedom comes from being the Grandmaster of Ouroboros and not just poor writing
And Elise wouldn't have any reason to exist, but if she somehow did anyway it'd be as a more dynamic character and not a walking brocon machine- if anything she'd probably be the one trained by Ka-fai himself thus making her an actual badass

It might be possible to salvage something from Alisa, Fie, or Machias, but it's probably not even worth trying considering all you'd have to wade through. Elliot and Laura are largely pointless for non-sexual purposes, and Rean and Crow should be cut off completely.

Not really considering Sara, Toval and Claire are all highly experienced and well known in their highly combative professional fields. It actually makes sense for a soldier, a bracer and a former bracer to try to help out with the war effort, at least moreso than it makes sense for a bunch of kids with about eight months worth of training to take such an active part in the war (Rean and Emma being the obvious exceptions since he's a super special snowflake and she's an actual witch).

After CS 1 obviously they couldn't let us just play as an altogether different better cast, but they certainly could've done a lot better with Class VII than they did and they certainly could've done the Erebonia arc without setting it in a highschool straight out of a generic LN.

The series was never perfect but at least the tropes more prevalent in Sky were executed well.

I personally think they shouldn't have existed as characters in the first place. Jusis, Emma and Gaius work but the rest of Class VII are total unnecessary filler from the get go. Falcom bloated the cast and as a result (along with the bonding system being shitty and half-assed) all these filler characters who are supposed to feel like a cohesive team or family just end up walking cliches spouting stupid lines about how much they've grown closer despite not actually having grown closer at all.

I played and loved the Sky games so it was just a bit surprising to see all the harsh criticism for the Cold Steel games, wasn't really sure what to make of it. Thanks for the explanations everyone.

The most incredible thing about Cold Steel, in fact, is that characters tend to get worse the more the plot focuses on them. The main protagonists and antagonists are almost universally terrible or pointless, with a scant few exceptions (e.g. Jusis for the party, Duvalie for the enemies). The side characters like Toval and Sara aren't amazing, but they're relatively fun and grounded and don't feel like they'd be too out of place in previous games. The NPCs are by some miracle among the best in the series, and god knows how.

His personality doesn't work, what works is his background. You'd need to combine some elements of Crow, probably, but as a relative outsider to the empire whose lands could be totally overrun thanks to Osborne's shenanigans he could've been put to good use, narratively and thematically. I think you'd have to rework everyone personality-wise if you kept anything at all, but some of the concepts behind the characters do work. Okay since the echo chamber on CS haters is going full force let's put the good stuff about the characters for a change:

Starts perhaps the closest to Rean in terms of goals, unsure of what he wants to do and in thors because that was what he was told to do, but grows through CS and CS2 to not only be more decisive about what he wants but also expands his horizons beyond just music and thus has a better understanding of his father.

>Machias:
Obvious development about stopping being a judgemental prick is obvious, even if it's still a part of him. More subtle is how the motivation for him to go into politics/military goes from proving those nobles who's best but to actually help the common people and do good.

>Gaius:
The one who needed less development considering how grown up he already was, but that does mean he already many qualities to start with (like being friendly, dependable, determined etc.). However, his simple mindedness goes away and does learn how to rely on others.

Terrible second impression, and she is easily the least mature member of class VII, but she does improve a lot throughout both games and in her favor, she does try and tackle the difficult issues in her life head on to solve them, even if she is still out of her depth.

Having to depend on his bonding events to develop the rest of the cast does limit the interaction we see between the rest of the cast (and that's mainly because accounting for all the different possible choices in terms of dialog is next to impossible), but we still get plenty of hints that interaction is taking place and it's nice to acknowledge that he has many good choices that he can make in his life, even if rean himself has trouble accepting this.

I don't think it's a waste of time. I don't work with my Japanese on a daily basis, so to keep it 'functional' I have to use it. Translation serves to give me an outlet, keep my Japanese from being rusty, etc etc.

And on top of this, learning another language is actually apparently good for your long-term mental health. Which difficulty? On Normal, Kitty/Ninja gear (and related drops), levels around 133 to 135, and a solid party (I rolled Kevin, Anelace, Richard, Renne) will do the trick.

For the final round, it's usually a good idea to get rid of Loewe first because of the clones, so just put a Time Gem and/or Gaia Shield on your arts support, space your fighters out to mitigate Armor Rend and any other AOE/line attacks, Zodiac ASAP, and have Grail Sphere and your best food items ready (especially for speeding up). S-Crafts after you buff can really help. I didn't have too much trouble because I'd overprepared somewhat, but you'll have to tweak orbments for the final round on Hard/NM.

I'm an arts nerd in the games. My 'ultimate party' for this would be two heavy hitters (one of whom has to be Anelace), and a heavy hitting arts user and a healer that can do offensive arts use as well on the off chance you don't need to heal someone.

If you got the mirror quartz, use Zin as your second physical fighter with mirror equipped. Most fights will use physical and that quartz has a 50% chance of reflecting physical attacks, and Zin can manage the HP sacrifice for it.

Also, if you did the Abyss already, and have an interest in giving one of the zemuria stone weapons to Richard, get it now, and equip it on Anelace, since she shares weapons with him.

Second, off, Time Gem is a godsend for this. So do the Maniac level of the Mirannaire door if you haven't yet.
