It's been SEVENTEEN years.

Even with all the improvements in graphics, AI etc. no one has managed to create anything that comes close.

How?
>>
Level design
>>
>>377394961
Not even nostalgia goggles I played it for the first time last month.

First time in years I've been unable to pull myself away from a game. The soundtrack would be repeating in my head as I went to sleep and when I closed my eyes I'd imagine the levels.

Felt like being a kid again.
>>
>>377394961
>AI
C'mon, it's not that good.

That being said, it's in my personal top 5.
>>
Deus Ex sucks dick

even old Duke Nukem games were better
>>
>>377397320
It's very obvious that you just wanted to bump this thread.

I meant improvements in AI systems in general, not that Deus Ex AI was good.

DTS ruins it.

>inb4 throw it away

they're everywhere later on. I hate having to purposefully gimp myself.
>>
>>377397068
I'm similar, I bought it for myself about four months ago, having had no information about it other than that it was a sci-fi RPG. I died a lot but had a huge amount of fun with it.

I think a lot of it is to do with how the levels are so open and free-form, there's a lot of different ways to approach a problem and there's no really "correct" choice. For ultimately being linear it does a good job of feeling like it's not.

Also it's one of the few games where stealth isn't boring and doesn't suck.
>>
>>377399543
>there's no really "correct" choice
Not only that, but the dialogue and stuff changes based on how you do shit so it feels like every way you do something feels correct.
>>
>>377399063

Gunther in battery park?

I didn't fight him until the Cathedral.
>>
>>377399063
Did you run away from Paul?
>>
>>377400216
He's invincible in that fight, you're meant to lose and they strip you of your items and dump you in the MJ12 base on Liberty Island[/spoiiler]
>>
>>377400435

I didn't even see him there I don't think. I got killed outside Paul's apartment and taken to the MJ12 base.

Everywhere I went it kept saying a German was around but I never saw him until the Cathedral in Paris.

Something about the turn of the 21st century and early ventures into 3D had developers then thinking on a really innovative level. They had masterful classics to look back on that elevated mechanics and game design, but then were free to elaborate on said design in a more cinematic and immersive way. That said they captured the spirit of the "immersive sim" or FPSRPG well.
>>
>>377406456
Not many. I did the same with SS2, and although it's a good game it's not better than a 7-8/10

It has good RP gameplay. The decisions you can make in the game, which provide in world feedback to, are part of the gameplay. The action side of it is average, sure. Overall it makes it better than something like Perfect Dark unless you just don't care about RPGs.

My primary issues with Deus Ex are that the gunplay isn’t good, enemies aren’t interesting, the stealth isn’t good, the hacking/lockpicking are one dimensional, there isn’t a significant platforming/area traversal element. Dialogue basically never constitutes a good gameplay challenge, and Deus Ex isn’t an exception there.

On the level of simply the game living up to what it is,the game doesn’t really care if you go lethal or nonlethal in any of the missions (after the third one it stops tracking the difference completely). The overall story arc is completely linear, you always have to betray unatco, you always get captured by gunther, you always break out of unatco, go to hong kong, infiltrate versalife, etc, etc. There are tons of invincible NPCs in many of the levels, especially the early ones. You’re required to kill multiple NPCs to proceed (even if there are clever workarounds for all but one of them).

I went into Deus Ex thinking, “Wow, I can do anything.” After learning more about the game, I realized, “Wow, I can’t do anything.” My opinion on the game changed over time as my opinions about what made a good game or not became more refined. Deus Ex isn’t deep. There’s a lot going on, but none of it is interconnected, meaningful, or challenging. Deus Ex is just a bad game.

sounds like you listened to all the memes about deus ex and formed an opinion before you actually played it. everybody talked about the 'nonlethal choice' but it was pretty much just one comment Paul makes because he's an undercover terrorist
>>
>>377408947
No. It was shit. It added nothing new to the genre, aside from shitty cancerous mechanics that plague it up to this day like regenerating health (shields) and 2 weapons carry limit.
Half Life had far better AI, and far better story. And it told its story without the use of cutscenes that break immersion. So did many other hybrid fps games like System Shock 2.
If you want vehicles go play a fucking race game. Vehicles in FPSs absolve no other function other than being a gameplay filler mechanic.
The only type of player that praises halo is the shitter that played is first fps on a console. You know nothing about the genre, as you never played it when it was in its golden age (late 90s).

gunplay is fine when its leveled up. hacking lockpicking is simple as it should be, fuck annoying minigames. there is plenty of traversal, in fact its one of its strongest points, youre just a retarded pleb with no creativity. dialogue is great, and meaningful npc interaction is not exclusive to dialogue options like in other games

Why is this always the go to shitty excuse to dismiss the game with, as if it even means anything? It means nothing. Halo as an experience was unlike anything else prior.

>Half Life had far better AI, and far better story
Story part is very subjective and I overall disagree, enemies don't drop weapons and they are less charismatic in Half Life. You're probably thinking purely in terms of challenge here but challenge is not what made Halo so great, being an exciting game world to be in was.

I think Americans' almost religious faith in the power of their vote is the main way the average citizen is controlled. If the political winds start changing, they change the ad campaign for the same power.

Right now TPP is sold as the anti-xenophobe, anti-nationalist to a future utopia. But if that gets to threadbare I can easily see it going back to "we need small gov and no regulation."

OP here, just going to add something I thought about after playing this.

I realised that I started out doing a non-lethal approach as that's how I usually play games that give you the choice. As the story went along I started getting angry and felt betrayed so got more and more violent; as I started to trust less and less people I started killing without hesitation. The game manipulated my emotions so well that it changed the way I played it. That realisation was when I realised the true greatness of the game.

tl;dr: this game actually made me feel. I thought this would never happen again and that I'd grown out of being moved by vidya I'm 28

>Why is this always the go to shitty excuse to dismiss the game with
Because it is true and not an excuse. Halo looks fantastic only to those that never played an atmospheric or story-centric fps before. Which means everyone that got to play it when it was released as one of the flagship xbox exclusives. Because before that, there where no similar games... ON CONSOLES.
Pc on the other hand had plenty of games like that. Some where pure FPSs (half life, Unreal, AvP, Dark Forces), other where hybrid FPS (System Shock, Deus Ex).
Halo did to FPS what WoW did to MMORPG and Oblivion did to RPG: streamlined the genre to appeal the lowest common denominator and turned into

>Story part is very subjective
It isn't. You can like the content of story or not, but the way it was executed and presented is something that can objectively evaluated. Halflife was action packed, yet it had a fantastic story, which was narrated not trough cutscenes, but scripted events that didn't break the flow of the gameplay in any way.

>Nice other "rebuttal" you cunt.
There is nothing to rebut. Vehicles in a FPS are a non-necessary additional gimmick. Alone they aren't enough to call a game "great". Halo did vehicles greatly, duh... too bad it did everything else like shit and killed the FPS genre, turning it into a shitfest of consolized slow-paced turds with regenerating health, few weapons and mary sue space marines in power armor.
