From what I've seen the multiplayer works, but it's pretty dead at the moment, people find it hard to find games although it's possible eventually. I mostly play against bots because I'm a shitter, so I have no idea outside of reading discussions pages.

No one gives a fuck about Halo Wars, it's like the Metroid Prime series, fans talk about it as though everyone wants it but then the sells come in and we see a different picture. I'm ready for a numbered FPS Halo game staring the Master Chief and a numbered 2.5D Metroid game staring Samus Aran.

Halo 5s multiplayer is really good.

But it's a Xbone exclusive and the last major release in the franchise (MCC) was an unplayable mess.
