I really don't get the appeal of Monster Hunter. Seriously, I really don't and I always wonder why /v/ has a massive hard-on for this terrible game.

As a veteran of the Souls series starting with Demon's Souls and beaten Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3 along with Bloodborne beating the DLC and NG+, (with Dark Souls widely known as the most difficult video game series), I consider myself an excellent gamer who can meet challenges head on and triumph over them

HOWEVER

Monster Hunter is terribly designed and over half of my deaths are from unavoidable bullshit from:

- flexing after healing (who's the fucking retard that made this)
- monsters stun you for 5 seconds after getting hit twice (absolute artifical difficulty don't deny it)
- Super slow weapons? (what the flying fuck?)

Apart from that, the gathering hall has progress that is independent of the caravan, with high rank quests with monsters you won't find in Caravan, and it eventually makes its way into G-Rank.

I put about 700 hours into it. I guess I enjoyed it but it was only a high rank game so you have very limited options for sets to put together. Arts and styles are fine, some are good and some are pretty useless. I think a lot of the whining about that addition is coming from people who jumped in at 3U and think they're veterans of the franchise. Truth is we've gotten a lot of nice quality of life improvements over the years, though they're not entirely consistent in transferring some of them, and having a lot of new additions at once to play with on the weapons was refreshing. Really though I'd say to anyone thinking about getting into it to just wait and see if the G rank version is released in the west or get XX and a translation patch. There's really not much content in Gen. I only put that much time into it because that's where most of the players are now. I still think 4U is the better overall package but the online for that is dying rapidly. You can still get groups but they're filled with shitters, cheaters, and if you need to do some rarely posted event quest for a piece of gear then good luck finding a team for that. You'll probably have to solo it these days.

~ The standard mechanical changes and additions to the most basic of movesets that you might expect from each entry, and are the parts most likely to carry over, such as enhanced notes for hunting horn to encourage actually attacking the monster by rewarding playing it properly, or switch axe axe mode's motion values being returned to 3U values but with the improved 4U moveset, plus the fixed finisher for the hack 'n' slashes, or bows having both power and arc shots as well as a new backdodge into level three charge move as well as element boost coatings, bowguns getting internal shots with unique properties that cannot be crafted but restock between hunts, the Lance's new third poke that gives the weapon more elemental power as well as better flow and timing (although veterans will likely argue because they're so used to a timing that's been ingrained in them for such a long time that they won't actually bother to give the new stab a fair shake and will default to striker style)

~ Way too over the top in terms of flashiness, heavily contrasts with other entries in the series in both tone and presentation. Admittedly the series has been going in such a direction for quite some time now but it was at a slow pace, and in this case it's like they saw the sharq in the road and instead of just hopping over it like normal people, they took a sprinting run-up and longjumped like 8 metres past it.

~ Styles and Arts are unbalanced as fuck. That said, it's pretty obvious that they're using them as a way to get some money out of playtesting new ideas so they can have a better idea of how to progress into the future and have tangible experiences with regards to how certain features might play out. Even so when some arts/styles are completely worthless and yet others end up being so ubiquitous that you're artificially extending your hunt time by 30% by not using them (demon riot + energy charge) it becomes clear that balance was the last thing on their mind.

I have XX with the English patch and Gen installed on my system. Which one should I play? Gens is entirely English which is a fucking godsend for me since I finally got fed up with Frontier's language barrier and grind prospective. XX has more content tho. Im also curious about the online environments for each one, like which one is more chill?

Like, Monster Hunter has always kind of boiled down to trial and error. Learn what the monster does and adapt to abuse the fuck out of that. Plan and predict.

But there's good trial and error, and there's bad trial and error, and bad trial and error just ends up being tedious and unfun, and that's what no-tell instacharges, random flailing, and having to learn that garuga's pecks are super accurate on one side but not so much on the other end up being. I dunno, maybe Garuga favouring one side made sense when there was a difference between the one-eyed "wolf" garuga and regular perfectly non-blinded garugas but its speed, precision, and general lack of tells feel out of place as fuck post third generation.

I dont disagree with you on these points, Monster Hunter as a series is bogged down by many archaic gameplay features that absolutely need reworking.
As to why i like the game despite these shortcomings, the game is absolutely built on pure fun.
The cycle of hunt to weapon and armor crafting is probably the most immensely rewarding payout, the feeling of not only walkimg away with a chest full of rewards but to be able to personally apply them to dozens of potential uses is beyond satisfying
the depth behind each weapon and the mile high skill ceiling allows for hundreds of hours just wrapped up in refining your skill with the same weapon, and the stellar animation design provides such weight to your movement and attacks that it almost ruins other, similiar games by comparison.
And of course the monsters, at their best represent possibly the most engaging and deep "boss" design of any game. When the game clicks, it feels like youre locked in a dance with them, which in turn provides further satisfaction in the revalation of your own personal progress

tldr; the games not perfect but its built on multiple pillars of addictiveness

It's the only MH I don't enjoy playing at all. I had more fun with vanilla MH on PS2 when I tried it last year for the first time. XX didn't really make it any more fun for me, it just did pointless shit like making it fucking impossible to have decent damage skills and Evade+1/Evade Extender at the same time. Actually never mind, Frontier spoiled me with 1080p and Dualshock 3 for too long. Event though I played the FUCK outta MH4U, I just started it back up for shits and giggles and god how did I do it? I put down 1400 hours into 4U and I'd gladly play Frontier if it was localised but looking up info through a 3rd party site and memorising menu movements instead of being able to understand the menus directly sucks. Not to mention all the new Frontier stuff to get used to and english resources outside of fist.moe being scarce.
Also after enjoying 3U and, to a lesser extent since I played on an O3DS, 4U in a decent framerate, Frontier's 30 feels a bit bad especially since there's no reason for them to lock it to 30 these days anyway.
That said, the 3DS fucking sucks and I can't wait till they make a new MH for any other playform.
