I've been thinking about how to implement a roguelike MMO, but I'm having trouble figuring out a decent way combat could work with multiple players. Maybe keep fights instanced where players can pop in and out by entering an area created when aggroing enemies, and let time flow be dictated by turns.

Comfy survival sim with an expansive crafting system. I just love working on my deathcar and staying in to read on rainy days

I don't want to stray too far, and I don't like the limited turn time combined with auto fighting of MAngband. I realize there has to be some sort of timeout for combat, though.

I want to have a persistent open world where anyone can run through a field, see someone fighting, and join them. Not just a bunch of instanced dungeons, but a proper open world MMO.

DC:SS is a good way to start. If you don't want to miss the mouse controls, try ADOM.

TOME is probably my favourite roguelike, just because it's so comfy to control everything with the mouse and there's a shitton of build options.

I'm probably a pleb, but I think ToME is a great balance of difficulty. I just wish stuns weren't quiiiiite so common and the controlscheme was slightly less mouse driven.

Pixel dungeon is surprisingly legit. I was expecting some shitty phone game instead of an actual roguelike. Other than that I've mostly been trying to not suck shit at Nethack, I'm still usually stuck to the single digit levels, but at least the number is slowly rising.

If you want an easy stomp character to get a gist of the game (but likely won't win you it due to longer-term issues) try Troll Berserker/Hunter (Hunter for massive rock cheese seriously they're so good) or Spriggan Venom Mage for physical/magical respectively.

Dogs/Gnolls handle the early game extremely well with their ridiculous aptitudes at low skill levels. Later on they do pretty well as hybrids

Kobolds are pretty good casters after their rebalance, and since they're carnivores they don't have to worry about food in a 3 rune game.

The stealth skill helps avoid situations like that, but early on you probably want to focus on a weapon or other offensive skill

Just pick one thing to work on at a time. Maybe you want to grind up your cooking or casting magic dart, so you go off and do that while making little advances in everything else.
Then when you're happy with where that skill is for the time being, you can move on to something else, like setting up a shop or farm.
You take it piece by piece. Splatting is the same as in every roguelike, it comes with the territory. Just roll up and start again. Or you could just continue playing since Elona+ is nice like that, but it lessens the accomplishment if you give yourself an easy out like that.
