Definitely recommend buying an office chair over any gaming chair.
I own an Aeron chair from Herman Miller, and it is literally one of the most comfortable chairs around. It's a bit expensive, but I do most of my work from my home office so it was easy to justify for me.

OP here. The reason I want one is because I have a bad habit of slumping in my chair and I'm worried I'm going to do permanent damage to my back soon. I thought maybe the shape of a gaming chair might help.

I love the mesh used for it. Always kept my back and bottom cool. Also it's a a lot more form fitting than one would expect.
If you can't afford a new one for about $800 you can buy a refurbished one for around $300 that will blow any gaming chair out of the water.

I've been thinking about renovating my setup and the chair is probably going to be the first thing I get since my current chair has ripped fabric and is missing an armrest. Since the setup I've been thinking about will probably be somewhat on the fancier side (Burgundy/Espresso theme), I was thinking about getting a leather chair like pic related but don't know how comfortable it would be for long hours of gameplay.

They come in three sizes.
I'm 6'1'' and I use the size B version and can comfortably rest my upper back on it. Although most of the time only my lower and mid back rest on the chair due to my normal posture.
Also I have a friend who is 6'5'' and he also has an Aeron (size C), and he can relax on his without a problem as far as I could see.

Super comfy for long term sitting. The only complaint one would have is that there isn't a headrest, and you can buy if you want to invest an additional 150. One day I will because I hear great things about them, but I love the chair without it

My suggestion is to be patient and watch local sale sites like Craigslist and Letgo, eventually you can find a used size c one for 200-300. Theyre just as good second hand most of the time because they hold up so well, just check things like the lumbar support to see if its in good condition (30 dollars new on ebay)

Anyway, don't fall for the gamer chair meme, the reason you see streamers and youtubers with them is because DXRACER hands them out like candy to market them. If anybody had a choice they'd be sitting in actual ergonomic chairs like an Aeron or steelcase Leap
