Activision owns Blizzard. They have been trying to push the Blizzard store/active loader for years, but due to it being WoW exclusive for so long, any attempt was shutdown by angry customers.

Regardless, it's still disgusting. People can supposedly see me when I'm playing the PS4 version of Diablo, but they can't join.

Monopolies can suck a dick, but installing a million launchers for 1-2 games is also fucking annoying. Imagine it: Steam, GOG Galaxy, Origin, Uplay, Battlenet, the Epic thing for UT, the Bethesda thing and it will only get worse
>>
>>377353809
The more companies distance themselves from steam the better.
>>
>>377354024
steam could have been killed ages ago during the green steam dark ages but ea, ubisoft, and microsoft actually managed to make their clients even bigger shitshows. uplay and origin have only just recently turned into dangerously decent clients but the proverbial well is long since poisoned and everyone is ensconced into steam's ecosystem. people love to cry monopoly and then turn around and get mad because they want all their games in place, you've made your bed now lie in it.

Admittedly, the battle.net launcher is very light and with Blizzard being pretty good about pushing large patches in the background before they go live you really don't even need to have battle.net start at system launch.
>>
>>377353809
So CoD WW2 and Crash will be sold exclusively through BNet too right?
>>
>>377355782
Steam has plenty of competition.
>>
>>377355782
>monopoly

you dont even know that world means. if there was a monopoly you could literally only buy games from steam and they would be the sole supplier. the "monopoly" is their social systems and exploiting everyone's compulsive need to have all their games in one place despite their being other platforms. you guys have memed uplay and origin for so many years you have actually created the "monopoly" yourselves because you refuse to try anything else because again you get mad when "i can't have it on steam." you did it to yourself.

you can safely bet destiny 2 will be a platform test for adoption rate for anything other than blizzard games. if the game takes off you can expect future cods to be off steam as well as activation taking all their legacy games off over the next few years and a substantial client overhaul into a full blown steam clone.

Steam is now notorious gambling and for having a shit ton with Early Scams and Asset flips. It also has the most toxic PC community ever. Are some games only available on Steam? Then Valve has a monopoly on those games on PC.

Hell, for so many games, even if you don't buy them from Steam you're cohered into using the platform to be able to play.

Which is just as true for other client infrastructure, and why there is actually no competition going on between them.

Don't really see a problem with it 2bh. I have plenty of space on my hard drive to install multiple game launchers.

It's slightly annoying to switch between the different ones, but with the adoption of discord it's pretty easy to have a unified friends list.

I think the only people that care about this sort of thing are turbo autists who need to have everything just so, and anime pro fagtrons that want people to notice their gay little profile page.

I like steam the most, I will always prefer it, but I don't really care about this sort of thing anymore.

Good. Maybe now Valve will have to improve Steam. Competition is always good.

There is no competition going on. None.

You're forced to use any and every client to access the games that come tied to them.
>>
Why are people heralding this as some kind of Steam wake up call when all that's happened is Blizzard added a single shit game to their roster that their business partners already own?

There are already alternatives out there that have a far bigger library. Blizzard adding ONE game isn't going to suddenly change anything.

The Taken King came out one year after the base game. If we assume it to be worth $20, that means the base game plus its first two DLCs with a total value of $100 were reduced to 1/5 their value with The Taken King's release.
Most games don't go on a permenant 80% sale one year after they release.
>>
>>377354361

Monopolies can suck a dick, indeed, but... there's no "but". Needing a thousand launchers isn't a symptom of competition; it's a symptom of exclusivity, which can also suck a dick.

The idea that Blizzard are going to start becoming a competitive online retailer because they are releasing a single game they already technically own through the Activision partnership is ludicrous.

Steam isn't the only digital retailer out there, Blizzard have no hope of competing in that environment considering other digital retailers are releasing new titles on a near daily basis. I guess the irony here is complaining about a Steam monopoly when it's clear from this that a Blizzard alternative would only sell Blizzard/Blizzactivision titles.
>>
>>377361651
>Most games don't go on a permenant 80% sale one year after they release.

Destiny stand alone would be about 30 bucks or so a year after, yeah.

This happens to most games.

With a bundle plus new dlc, it makes sense to sell it for 40
>>
>>377362227
Could you imagine the shitstorm if CoD ditched Steam for the Blizzard app?
>>
>>377362647
Unless they are seriously banking on the Blizzard app I doubt that'll happen. All I see forming from this is a Blizzard version of uPlay that exclusively sells Blizzard/Activision only titles. It won't be an alternative nor competitor to Steam, which obviously sells titles outside Valve.

>>
>>377362472
I wasn't aware that 20% of $60 was $30.

The last DLC prior to The Taken King was sold for $20 a mere four months before being added to that bundle with a supposed 80% discount. That's actually being incredibly generous, by the way, considering that it was much larger than the previous two DLCs that retailed for $20. It has much more in common with the expansion that came after it, Rise of Iron, which cost $30 at launch, leaving the base game + two DLCs at an astonishing 90% discount one year after the base game's launch. Looking at the DLCs' release dates is even worse.
No part of this is normal. Games do not drop in price this quickly, especially when they are still actively being supported.

And if PS4 did decide to add a launcher you would have no choice but to use it.

If Blizzard decides they want to create their own Origin I can choose not to use it.

Bethesda pulls PS4 modding and you have to deal with it.

Bethesda pulls their platform for PC modding and modding continues.

I'll take a free platform like that over console company monopoly any day.

https://www.vg247.com/2015/09/01/destiny-taken-king-which-edition-should-i-buy/
The Taken King expansion launched with a retail price of $40, not $30, the all inclusive edition was $60.
Given that that leaves $20 as the value of the base game and two DLCs, my original 20% was the correct figure.
My stance remains unchanged, this is abnormal and not to be encouraged.

>>
>>377365408

I'm pretty sure that's the idea. They're trying to create a community for Destiny 2 and will use the Blizzard community to do so. If it has the quality support from Blizzard to minimize hackers, cheaters and what not, it'll be a huge hit - assuming the game is actually good too. It'll have a more personal touch instead of just throwing it on Steam and let VAC do what it does.

Is this a good or bad thing, I wonder? Yeah, it's nice to have everything on Steam with one account, but I don't know. I'm not even bothered by Origin, Battlenet, or Uplay any more, for the most part. I wonder if we might end up better off with more competing platforms, maybe Steam sales will do a 180 and become less shit again. I've used Steam for 12 years, still like it, and have my mobile phone registered on it. However, maybe they need a little competition when they start having the gall to ask for phone numbers just to play a game. Then again, all that's going to happen is the other companies doing it too, like how online fees worked against the consumer through competition.
