Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" fix works as a no-cd crack as well, and is included in the pack.
If you use the NEW widescreen fixes mentioned in guide, the sh2proxy's EXE works as no-cd crack too.

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.
You can now see fine emulator settings for SH1 in the guide. You may also try the newer PGXP emulator for wobble-free PS1 graphics.

you've literally played one of the worst games in the whole series, and a total bastardization of the glorious quadrilogy the Team-Silent once created.

Yes, SH1-4 are all superb. Literally the pinnacle of oldschool survival horror genre, plus revolutionizers of the genre thanks to their themes and style.

Grab the games from the links above, and play them in release order. Preferably multiple times each, and never on Easy modes.
Forget anything you think you might have learned from the Origins. It's just like a horrible fanfic, made by ignorant morons who had to salvage an almost canceled project of another, even more incompetent team.
>>
>>377355292
Yes, although SH4's quality is debatable. You shouldn't skip the first game either.
>>
>>377355546

Yeah, that shit's full of bullshit. The audio difference ain't as extreme, and you can patch-in way better FMVs than in the PS2 version. Even the fog's been fixed by fanbase.

>>
>>377355560
#4 might be the weakest of the TS-original Silent Hill games, but it's still a great horror and SH-game. After that one though... I can only recommend Shattered Memories, with a small caution and open mind.
>>
>>377356102
Play it on ps2
>>
>>377356102
Both versions have their pros and cons, and it really goes to nit-picking zone.

PS2 versions are obviously the very originals, and you lose next to nothing by playing them.

However, the PC ports being legit PC games, and 15 years old at this point, they're piss easy to run even on craptops of yesteryears. At HD resolutions and stuff.

One reason to play the PC's SH2 would be seeing the Director's Cut -only new content (Born From A Wish -campaign, new end).

Just don't skip SH1 for any reason. It's a superb game, and very essential in the series' lore.
>>
>>377356102
PC ports of 2 and 3 are fine. 3 in particular has incredibly high res textures for its time. You'll need to patch SH2 to run on a single CPU core by downloading this:
https://thirteenag.github.io/wfp#sh2

I can't remember how good the SH4 port was though.

The game is built around a pretty good concept: there's a psychologist in it that tests your personality, and as you progress you'll see more and more of yourself projected onto the actual game. It can be something important and obvious such as an entire cutscene playing out differently, or something really subtle like graffiti on a wall. However, the game is unlike the original games so I wouldn't recommend if all you want is just more classic Silent Hill.
>>
>>377356658

Great premise with a solid introduction, but pretty messy execution as things went forward.

Loved a lot of the ideas it had, especially the early apartment sections, with Henry trying to reach the outside world and failing at every turn, but things start to feel more frustrating than scary when the ghosts and escort missions come into play.

I kind of have a soft spot for Downpour. It doesn't really compete with the originals, and it has the weakest monster designs in the series, but I kind of liked some of the ideas that an open-world Silent Hill had. Though it's ironic that all the best scares that I remember were completely optional to find.

At the very least it was trying to do its own thing.

The first one is decent but relies too much on the cult and it's terribly executed. This is what SH1 and SH3 do so well, even though both are all about the cult, you mostly interact with the results of their actions and not the cult itself.

Now the sequel is a genuine disaster, one of the worst movies ever made.

To be fair, you could boil most of the game's stories down like that if you wanted.

Harry wants to find his daughter. A wacky cult takes exception to that.

James is running away from something he doesn't want to admit. Pyramid Head takes exception to that.

Heather doesn't want to remember the past. Claudia takes exception to that, while the wacky cult takes exception to her.

Eh, it was an interesting idea that Walter was the real star of SH4, but I think they could have done more with Henry and the victims as well.

It was really odd for a Silent Hill game to have your character meet other survivors and not even make a big enough deal out of it for them to have a cutscene and talk to each other.

I get that Henry's quiet, but it feels like he doesn't even really care about what's going on half of the time.

I actually thought it was interesting change from how supporting casts were done in previous games. In the other Silent Hills it's pretty obvious that everyone you meet in town is off kilter. But in Shattered Memories, you're the only one who's acting strange because reality keeps shifting and none of your memories match up to what other people are saying.

Not to mention that, a lot of them might not even be real. Michelle's story basically mirrors Cheryl's, romanticizing the idea of someone who doesn't really exist in her life anymore, which might imply that she's another delusion, like Harry.

3 has such an obnoxious amount of enemies that you can't stop to appreciate the textures and artwork of the game

1 has a better OST and overall atmosphere

I kind of feel for Eddie. You get the feeling that he was some unstable bullied kid and the town gave him that final push over the edge.

Deep down the guy just wanted to be left alone with his pizza.
>>

>1 doesn't have an opnoxious amount of enemies
Did you forget all the mumblers it tosses at you like 10 at a time?

Downpour has...

>>
>>377368929

>>
>>377370576
See, the way I see it, is that the down kinda let's you play into your fantasy in 2. You can play into it (Maria ending, killing people as Eddie) or you can reject it and become a better person(or kill yourself, which would be James coming to terms with what he really wants). Eddie fails this by killing over and over, and eventually falls apart because of this.

>>377370636
I like Murphy more than Travis, Downpour doesn't fuck up the story on SH1 unlike Origins. I love the look of the Downpour otherworld, even if it isn't scary. Origins is just bland all around and leaves a bad taste. Downpour is generally worse on average, but has a few high points:
Sewer side quest
The fucking play puzzle
...I kinda like how he went into other's nightmares and was the boogeyman for the coplady?
>>
>>377370595
Mumblers are easily avoided, not like the million slurpers you encounter on tight halls on SH3

If anything i'd argue that dogs and air screamers were the real pain in the ass in SH1 but it's still not nearly as recurrent as in SH3
>>
>>377370885
I ran from nearly every enemy in the halls in SH3 consistently. The only time I fought was in the rooms when it couldn't be avoided. I felt like SH1 had more enemies you had to fight, especially in the sewer.
>>
>>377370880
Oh right, I did like the play puzzle. I do think that Murphy being Anne's bogeyman would have been better if the DLC actually came out or if the comic came out on time though.

>(Lisa banging kauffman? Fucking really?)
He was her dealer, so I wouldn't say it was a huge stretch for them to have had relations.

It bothered me more that characters like Lisa didn't really do anything in Origins. She has no connection to Travis or the main plot, she just kind of keeps popping up and then doesn't really show up again in the end. It just felt kind of fanservicey.
>>
Downpour doesn't even have Akira yamaoka it's not a silent hill game. Even the worst silent hills like origins shit on downpour. It's nonsensical and broken and unplayable. What a fucking travesty.

This game made me mad as fuck.

Remember the scream Murphy does when hes being chased or hit? What the fuck?
>>
>>377371052
Its a neat concept, but badly implemented. It was way better done in 2. Eddie thinks you are egging him on, and you appear as Angela's mom for a moment both of which were way better done.
>>
>>377370973
Oh yeah the sewers were pretty bad, i'll agree on that

I just feel like SH3 wasted away a lot of potential with adding so many enemies, I also ran from most enemies in halls but that meant i had no time to stop and appreciate the work that had gone in the textures and artwork which is one of the major things that draws me to SH.

I felt SH1 had a much better atmosphere that encouraged running through and excellent ost that makes you feel paranoid or panicked while SH2 has the appeal of SH3 and it actually gives you time to appreciate it
>>
>>377371316
My other reasoning for why I like 3 more than 1 is here:

>town kinda let's you play into your fantasy in 2
But Maria was sick in the end too, like Mary. So I don't think it's the town just indulging their wishes in the end if they buy into it. Though self-loathing seems to fuel the town's delusions for the three people drawn to it. Less about the town wanting to punish people, and more like it lets them do all the damage to themselves.

While Laura is probably just chilling out exploring a perfectly normal resort town.

SH4 is about autism, social anxiety and hikikomori behavior. Henry is just disconnected from everything and everyone even when there are creatures from hell wandering around.

I mean I like that part of the series too, SH2 is my favorite, but they disregard stuff from the other games to try and make that is what the series is about. Like, maybe they never saw Twin Peaks neither, because growing up watching that gave me the perfect point of view to look at Silent Hill from that angle I feel that it was intended.

The thing is that Alessa does that because she is special. Harry, Kaufmann, Lisa, Dahlia all experience Alessa's hell, because the otherworld is Alessa's creation.

Whenever a "How would you survive in Silent Hill" thread shows, some smartass always replies "i never did anything bad and i don't fear anything, so nothing would happen to me lol", which is completely missing the point of the games.

Walter, the orphanage and the circular prison are all mentioned in SH2 though. I even recall reading some pretty cool theories about the Walter Sullivan's grave in SH2.

Getting to see the circular prison with your own eyes is a huge disappointment nonetheless. When i read about a "circular structure" in the middle of the Toluca Lake, i imagined this hellish industrial nightmare, especially after it's implied the energy comes from the depths of the lake itself.

SH4 causes more harm than good with all the teleporting around and Walter's personal otherworld. It breaks so many rules of the lore and doesn't even take place in Silent Hill, it really would be better if it wasn't a Silent Hill game and was simply called The Room.

If I was president of a company like EA or something, I would do whatever I could to get people who are passionate about the games they made under my label, regardless of actual skill.

There were people making the original Silent Hill that literally didn't go home. They stayed past close of business and slept on the floor when they couldn't keep going. People who are passionate about what they are doing like that just need to be given a canvas and time. Skill will come with experience, and as long as you let them pursue their passions, you know you'll get a product with a cult following, at minimum.

Having entire teams of people like that would certainly be an investment, but it would almost certainly pay off over time.

I wish I had more to add for SH3, but I don't actually remember the soundtrack nearly as much. To be fair, it has been a while since I've replayed it.

Forgot to put that one in. The entire cutscene is amazing.

The ambience of SH is my favourite thing about the music. It's always nice to have it playing in the background, because it melts so well. Making Peace (Silent Hill 2) captures it perfectly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zmqx9OfNcGA

I forgot to attach a .gif to this post. That being said, does anybody have any more SH .gifs/.webms? I saved a couple of these from many months ago, but they're only SH1.

The ambiance of the SH OST is genuinely great and atmospheric. SH2's OST in particular is pretty emotional and evokes some feelings.
