There's only 3 items that are completely unretreavable but everything else can either be failed puzzles that can be reset in the secret optional area for cash or just by reloading your save. There's also achievements for hearing all the dialogue from Xelpud/Mulbruk as well as getting all the emails, but some of the dialogue can only be heard at certain plot intervals (and due to the non-linear nature of la-mulana, it's based off of a point-system counter. This was so that you would get hints from these characters when you actually needed them) Overall those are just achievements and you can get those with SAM if you really wanted to.

Hollow Knight is the perfect example of how NOT to make a metroidvania. It's nothing but stupidly easy platforming sections with nothing to distract you because all you can do is run and jump. There's no puzzles to think about, or fancy space physics to play with, or actually threatening enemies to worry about. You just run around reading some gay story written by some indie retard who thinks endless melancholy is good writing.

The two items that are locked off are locked off because the final area goes through a "change" when every boss is defeated. During this change, the treasure chest for two items disappears. The two items are a health upgrade and a software that does something secret. Basically, you want to explore the final area before beating every boss, which a lot of players end up doing anyway.

Not him but first: Play La-mulana, second: he makes a good point that the game lacks any consistency between gameplay and its atmosphere/narrative, something that SM, SotN, and LM all mastered and ended up making the gameplay more fun and satisfying as a result. Hollow Knight doesn't take the same steps to make the gameplay satisfying, it's really worse than a walking simulator because the gameplay is forced in instead of being natural.
