if you're in the uk (or anywhere else in europe) the 1060 seems to be quite a bit cheaper. i'd say get the 1060 3gb.
i'd recommend saving up for the 6gb version though. it'll allow you to run all those super high quality texture mods/texture packs in the future.

amd are retarded as hell. they could have sold both the rx 480 and rx 580 with the 480 being the cheaper option and the 580 being the more premium option. they decided to stop 480 production and make 580s only instead and the price of the 580's is way, way more expensive than the 1060 despite only being 2.5% faster on average across 27 games (source: HUB). i'm assuming it's more expensive because it uses higher binned chips to achieve the stable higher clocks on all models.

This. I play at 1440p with a 2GB one so most newer games I have to play at like medium settings or less depending on how poorly optimized it is. I can still play well optimized 3D games at max or near Max settings at 1440p and 60fps with it though. I'll wait until the next line of GPUs come out before upgrading, this has been going strong for like 4 years.

at 4GB you are hitting the wall in most AAA games. You can get 1080P at barely just 60fps.

i'm playing Prey, one of the most recent games to release and even with everything maxed out the game still uses barely over 3gb. lowering the settings by one notch will probably bring this down into the 2gb range which is fine for the massive majority of video cards.

are you stupid? the 1060 is over 15% faster than the 970 on average. it requires a 970 at 1500 mhz to match a stock 1060. overclocked vs overclocked the 1060 smokes the 970. this doesn't mean the 970 is a bad card but the generational leap to the 10xx series is huge.

going from a 960 to a 1060 is equivalent of going from the 960 to a 980. going from a 970 to 1070 is equivalent of going from a 970 ti a titan x/980 ti.

I fucked up too when buying a 970, but I haven't found a single game that uses more than 3.5gb of vram at 1080p.

The only weird case is Resident 7 that can use over 4gb of vram if you have shadow cache on or texture quality on very high (that actually doesn't affect texture quality, there is no difference between medium - vhigh, what it does is store more textures in the vram to avoid pop-in).

And with my setup I can run most games over 100fps. on vhigh settings, sometimes ultra. (avoid ultra settings shadows tho).

I will upgrade when I feel like upgrading to 1440p. Not soon anyways, because japan seems to be stuck in the past and still releasing shit made for 1080p, locked at 60fps.
