You're right, T-34s broke down on their own. The lifetime mileage of a T-34 was 300 miles. The extremely expensive aluminum T-34 transmission was so fucking terrible that after 100 miles T-34 crews would have to work together to pull the gummed-up gearshift.

i think there was one battle where the sovies lost a hundred tanks more than they actually had, by their own records.

there's so much comedy hidden in soviet records. i think my favorite is the one where a guy was shot by a firing squad then buried in a shallow hole. he somehow was still alive and went back to his unit, where he was arrested again and the same firing squad has to actually kill him.

i can only imagine the look on the commissar's exasperation at the lack of socialist competence.
