The average consumer plays shitty mobile games. The simple point is that this game has some pull in the Japanese gaming market. It isn't going to sell earth-shattering numbers, but it beat out Dragon Quest on Amazon in Japan. I don't know how often those rankings get updated but I'd assume it's fairly frequent. So it certainly doesn't mean that it's going to outsell Dragon Quest, but it is still a good sign.

I don't think they were terrible, just not fully fleshed out. They were both amiibo experiments that didn't work out too well. I liked HHD but it should have just been a full ACNL update and AF should have just been a free app for you to mess with your amiibos in, or at least no more than $10.
HHD had a lot of really good ideas and improvements and I think the next AC is going to be great with what they've learned through it. Probably not too common an opinion but I absolutely love Amiibo cards and hope they do more with them. Nothing was more fun than going around with my friends and buying packs, then trading and shitting our pants when we got our favourites. That's the kind of DLC I can condone, since you actually physically own it and get neat benefits.

All those things could be added in an expanded version with new weapons, new modes and new singleplayer story. Most people don't do preorders, they just enter on the store and buy the game. I don't think Arms will be the next Splatoon, but it definitely has a lot of appeal among casuals and hardcores, which are both big markets in Japan, also it will be released at the beginning of Switch's life with little competition and an audience hungry for new games, especially multiplayer games. I think Arms could do some nice 500k in Japan when all is said and done.

I'm talking about Japan only here and only the first year. Dragon Quest XI will sell around 1,8kk this year and PS4's install base will help it a lot while Switch's install base will hurt Splatoon 2's potential pretty bad, I think it will end up selling something like 1,2kk this year.
