The story is complete garbage, it's borderline nonexistent and what little there is gets slammed in your face over and over. The party members just kind of exist separately, their dialogue doesn't really play off of each other if that makes any sense, it suffers from a lot of the problems DD2 had if you played that.

The gameplay a step backwards from the Vita remakes of D3 and especially D4, a lot of the new shit they added just doesn't work right and is either broken as fuck or completely worthless. It really sucks, a lot of the new additions could have been cool if they were balanced better

1) You don't miss out on anything by playing this first. All the cameo characters that would usually be important in the post-game were relegated to DLC with their own little skits. You might not get a couple of those but it's nothing important.
2) Main story, ie "completing" the game and doing the story parts of the post-game should take about 60-70h. If you don't want to touch the post-game at all you can finish in like 30-40h.
3) You play through the campaign/story maps and after you defeated the final boss of that you enter the postgame where the rest of the story and meat of the gameplay is.

Best gameplay mechanics hands down.
The only thing it was missing was that Post-Game isn't as expansive as the others, but that's because they went full jew with the DLC characters originally. Switch version comes with all the DLC characters, but the only real Post-Game material is Item World and Land of Carnage, and the obligatory Baal super battle.

Characters are hit or miss. I found them mostly inoffensive, but some people think they're lame. Killia is kind of boring as an MC but he has a neat design and one of the coolest reveals in the series, so it's alright.

This motherfucker is probably one of the better villains in the NISverse though. One of the few "final" bosses that didn't turn out to be a complete fraud or pushover in the end.

Item Duping is still there in the form of a Mystery Room in the Item World. Farming Stat Serums with Metallia or a Mic'd up Sage is absolutely disgusting, right after finishing the game you can unlock the Asagi map and farm Serums, abusing the cheat shop it will take you maybe 2 hours to get a generic lv150 unit up to 20m in every stat letting you completely skip most of the postgame's progression and one shotting the final fight with Void.
As far as generics vs uniques are concerned it was always very balanced in the other games, here they decided to give uniques Overloads like being able to take three actions during their turn (Kilia), a 50% damage increase ontop of getting +50% to every stat (Red Magnus), +200% attack power and 32 movement for a turn (Adell), letting you take another action if your turn killed someone (Priere), or a Land Decimator that captures everything it kills (Metallia). That's ontop of the unique evilities a lot of them possess that you can't pass on to generics that are also largely more powerful than pretty much everything generics have access to.
There is a tremendous powergap between the uniques and generics in this game, the one exception to that is the Sage since they get access to Land Decimator. Otherwise you will pretty much only use them early on to steal shit, and then later on as pure support units.

That's so inconsistent and unreliable that it might as well not be there. Compare that to the Paw Stick and other shit previous games had.

Pretty much no characters in previous games had abilities as broken as those that you posted, which means you don't need them to play the game at all. D5 is garbage, the only one worse than it is DD2, can confirm.

There is good and bad kinds of broken though. A bad kind of broken would be something like an underflow glitch that after you set it up lets you kill anything in one hit, a good kind of broken is something like the diagonal throwing that was later on even picked up as a proper mechanic. D5 has a lot of stuff that falls under that first category that just doesn't make it very fun to play in my opinion.

For me these games are fun because you are putting in work and growing stronger and stronger without any clear limit. D5's limits on the other hand are extremely easy to hit. A lot of their new mechanics could be lots of fun if playing around with them would actually give you any kind of benefit, but due to their fuck ups you can hit the stat and attack damage modifier caps completely naked without wearing any kind of equipment with minimal effort required. You can completely ignore half the systems in the game and still one shot LoC Baal with ease only hours after you beat the main story, it's a fucking shame

That's true. I don't really see how anyone that played the other games can prefer D5 to them but weirder things exist. If you just want to play through the game for the stories sake and then move on that's fine, but that's never what Disgaea was about. Leveling up and getting stronger as you learn post game systems is what I enjoy from this series, but since I didn't go online to read the most optimal way of doing everything I still haven't defeated Baal with 100~ hrs of gameplay.

The maps the Switch will probably struggle with aren't until later on in the postgame and Item World. There is one map in particular that has an army of 100 enemies pitted against you that was kinda laggy even on the PS4, I can't imagine it running any better on the Switch port.
