Items stopped being fun after Melee, they're just dumb now. Some newer items like pitfalls are tolerable but then you have shit like the Gust Jar which is just a win button more or less. Item-less Smash is more fun regardless.

All in all, smash 4 is pretty well balanced. There are a few characters that are too strong and a few that are too weak, but even mid and lower tier characters can fare well in tournament.

It's amazing to me that even post-Nerf diddy is one of the absolute best characters. Down tilt to upsmash is so free.

I actually agree with this. For all the flack Melee gets for being a competitive spegfest, it handled the casual side of things extremely well.

Almost every item in Melee felt really good to use, and the only ones that were anywhere near OP were the bob-omb, hammer, and sometimes pokeball. With bombs and pokeballs you've always got time to react and if you die from them it's ultimately your fault. If someone gets a hammer and you manage to hit them with a low attack, you can juggle them really easily and basically get a free KO. The hammer is great because using it actually does come with a lot of risk if you're playing against someone good who knows the timing to get in between hammer swings.

Stage hazards matter and impact the fight but other than the ice climber and maybe g&w stages are never intrusive. Unlike the obnoxious fucking boss characters or the shitty nabbit (he's easy ti escape from, but still interrupts the flow of battle which is just annoying).

In Smash 4 you can only have like 2-3 pokeball mons out at a time, unlike Melee where you can set them to cery high and go crazy with them. It's absurd you cant do that in 4 since other than only super shrooms in giant mode and only bomb items on high, pokeballs only on high is like the first thing people do if they want a crazy, fun, goofy casual round.

Tourneyfag melee is fun but I'm mostly a casual fuck and it's still my favorite smash just because I think it did everything so much better than the others except character balance

But really, casual melee is underrated.

Here's what they should have done desu :
Keep shulk's moveset but change his neutral B to cloud's limit charge, have it inflict damage as a cost (this would be battle soul)
Once charged all moves would change to monado arts, limit break style ;
-back slash to monado buster
-air slash to monado purge
-battle soul (neutral charge) to cyclone or something

Down B would stay as a counter. Just give Shulk Cloud's mechanics, they're perfect.
Can't complain though, Shulk being in at all is a miracle.

It's a shame it was still kinda janky and weird feeling in the final release (honestly the build before the final one felt better to me), because it really was quite balanced, and the stuff they did with some of the characters was actually really great. Zelda and Ivysaur in particular felt fucking amazing and were both incredibly unique.

Like, the engine of the final build wasn't QUITE there yet, but the changes made to the characters were all fantastic. I don't think PM is the best smash overall, but I think it has the best versions of each character's movesets.

Man I miss PM. If they'd been able to keep working on it then I think it really could've been the best smash game. If someone told me it was their favorite as is I could honestly see where they're coming from.
