Fuck, the very first scene in which Max is supposed to go to the bathroom, you literally cannot do anything BUT go to the bathroom. I thought, hey, maybe if I fuck around and don't go right away, that'll change the story and have some actual consequences, maybe even a fail state! lolnope, nothing happens until you go to the bathroom and play out the scripted event, and the event will replay over and over until you do it the "right" way.

This is not a game about making independent decisions, it's about following directions.

Its fun to see time travel explored in fiction but it always ends up kind of dumbed down to appeal to the lowest common denominator, I'd like to see a well thought out time travel story where your actions do really butterfly effect the plot and the repercussions aren't always telegraphed to all hell.

Won't count on it though.

That's in part why the ending sucked, they HAD to get to a certain point and couldn't go back and change anything about the previous episodes to improve the cohesiveness of the story since they already released them. It's a problem with the episodic format in general, you basically write yourself into a corner and can't go back and revise anything.

Your choices really don't matter and the gameplay consists of watching cutscenes and examining objects. It bills itself as a game that is heavily affected the player's choices, but the game gives the player next to no freedom and room in which to actually make any meaningful decisions. You can't deviate from the narrative, which is exactly the kind of choice and decision-making that results in meaningful change in a story-heavy game. Old adventure games had puzzles and shit and usually let the player explore to an extent, this is, for lack of a better term, an interactive storybook.

Totally fine if you liked the story, I don't care, I just thought it was a poor game. It didn't let me make 90% of the decisions I wanted to make, such as simply going anywhere but where the game tells me I need to go. I didn't expect a huge open-world or anything like that, I expected a game that sells itself on the idea of player choice affecting the story allowing the player to make more independent decisions that aren't mandated by the narrative. Ignoring certain things resulting in a fail state, blowing off a character at a critical plot point changing the story, things like that, but instead the game just waits for you to do what it tells you to do.

Look, man, I've played the game right through to completion. It's not good. In fact, it's pretty bad on the whole. Sure, it can have its moments, I thought the bit with Kate (I think that's her name) where your powers are torn away from you was particularly good.

However, the game banks on me really investing in a character like Chloe, but I never made any sort of connection with her. You're told constantly throughout the game that Max and her are close, yet I never really felt that way myself, she's obnoxious, hard-headed, annoying, with very few (if any) redeeming qualities. It really cheapens the payoff of the game's story when you finally get to that point. (Which is another terrible can-of-worms in and of itself that I may touch upon in another post.)

The game also doesn't know how it wants to characterise the supporting cast a lot of the time. Take Chloe's step-father, as an example, between episodes he jumps between outright unforgivable to sympathetic in his depiction, and it feels jarring.

Overall it's a poorly-written, often poorly-delivered mess that fails to deliver what could have been an interesting game (or 'game' if you're that bothered by definition.)
