That's really not much of a surprise. Say what you will about those games, but they had interesting characters that were much more fleshed out than past games relatively speaking, thanks to the support system. In past games, hardly anyone besides Lords and other plot important characters had nearly as much character development as the average Fates character. That being the case, it makes sense people would be more attached to Fates and Awakening characters.
