NINTENDO CENSORING THINGS AGAIN
>>
Why don't they just patch the animation out of the triggered nations, instead of removing it completely?
>>
children's game. this hand gesture is similar to flipping the bird, so not sure why people are sperging out over it being removed from a game for kids.
>>
>>377304432
I can't believe Nintendo removed an offensive gesture from a game rated E.
Fucking sell outs
>>
They did pretty much exactly the same thing back with Super Mario RPG
>>
You need to remember that Nintendo aren't the ones at fault here. They're censoring it because sooner or later some fucking moron will take offense to it.

I remember back in the 80's Nintendo used to censor anything which might have caused offense - even changing the names of stupid inconsequential things like the HOLY spell in Final Fantasy.

Nintendo know fine well that it's the parents who control the purse strings and it ultimately the parents who will decide what their kids will play. So it's best to keep them onside.

It's worth noting that back in the day, Nintendo kept a firm eye on censorship. Meanwhile, SEGA did not give a fuck and happily shilled games with people getting their spines fucking ripped out and bitches getting raped.

Next thing you know, the entire goddamn gaming industry is standing before congress, asked to explain themselves and eventually a new strict age rating system gets put in place.

Don't blame Nintendo for censorship, they're just protecting themselves from idiots.
>>
>>377306314
>Meanwhile, SEGA did not give a fuck and happily shilled games with people getting their spines fucking ripped out and bitches getting raped.
>rated E for everyone
>>
>>377304609
Because the game is the same version in all countries.
>>
Personally I'm not sure why this was ever made like this to begin with, it's not even a pose they use in the splatoon game.
Still dumb.
>>
>people more triggered about them removing it from a kid's game than by it staying

god you people are pathetic
>>
>>377306314
yeah nice reddit spacing
>>
>>377305739

I can't tell whats going on here. In the Japanese version is he crossing his arms and pouting? The American version looks like he's angry/raging. That doesn't seem like the same thing as OP to me.
>>
>>377304432
Isn't that some kind of offensive gesture? Sort of like how Valve had to change the L4D2 cover for the UK release because they weren't aware that the cover was basically saying fuck you.
>>
@377304432

argument about censorship are important, censorship is shit, it sucks and nintendo is one of the biggest group of culprit about it

it's a good thing that there is now a group of people that actively cares about this sort of thing big enough to raise a stink, so can you retard can stop try false flagging this group over and over for easy (You)?
>>
>>377307113

The japanese version is using a pose that's usually associated with saying "up yours", so they changed it for the western versions

A similar pose was used for the squiddo in Mario kart so they've changed that too

That is the real crime, Mallow sucks dick.
>>
>>377307373
>Isn't that some kind of offensive gesture?
indeed it is. the real story should be about nintendo failing to realize this before adding it to their game.

I'm sure at some point they'll add pic related and pretend like they didn't know it was offensive.
>>
>if they didn't censor the game, SJW triggered and they got sued
>if they censored the game, /v/ triggered and nothing happen

you know which will be better
>>
>>377304432
Does that gesture mean something different in Japan?
>>
>>377307636
>they didn't know it was offensive.
You probably don't know yourself how many of your moves are seen as obsene elsewhere.
>>
>>377307742
No it means the same thing. But the Japanese don't mind having a squid loli elbow-deep in their assholes.
>>
>>377307742
I've seen it as a victory pose or something else in games but I think it's more light hearted than in most European insults. Like usually something with wrestling is what I've mostly seen before.

Its the japanese version of flexing your bicep
>>
>>377307742
In America and Japan both its showing off your muscles
>>
>>377307910
Yeah, I could swear I've seen that gesture in an some anime where a character did it to signify being proud of their strength, superior skill (like they've just bested someone in some kind of contest), or something like that.
>>
>>377305739
Japs can't learn from their mistakes, no wonder they got nuked twice
>>
>>377308114
No, in America it's similar to giving someone the finger, basically saying "fuck you" with a gesture.
>>
>>377305258
"up yours" isn't an offensive gesture. in fact, it's the kind of gesture you'd have seen by a bully in a children's show in the nineties, precisely because it's an acceptable "fuck you."

that we are now at a point where even this has to be sanitized for muh keedz is fucking insane.
>>
>>377308145

This just makes sense desu, nothing to do with social justice.
>>
>>377308260

Actually if you look closely at the "we can do it" poster you can see that Rosie is pulling her sleeve back rather than using the "fuck you" gesture.
>>
>>377308723
In the poster she is folding her sleeve but that poster has been parodied a dozen times without it, making that exact gesture.

Right, but outside of Europe it isn't an offensive gesture

I live in Japan, it's a really common gesture, and when I was a kid in America it was also fairly common and completely benign

The game is basing it off of Rosie, not the offensive European gesture

Why do such conservative countries in the middle east have so many offensive gestures?
>>
>>377310419
The origin was an insult used by British longbowmen against the French. When bowmen got captured the French would have their two fingers cut off so they could no longer pull their bow. So it was basically a "fuck you I've still got my fingers haha" gesture

not sure why it cropped up again 600 years later

>>
>>377310567
Yes. The difference is intent. It's not like calling someone a faggot, the gesture in the OP is much less direct, and a lot friendlier. It doesn't even look the same. It is going to become impossible for people to grab their arm in anything directed at children now? Hell, it's much more common in our culture for people to feel their own muscles as well as others' in order to compare them.
>>
>>377310596
If you're just slapping your bicep no one will care, at least not in Japan or America. Pumping your fist at them might upset them, but once again any gesture can be offensive if you do it right

Slapping the bicep with an upwardly bent arm does not immediately register as "fuck you" to most Americans. Thrusting the arm might, but only because it mimes actual fucking. Regardless, the gesture is apparently tame enough to feature in a PG movie.
>>
Wait a minute. Isn't the showing muscle gesture pointing to the side, while the insult gesture is pointing it forward?
>>

I learned about it in Age of Empires. Then again in 7th grade.

Oh, in that case, kudos on your foreign education. Agincourt had some pretty cool shit, like those mini-stake things the archers used to defend themselves from being charged.
>>
>>377311632
A PG movie from the 70s, before PG-13 existed. Rocky would undoubtedly have been PG-13 if released today.
Besides, you can say fuck in PG-13 movies. Does that mean you think swearing would acceptable for Mario Kart? It's an offensive gesture that should probably not be in a kid's game.
>>
>>377311580
And? American movies back then would borrow European gestures to get around censorship laws, like using the French thing with the OK sign. Nobody nowadays uses it, and few Americans likely know that it's meant to be offensive

Also not the same gesture as the one in the op
>>
>>377311405
The distinction is that it's not rated R, which is the only rating where blatant displays of "fuck you" gestures are allowed. Not to mention "screw you" is the tamed version of "fuck you", with a tame gesture to go along with it. For the millionth time, most Americans never use that gesture, and the only thing resembling it would be a bicep grab used to display your muscles, which is what the fucking OP is. Both Japan and America understand that the gesture is a display of strength (which is why Rosie the riveter keeps popping up), why are Bongs such idiots?
>>
>>377311979
Now you can. You couldn't say fuck when PG 13 was first created, and you couldn't say fuck in PG movies ever
>>
>>377311580
>Arm thrust that mimes actual fucking
>OP is a bicep grab that shows off her muscles, particularly her shoulder
So, not only is the gesture acceptable in a PG movie, but it's not even the same gesture as the OP? Fucking hell, are all bongs this retarded?

It's really not. Call of Duty is a kids game. Mario kart is mostly adults playing. And if the game had a 12 rating it would still be totally fine, and children could still play it regardless. To find this offensive youa ctually got to be an adult with baby diapers.
Prove me wrong. Show me 1 child complaining. Soccer moms dont count.
>>
>>377312092
I would say most Americans who aren't autistic shut-ins know what the gesture means. And even if only Europeans see the gesture as offensive, why should that stop it from being removed? Even if you hate Europeans, they are still valid video game customers.

It was only censored in Germany and the UK, and for different reasons. The German edition was changed so that the thumb wasn't missing. The UK one was changed so that it was swapped round.
>>
>>377312382
Europeans adding weird meanings to harmless gestures and ruining them for the rest of the world doesn't rub you the wrong way?

Imagine if we had to cut thumbs up from games to appeal middle-easterners

Also why do you expect Americans to know it? Do Brits know what gestures are offensive in Japan? Or Brazil?
>>
>>377312173
In addition to that having no relevance to whether a kid's racing game should have a screw you gesture, you are incorrect. Movie rating systems have never had hard rules. For example, 1983 movie The Right Stuff included the word Fuck, and it was rated PG.

>I would say most Americans who aren't autistic shut-ins know what the gesture means
Why would they? The gesture is almost never used in the US, and most popular culture consumption is internal. If anything, people who spend more time on the internet are more likely to come across it.

Also, we've established that the American/Japanese bicep grab is a different gesture (although superficially similar) to the British "fack yoo."

And there is a difference between respecting gestures deemed offensive in civilized countries versus acquiescing to the insane demands of barbaric Middle Eastern countries.

Think of the system as a barometer for what Americans consider vulgar, not a hard rule system. The fact is, the vast majority of PG movies had to toned-down vulgarity. In Rocky's case, the gesture accompanies "screw you," which is a toned-down "fuck you." Plus, the arm thrust is exaggerated, whereas the bicep grab in the OP doesn't have an exaggerated thrust motion. They're different gestures.

Bwcause in Japan (and most of America) the gesture just means "yeah, I'm a tough person". It is grabbing one's bicep, whereas the offensive version in Europe is placing one's hand or wrist in the back of the elbow joint.

Europe was just to dumb to see a difference.

It's pretty clear he was saying that arbitrary ratings distinctions of the MPAA have no relevancy to whether a particular hand gesture should be allowed in Mario Kart. It's perfectly understandable that he wouldn't want to reiterate himself to people lacking reading comprehension skills.
>>
>>377308204
No, that is a European thing. America has such a huge mix of cultures that it is a toss up for which meaning it will carry, and must be determined by context.
>>
>>377312952
The screw you gesture being discussed right now? That's almost never used in American media, and Americans don't consume much foreign media either.

It was a thing though, at least in parts of the country. I'm an oldfag from Boston. The Italian Americans there used the screw you gesture frequently throughout the 70s-90s. Plenty of Americans still see understand the gesture, even if you personally do not.
>>
>>377313040
Because bongs went "Oi!!! That's a right improper gesture there, innit?!" You think Nintendo is gonna bother explaining the cultural differences of the gesture to a bunch of angry Brits, or just say fuck it and change the animation?

They've been doing this for decades, people. Bowser did the gesture way back in Super Mario RPG and they changed it outside of Japan. Remember that America is not the only country on Earth, no matter how much you wish it was, and courtesy and respect needs to be shown to different cultures. If that makes you outraged because you don't give a fuck about other people, that's your problem.
