Just finished it last week, very great game, but the last two bosses kinda ruined the ending. All the rat race, meh.

The combat/alchemy and the whole interface needed a lot of time to get used to, but I ended up liking it a lot.

Yeah 1's interface is "intimidating" at first but after a while it starts to make sense and is very comfortable to use. 2's interface is just abysmal, 3's is a little bit better but still not nearly as functional as 1's.

On a technical level? Sure. But they have that charm which makes graphics timeless.

Yeah I just hated the whole chasing and them just teleporting away and spawning adds. If they can teleport so well why didn't they teleport away when I was about to kill them? But I really liked how it tied in the story with Alvin

No; I never finished it. I dropped it when your main quest involves helping with the preparations for a wedding and I was forced to walk through a boring meadow.

nostalgia, I played all TES games, besides arena, when they were released and there is nothing good about Oblivion besides maybe the remnants of freedom it had and an amazing expansion.

What happened to Geralt's face throughout the games? In witcher 1 he was pale and kinda ugly, since canonicaly witchers are pale mutants. But by witcher 3 he turned into a total fuckboy face.
>>
>>377301482
It just has too many bizarre design choices. Like the entirety of the combat/XP/level scaling system, the fact that you can instantly fast travel to all of the cities as soon as you get out of the sewer AND making the start point right next to the biggest city of the game is absurd in my opinion. I can't be bothered to list all the flaws because there's no point in doing so but those were my biggest gripes when I first played oblivion.
>>
>>377301173
i can't really say i liked the combat but i got used to it, W2 being more action oriented was a legit improvement but the roly poly hell made me cringe a bit.
W3 i just can't get into it, the combat just feels more clunky and unresponsive that the previous ones

Prior to TW3 coming out, TW2 was just starting to come into its own with people starting to recognize how good it was.

But after TW3 came out the title was dragged through the mud yet again by new players trying it out for the first time. The general consensus here nowadays is that it's terrible, which couldn't be more wrong.

I used to think TW1 was much better than TW2, but after repeated playthroughs of both games it's apparent that TW2 is the winner. Certain things were done more poorly, namely the UI, needing to meditate to drink/craft potions (and not being able to meditate in combat), not being telegraphed the nature of the enemy you were about to face before fighting it, the medallion cooldown period as opposed to TW1's just holding alt to highlight all interactables, etc. Some things were done differently but just as good in my opinion, like how the atmospheres and premises were completely different. TW1 was a game where you were just being a Witcher, doing conventional Witcher work, free to roam the city quarters to your hearts content, and experience both city and country life in the same general area. TW2 is a much more focused/charged experience where you move from one setpiece to another in a much less relaxed fashion, with a politically driven plot and only brief moments of respite.

Looking back now, TW2 was the better and more memorable game. Flotsam had so much atmosphere and goings on. The docks where the shipments came in, the main square (where if you quell Iorveth's rebellion actually turns into a nice celebration area), the inn (that has more character than the inns in TW3 imo), that dwarven bookseller that sells actually useful books, the barbicans that guard the entrances to the forest with actual guards stationed there, the underground fighting ring in Loredo's estate, the haunted hospital/asylum in the forest, etc. The sense of danger lurking outside the town walls accentuated the town's charms. Vergen was great too.
>>
>>377301921
I don't know, it's a lost game design for some reason. Hell Skyrim has carts for traveling to cities by default but I guess that wasn't enough. Even making the fast travel teleport like a skill or spell would have been better and made more sense, like the more you improve the teleport skill the further and more often you could teleport. I don't know.

I guess they thought nobody wants to play as an ugly dude. Witcher 2 had a good balance in my opinion.
>>
>>377301927
Even Henselt's camp which I hated at first, becomes very charming once you figure out the lay of the land and get to fully experience it from both branches of the game (Roche and Iorveth's).

And the twisting ravines outside Vergen are great too. Loc Muinne is by far the worst setting in the game, even worse if you didn't side with Roche, but everything until then is pure gold. The game gets much more palatable if you treat it like a road trip (boat trip), since you're essentially just traveling down the same river throughout the whole game.

One other issue that TW2 has that neither TW1 or TW3 has, is the ability to play in ultrawide resolution, probably due to some console limitation. That is my only real criticism in retrospect because things like the potion/meditation cease to be issues once you know the game.

>>
W1>W2>W3
This is the only correct view, they're all great, but I think 1 is has the most consistently good story, where as I think W3 is just completely uninteresting both from the finding Ciri, and the Wild Hunt.
The actual questlines the Velen and Hearts of Stone are excellent, but these large gaps of the main story where you're just on this boring fetch quest to find Ciri is just terrible. Also the fact that you can't turn the sorcerers to Radvoid is just such a wasted opportunity.

W2 is good overall and the only reason it's so low isn't story wise but because I had technical problems, like in act 3 I had some sort of save bloat where it just took minutes to load, and having jumping and interacting being limited to outside of combat meant you got stuck in it occasionally. And act 3 in general is just nowhere near as interesting.
>>
>>377302204
It was cool as hell teleporting home after an adventure, sorting out what to keep and what to sell, then teleporting to the nearest tribunal or imperial cult temple and catching a strider or boat to whatever market you wished. Or just fortifying speed, acrobatics, or levitation into the hundred and thousands and walking or jumping wherever you wanted to be. I guess they though Oblivion was just too big to make it work.
>>
>>377302603
How is it contrarian? I see most people praising Witcher games, and the company that produced it. I don't like the games either but a lot of people do.
>>
>>377298076

>>
>>377302726

>>377302790

The first one is not regarded very well by most people. Also, a lot of the time people who praise the first one shit on the other two. Makes them feel special to hate on the popular ones and love the unpopular one.

By the way, I don't hate W1. It took me three tries, but I beat it on the hardest difficulty. I pretty much played it for the atmosphere.

Everything plot, character, lore or geography related completely flew over my head in my first playthrough so it almost didn't count.

I replayed Roche path on my third playthrough and was surprised at how much of the nuances I missed the first time around.

Also isn't the obvious choice for that part just saving Philippa since it leads to being able to free Saskia from Philippa's thrall and Triss gets rescued by Letho anyways? And since the pogrom for witches and dissolution of the conclave/council in the north happens anyway in TW3's canon.

The thing about W1 combat is, it obviously wasn't good, but it didn't make the game worse for me. It just wasn't its strong part, but fighting
wasn't really unpleasurable to go through or something, just not very satisfying either. I don't get people who think the game was "ruined" by the combat system, it just made what could have been a 9/10 game an 8/10.

Combat is never good in RPGs so not really that big of a deal.

you got it the other way around, youre not playing someone else for it to be an RPG, you need to be able to conduct as you, or many different mindsets would do for it to be role play.

Fade is objectively great. Use the forms they make it fun as shit.

Deep roads is trash there's no saving it. Best thing to do it to break up Orzammar and the Deep Roads with another big quest.

As far as etc goes I guess I could give you a few Origins, Ostagar/The Wilds, Lothering, Redcliffe, Denerim, Brecilian Woods, The Temple of Sacred Ashes, The Mage Tower, The Companion Quests, the secret boss fights, Soldiers Peak, Return to Ostagar, Battle for Denerim, Awakening, and Lelianas Song that are all exceptional. A lot of the side quests are very fun too.

>>377305142
See above, not to mention as far as choices and personalized interactions go the game is pretty top tier.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlWaTu5eIsU&t=5s (Skip past Shale and the dog after you've watched one)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mx12hoRmfQY&t=5s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCb-B3NBkV0&t=50s
The Warden can pick 2 companions to come and rescue them from Fort Drakon keep. Every fucking combination works and roughly all of them have totally unique dialogue (Minus delivery the Dog and Shale which are roughly the same.) There are multiple plans to get into the fort (Deliveries, Circus, Chantry) and even if two different combos use the same plan (Sten and Oghren, Zevran and Oghren doing the circus, Wynne and Morrigan or Wynne and Leliana pretending to be the chantry) there lines will be completely different from one another. You also have multiple voiced dialogue choices and some blow your cover and others get you in.
This is on top of the Wardens option to break out themselves either by force or by seducing the guard (You just need higher persuasion if you're male).
You get 0-3 minutes of this dialogue per playthrough and there's about 40 minutes of it.
This is just one quest, the amount of small choices you probably didn't even notice like owning the Redcliffe bar, porking the elven lovers, killing connors demon is has a fucking massive amount of choices to rival Fort Drakon.

As far as etc goes I guess I could give you a few Origins, and the mage tower if especially if that was your Origin.*

Origins is the only game I unironically stopped playing after 30minutes.
And I managed to stomach the Gothic series, so that should tell you something.

You realise Bethesda have been using what is essentially the same engine for over a decade?
The only difference between the Skyrim/Fallout 4 and Oblivion/Fallout 3 engine is a volumetric lighting, pbr and some AI tweaks.

The witcher was so shit before they "enhanced" it. I haven't played the enhanced version, or any witcher game since I played the hunk of shit that was witcher one.

Most of the companion cast is also fucking fantastic, well written except for Secret Companion (Never really expands on what you already saw in the game) and Oghren (Dude ALE lmao) until he gets good in awakening, good companion quests, fun to have in the party for combat and also they all chime in on quest conversations or have the ability to contribute enough that you don't forget they are there, you can betray them and they can betray you during the story, you actually have to have them in your party and get to know them to find out more about them (Hence why every other /v/irgin says the cast is poorly written except for the 3 characters they had in their party).

Combat is also fun. Real time with pause (Despite its issues) felt a lot better than dragging turn based combat in my opinion (Dragon Age's larger fights would have grinded to a halt and stopped being fun with turn based combat) and all of the classes had fun abilities. Spell combinations were a lot of fun. The mage and rogue talent trees are sublime.

Something else I rarely see mentioned is that most of the games assets are actually made to look really nice from the top down Baldurs Gate style angle. So the game isn't quite as ugly as most people meme.

geralt is literally the most perfect character for an RPG that he kind of sucks out the fun

> perfect tracker, allows for batman vision
> combat expert, making fighting a meme
> daddy, gives him a quest and a reason to get pissy with everyone
> mutated, so he can be strong, smart, and makes it appropriate to want to fuck everyone, and not some high schooler's fantasy

Do you think The Witcher 1 will go on sale this summer? I want to play 1 and 2, at least before 3
>>
>>377298076
I actually just beat this last night!

The game's far from perfect... even far from polished. There's a lot of good ideas in there, but ultimately it's a mess. The pacing is abysmal. I almost gave up during the slog of chapter 3.

Ultimately, I'm glad I stuck with it because the ending was neat and I'm excited about going into Witcher 2 knowing the lore, but I don't think I'll ever replay the first one.

Superbunnyhop's review of it is pretty accurate.
