IV and IV:A were the only ones I played before playing Nocturne, and for me it was the opposite: while I loved those two (they were my first SMT games and I started them without knowing anything about the series, so you can imagine how blown away I was when I found how different this series is from any other jrpg), Nocturne felt like a step up in lots of ways, I loved the dungeon design, I loved the bosses, I loved how grinding free this game could be if you play it using your head rather than your stats... it´s great.

IV and IV:A don't really require grind. On the other hand IV can get tedious at times because of how easy you can get fucked over by a random encounter (fucking Smirk and no Vit) and I'd rather have save rooms than managing save and load

In SMT case, saving rooms is definetly a plus because of how the dungeons can be designed around them at times, looping entrances in a similar way to Dark Souls. Fuck, this game even has mimic chests.

I know for some reason /v/ likes to suck this game's dick. But it's fucking horrible. The gameplay isn't fun. Guessing weaknesses/buffing/debuffing isn't challenging, it's just tedious. Demon negotiation process is so shallow and gimmicky (the negotiation part, not the act of getting demons). Dungeons are garbage. Main character has zero personality, he's bland just like the story and world.

If this game was mainstream, I guarantee you /v/ would be shitting on it. Just because it's less popular than other jrpgs the contrarian hipsters on here have to overrate it. The game managed to make Dante boring. How the fuck can you do that? How do you make Dante boring? Nocturne is the greatest at one thing: being boring.

Here comes the fedoras now to defend a game that deep down they know, they didn't enjoy.

enemies miss a lot more i nocturne even after one buff/debuff in agility, and it fucking breaks the game. In IV and IV:A even at +3, enemies will still hit you most of the time. (well no if your smirking in IV but that was fixed in IV:A)

all SMT games feel pretty ancient, besides a few tweaks and QoL improvements here or there they still use the same mechanics as the 25+ year old games in the series, also they notably don't have huge budgets when compared to other series out there so they keep it simple mostly I guess.

that said nocturne is still arguably the best mainline entry in the series and 4 and 4:A were pretty fucking awful honestly, and outside of the SMT flavored edge, are starting to look like fucking persona games with the power of friendship garbage

Kinda agree on the negotiation part because it mainly RNG and kinda shit because of it but still entertaining atleast. I think Demi-fiend not having a personality was intentional so you can insert yourself into his shoes, you play as him after all.

Dante was pretty great in Nocturne honestly because he had his sick design from DMC2 with his personality from DMC1.

Is it a good idea to do TDE on my first playthrough? Also, if I backed out of the first kalpa after beating Matador am I just locked out of the TDE or can I go back to it later if I want to?

Yes. Neutral ending is honestly the best, since you won't become Lucifer's bottom bitch and choose it for yourself, but there are barely any differences between endings aside of final cutscene. True Demon Ending has the most content with Labyrinth of Amala and bonus boss fight.

You can take on Labyrinth of Amala as many times you want to, just make sure that you're going to finish it completely before entering the final dungeon.

Stop this stupid meme. Just because this was many people's first SMT game, it was by no means challenging. If you have any inkling of how SMT games work, you would have had no trouble with this game, especially on normal. Hard mode is a joke and does nothing but increase magatama prices by triple, while increasing enemy HP, attack, and crit rate.
