Because it's a spin-off that feels more like an Ys game due to its action-oriented nature (or a spiritual sequel to Zwei, from what I understand). It takes a while to unlock all the abilities and make the gameplay more fun while the story is quite cliched and not interesting enough to warrant such a big focus on it. It's not a bad game but it's pretty mediocre and doesn't justify having Kiseki in its title.

I get the point of his design, thats not really what bothers me though. Its the fact that we haven't had someone like Zin or Dogi since Trails in the sky arc.

What we get now is an Agate-style character with a different personality each game.

Also this is just my personal preferance but I really liked it when the party consisted of a mix of old-middle-young aged characters. When everyone is a teenager its kind of boring and bland usual jrpg fare.

Trails in the sky has one of my favorite casts of characters for that reason.

Actually Richard is the oldest, he's 35 in the 3rd. Kevin and Schera are on the younger side (22 and 23 respectively) but Agate is 25 and Olivier, Julia, Mueller, Zin and as mentioned Richard are all over 25 by the time of the 3rd.

Even if you disregard the 3rd, that still leaves Zin, Olivier, Schera, Agate and Kevin as adults in the first two games. It's pretty evenly divided.

Even though everyone's around the same age, you can see that not everyone is at the same level skill wise or have the same experiences. A character doesn't necessarily have to be older to influence someone positively. I still don't get the whole argument about Sword X Staff.

At no point in the games does it state that he's in any way weaker for swapping to the staff. Anelace make makes it a point to talk about how swords and can be used to protect too, and even questions if Cassius thinks the staff is stronger than the sword, which he says is not the reason for swapping.

Just because he fights to protect instead of harming doesn't mean he can't do some serious damage with his staff. He freaking pummels the Reverie effortlessly in FC if you have the lowest possible bracer points.
