Behold, the PS4 exclusive which /v/ doesn't care about because it's an actual video game.

Yes, it is an exclusive. There's modes and settings here which aren't on the Saturn port, and have fun playing that on a modern screen anyway.

>>377270938
No, sorry.

Chaining systems are generally bad in shooters. Ikaruga only fucks your score if you don't perfectly chain the game. RS becomes an unplayable mess if you don't chain the game perfectly - if you don't level your weapons through the chains, you can't defeat the bosses before it times out. That's pretty fucking awful.
>>
Darius Twin SNES.
>>
>>377273102
No, sorry. SNES is a terrible platform for shooters. They all run very slowly.

Gaiden and G Darius are better anyway.
>>
>>377273098
Did they at least give you an option to make the enemy bullets more visible?
>>
>>377273297
Whatever you say, Darius Twin is fucking sweet.
>>
Does Sub-Terrania count as a shmup?
>>
>>377273440
There is indeed something in the several pages of options to change how the bullets look, but I never toggled it to see exactly how it worked. There is something there though, yes, but don't quote me as saying it makes it more visible.

>>
>>377278185
It's a shitty, gimmicky mechanic, and they decided to design the whole game around it.
Even if you remove that mechanic, it would be a very generic and sub-par shmup.
I don't get why it ever gets praise at all, to be honest.

Polarity mechanic trivializes what could be interesting patterns, it's a shmup that punishes you for shooting things, and the scoring system is fucking garbage. It's style over substance garbage that retards eat up because they've never played a good shmup in their lives.

Yes if you remove the unique mechanic that the game's built around, it will be generic no shit. You're still not explaining what's so wrong with it besides you not finding it comfortable. It's fairly unique, has plenty of depth to it because of how it ties into scoring, it makes routing more fun and forces you to do some very satisfying precise movement and shooting.

>>
Why isn't this talked about more?

It's a boss rush game, with bosses that adapt to your strategies. There's also a 3D version called "Infinity Danger".
>>
I like RefRain a lot, though it's maybe a bit on the easy side. The music sounds a bit repetitive out of the game but it fits well in-game, and the story being told by info files unlocked at the start screen is a nice way to handle a story in a shmup without it becoming a total nuisance like say, Sine Mora.
>>
How is Raiden IV: Overkill? It's 3€ on indiegala
>>
>>377282510
I played Warning Forever a bunch when I was younger. Pretty cool little game.
>>
>>377282615
More of the same, so if you played 3 you'll probably like 4. Totally worth 3 eurobux.
That said, I think the PC version had some issues, though I can't recall anything more specific than that.
>>
>>377282615
Comes down to if you like the style. It's a pretty defensive game with mostly aimed bullets and a focus on survival because the scoring's barebones. Pretty memorization heavy because the bullets are fast as fuck. It's fairly tough on normal and above, but it has a bunch of lower difficulties that make it manageable. Catchy music.
>>
>>377270938
>>377273098
Radiant Silvergun becomes a much tighter game in Ikaruga mode, which changes chaining to how only needing 3 of the same color at a time to increase. Rather than only shooting one color throughout the entire game.

so, as a person who has never really played any shmups, but really enjoyed the flying sections of automata, what would be a good shmup to start with?
>>
>>377283348
Astebreed is a competent shmup with lots of focus on what's going on in the background, so it's a lot like Automata's shmup segments in presentation while having a lot more going for it gameplay-wise, which makes it a good entry-level one. If it's too anime for you you could look at Ether Vapor Remaster instead, which is an earlier game by the same devs.
>>

I was actually about to ask the thread a question along these lines. Why does every Raiden game feel worse than the last? Seems like no effort has been put into this series since 2.
>>
>>377285874
Speaking of organic stages, does anyone have any Akiragoya games aside from Blood Red Skies? They're pretty hard to find.
>>
>>377285986
>>

There's a lot you can do to make it fresh but most of it is in the details rather than the basics so plebs won't notice or care

>>377286336
I've been morbidly fascinated in organic-themed games for a while. One of my favorite weird ones is Paranoiascape for the PS1, a weird game that's like pinball but the paddles keep moving forward through corridors.

Astebreed has melee attacks and later stages put a lot of focus on using the melee-dash to avoid enemy fire.

Speaking of, anyone remember a top-down 3D shmup where you play as a mecha? The screen automatically scrolls up and you move with it, but you could scroll it horizontally by moving. You had ranged and melee attacks in it, and it was a bit on the slow side.
Also, if you beat the stage's score threshold you unlocked an H-scene.
>>
>>377286847
Dragon Blaze is the most up close and personal Psikyo game. Strania, Cybattler, Vasara and Astebreed all have swords.

I like Strikers 1945+ and 19XX The War Against Destiny.

Air Gallet
This game has some really neat setpieces.
>chasing a space shuttle
>fighting a stealth bomber over the tokyo tower
>fighting a giant mech in a river, with proper reflections in water
>meeting the same mech in another stage, but this time the aircraft carrier you start on crashes into it and pushes it into a city wall, sacrificing itself to destroy the boss
>that whole fucking final boss
And the backgrounds and intros are great too

Shot/bomb - only two buttons you need, shot fires normally if you tap it and goes into focus mode if you hold it down. Bomb bombs.
Full auto is like a turbo button, and the settings configure how fast it presses for you.
>>
>>377294301
>Shot/bomb - only two buttons you need
Absolutely not. I can't play shmups that have the focus on shot hold and don't have a rapid shot button, because constantly mashing the shot button for the basic attack aggravates my RSI.
>>
>>377294301
Thanks. I was mostly curious about the differences between Full auto, Rapid shot and Rapid full auto but I managed to google it:
>"Rapid Shot" and "Rapid Full-Auto" are like turbo versions of the regular Shot and Full-Auto. So holding Rapid Shot or Rapid Full-Auto is the same as repeatedly tapping Shot or Full-Auto. Tapping the buttons instead of holding them is used for some advanced methods of ramping up the shot counter. There's also the "power shot" which does slightly more damage and increases your counter a little bit more than holding Shot or Full-Auto by themselves. The power shot is manually performed by holding Full-Auto + tapping Shot quickly.

I'd like shmups more if they weren't RNG, rote memorisation, trial and error garbage.

It's the consequence of being arcade games though. They can't have legitimately good game design because they need to eat money. It's no wonder doujin games are the only really good ones (Crimzon Clover, Touhou, Astebreed, Blue Revolver etc).

Great visuals and music most of the time though.

>>377301382
I'd say the biggest problem with older shmups was the powerup system. If you die at any point in Raiden, your run is pretty much fucked and you might as well restart, regardless of how many lives you have. That's because there is just not much of anything you can do with a Lv.1 or Lv.2 peashooter in a stage that was a challenge for your maxed out firepower - you're basically just dying and hoping for a fairy to pop out. That's the arcade influence right there, where making a mistake completely fucks you and you either need to quarter feed or start over to get anywhere.

A lot of newer games (meaning pretty much all of them) don't fall into that trap, and can still be played until out of lives. Sure, it's difficult, but it relies on you playing well to progress. Then again, I don't think I've seen a new arcade shooter in the last 20 years or so.
>>
>>377301896
This is why I've never been fond of Gradius.
>>
>>377301382
Didnt I tell you not to post this filth back on shmupg
>>
>>377301892
there is no skill in shmups, just autistic memorisation. anyone can do it with time and a broken obsessive brain.
>>377301569
see: mushi futari, which has both RNG and memo garbage. some of the bosses will randomly use broken patterns that wall the player (like the t-rex) forcing them to restart the run and hope they get the normal pattern. once the player has flipped the coin correctly, the rest of the game consists of just playing through the same figured out route to the finish.
>>
>>377301891
It's just strange to me that it's one of those "forever set in stone" design choices.
And yeah I'm pretty casual, but I do enjoy the meme shumps.
>>
>>377302168
Its not just memorization its mostly execution, not that memo isnt a skill to begin with
>>
>>377302246
There are a bunch of shmups (especially recent ones) where you either have a life meter, or a series of life bars rather than a number of lifes. As such, you can take a hit or two before your ship blows up. Outside ones with a recovering life gauge, though, it's not much different from having a larger stock of lifes, since you still have a set number of hits before continuing.
>>
>>377302168
Or you can just get good instead of whining like a little bitch.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xmw2eeLooyI
>>
>>377302246
Its not really set in stone, there are shmups with health bars like Guwange, ones with shields like Kamui, autobombs and other shit. Not like the games would get easier if they were designed around big health bars since then the devs would simply make the enemy attacks and level design tougher to compensate.

EDF is good for sure, but Space Megaforce's variety just blows it out of the water. I also just tend to prefer verticals, so I admit some bias.

Axelay is also top notch
>>
>>377302823
Satazius is great, Zangeki Warp is good and their other games are quite fun too although not on the level of those two imo. Gigantic Army and Steel Strider are awesome though, hope they make more run and gun games.
>>
>>377302787
it'll stop being artificial difficulty when it can be cleared without bombs

it won't though, and mushi futari runs make getting max or close to max bombs mandatory because the final boss requires them to get past multiple undodgeable patterns

it's a memory check and a resource check but not a skill or execution one
>>
>>377303114
Keeping the resources is a skill check, its really fucking demanding

Super R-Type/R-Type Delta, KAMUI, Supercharged Robot VULKAISER, Who's That Flying for something a bit more goofy. Beat Hazard is a lot of fun to play to your music, although Geometry Wars is probably the better twin stick shooter.
