TRIGGER WARNING MMO DISCLAIMER

>want to play Elder Scrolls online on PS4 because computer is getting old and don't want to get another gaming one
>The logical route is to buy the new Morrowind Standard edition which comes with the expansion and the base game
>But wait! It doesn't come with the 5 paid DLC's two of which have skill trees locked behind them
>all of these DLC's is about $80
>If I want all the content it's $60 for the Morrowind Standard and $80 for the DLC. $140 for everything
>this is what most people would think to do before knowing how pricey the DLC is
>BUT WAIT
>You practically need to have ESO + because the crafting bag that comes with it is considered to be required for quality of life
>That's an extra $15 a month
>Also have to pay for PS+

>Alternate option that isn't logical is to buy the Gold Edition which is $60 but is the base game + all DLC. Then I buy the Morrowind upgrade for $40. $100 for the game, then $15 forever to get the bag.

>games not being stupidly expensive in 2017
>>
>>377271217
No visible gun in first person mode. Terrible controls. The first level was clearly much more polished than later levels. The swoop bike chase level was unplayable.
>>
>>377271180
That's for employees that receive tips only like waiters and waitresses, not McD's burgerflippers. Regular US minimum wage is $7.25 federally but in some states it's mandated to be higher. i.e. Massachusetts is $11/hr for your typical burgerflipper.
>>
>>377270106
Actually the opposite is the case. The buying power of the US dollar has been on the decline for awhile.

>>377269310
I do miss Greatest Hits. Got a lot of PS1 games that way.

But yea I'm grown now I'm not looking to talk about the latest game with friends at school anymore so fuck it I'll play it 3 months later or a year later for the non-bullshit DLC edition and snag it for 20 or less.

And season passes can eat a dick, I have a backlog of games a mile long so fuckem.
>>
>>377271720

You're just misinterpreting what he said. Inflation has made the dollar weaker, yes, yet the price of the average video game is the same at $60. Aside from buying video games, $60 in 1991 went a lot farther than it does now in 2017.
>>
>>377271958
>Actually the opposite is the case. The buying power of the US dollar has been on the decline for awhile.
>I have no idea how inflation works

>>377271720
ESO+ also comes with cash shop money. You can buy a DLC expansion every two months. Not exactly the best solution but its the cheapest if you are considering ESO+ mandatory, which it pretty much is like you said.

Sorry maybe I did. Kinda a weird way to put it wasn't sure if he was implying it that 59 in 1991 was a bigger deal or less of a deal.

Because yes inflation (and a bunch of wars) wrecked that shit hard. Still chaps my ass how much crap young people get these days and I just remember back to when sure the minimum wage was half as much but the cost of a house and car were 1/3 to 1/4 as much too.

>>
Piracy is more available than ever

Most people play infinity games like LoL CSGO CoD whatever and have no real reason to even buy games anyway

Who cares

If you're a "variety gamer" you're either rich or play older games that went on sale.
>>
>>377273173
>has a shitty PC
I don't think you realize how shitty some PCs can be out there. Could be like a 5 year old AMD APU shitbox HP system from walmart. More RAM and a cheapass board-powered GPU wouldn't fix anything in that case.

Back on topic, this is the best era for purchasing games ever. Piracy may not be as easy now as a few years ago, but games are typically cheap as fuck a year or two after release and honestly, how many games come out every year that are "day one buys" for the average person on /v/? Maybe one or two a year after you've pretty much settled on the kind of games you don't mind spending on? My backlog is already endless so it becomes more and more difficult to justify spending $60 on one new game.

This must be bait nigger in 1991 3d didn't even exist AT ALL its not like we had a choice between 2d and 3d when buying snes era games. Maybe there was a few on PC, but back in the day PC gaming was nowhere near as popular as it is now. In fact that shit didn't kick off until the late 90's when fps games like quake come online with dial up modems. Guess what most people rented those computers because at the time computers that could play quake where anywhere from $2,000 - $5,000 USD and the American dollar was still pretty strong back then. Imagine dropping ten Grand for quake at 45 fps today. Now we spend $600 dollars and play battlefield at 144 fps just for perspective.

Games were more expensive then because storage. Shit, games on average were 60-70 bucks back then for NES/SNES/Genesis. Dunno about the rest, and lets not even mention the Neo Geo which cartridges were sometimes more fucking expensive than consoles.

they're way cheaper now if you adjust, but they still have no business being 60 bucks especially with the DLC and "Season Pass" bullshit selling whats basically unfinished games, glorified betas in some cases (Looking at you SF5).

Which game made the DLC bullshit acceptable anyways? I know League is responsible for the Skins bullshit getting popular, but what the fuck did DLC first?

I dont see how you choosing digital over physical is somehow the problem of others, in fact you prove my point of gamers being entitled whiners. You have the options and a couple of pages of manual that you dont get anymore doesnt erase all the lost money of ignoring devaluation which no other entertainment industry does to this extend and cant hold forever dlc and microtransaction are to balance it a littel bit but sooner rather than later games will need to be a bit more expensive or you just wont get certain games anymore cause they are to expensive to produce and you needet to sell 7mio instead of the 1 mi you needed in the past to be a moderate success. If the switch to digital gets even more big it still can work out longer cause the win percentage is obviously higher thats also the reason digital cost the mostly the same.

This. I remember one of the biggest issues growing up back then was how expensive video games were, and how slow they were to come down in price/lack of sales. I normally got like maybe 2 games a year (Christmas and Birthday), and rented the rest. I remember wanting Sonic & Knuckles so bad, but it was so expensive that I never got it until years later when it was used. Hell, I still remember getting Pokemon Snap at like $60 during the N64 days.

In comparison, games go on sale almost immediately, there are better options available for launch discounts (GCU with Best Buy or Amazon Prime for launch titles), and digital sales are decent enough.

Games should be cheaper. A big part of the cost back in the day was the hardware itself. Memory and storage were expensive. Cartridges were expensive to manufacture. Technical limitations were a real problem.

But most of those issues have been solved. Games are printed on cheap disc media, or just downloaded straight to the user's hard drive via digital release.

And the games themselves are no longer made to hold value or even be playable after a small window of time. Servers go down, no more game. Digital games provider goes under, lose access to your entire library. A growing number of games can't be resold or traded either. At least the old cart games weren't locked to one user or device.

So $60 isn't really fair to pay for a cheaper to produce, more limited to use game format. And this is without adding the DLC, much of which use to just be unlockable content after beating the game in the old days.
>>
>>377284508
Yeah video games are the cheapest entertainment when you look at money vs spend time on it.
A single skyrim or really any open world game gets you 80-200 hours depending on what you are looking for in the game.. Now calculate that time invest on several new! relased movies or books and look how many hours 60$ last you then.. I really dont get games are not really expensive for what they offer not to mention the countless cheap games, free games or hell steam sales.

Let's be honest, that money isn't going into the game but rather the advertising.

At the same time though you have games that become extremely rare as well as go up in price far beyond what it was originally.
>>
>>377287696

Graphics are expensive. When you work for a game company they may task you with just making one tree and someone else might be making another. You spend all your time making it so branches all sway nicely together in different directions and make sure the texture is consistent throughout. It takes forever, and that artist is getting paid full time to make that one fucking tree.

HD 3D graphics are way too expensive in labor.

They are far and between, most of the games will drop at least half the price in a year. I know that some games have high price and later that price is going up - Twin Snakes, Fire Emblem on GC or Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii, all these games have their price going up. Still I managed to buy some oldies for reasonable price and PS3 games are the cheapest now. In couple of years they will too get price rise.
